"Yeah." Chloe Reed nodded, then pulled back the covers and got into bed.
Walker Grant had already reached the bedside. He sat down, tilted his head slightly, and asked, "Chloe, I feel like you’re in a strange mood today. Did something happen to upset you?"
Holding her phone to watch a video, Chloe simply typed a quick reply and showed him the screen: "No."
Walker furrowed his brows slightly before pulling back the covers and lying down. He moved closer, lying on his side next to her, and reached out to wrap an arm around her waist.
Chloe’s body stiffened, and she pushed his hand away.
"Chloe?" A hint of confusion colored Walker’s tone. "I’m not going to do anything else. Can’t I just hold you?"
Chloe looked at him. The loneliness on his face was obvious, but she still shifted a little further away. She typed on her phone, "We don’t need to take things this far."
Walker fell silent for a long moment. He slowly withdrew his hand, his voice laced with desolation. "I just wanted to hold you. After all, once my eyes heal, I won’t have the chance anymore."
The bedroom fell into a deep silence.
Chloe didn’t respond. She watched her videos for a little while longer before turning off the lights and lying down. As her breathing grew heavy and her consciousness began to fade into sleep, she felt someone press up against her back.
He had wrapped his arms around her again. Chloe was far too exhausted to argue with him and just let it be.
The next day.
Chloe began her training. Fiona Linton seemed incredibly excited, watching eagerly from the sidelines while Chloe practiced. When she saw Chloe’s shooting accuracy, Fiona clapped enthusiastically.
"That was amazing, babe!"
Not having practiced for a while, Chloe felt a bit rusty at first, but after a few rounds, she found her rhythm again. Holding the gun with both hands, her expression was intensely focused. Not a single shot missed the target.
Daniel Hayes, standing nearby, remarked, "You still have a natural talent for shooting."
Chloe practiced at the range for a little while longer before sitting down to rest, planning to work on her combat skills next. She looked over at Fiona and typed, "Do you want to learn?"
"No way." Fiona shook her head. "I have to do acupuncture for you guys every day. If I practice shooting, my hands will get shaky."
Chloe nodded and typed, "Then you can learn whenever you feel like it."
"Mhm!"
That afternoon.
Chloe emerged from the basement only to find that Claire Monroe had arrived. Claire was sitting in the living room, looking at Walker with a very complicated expression.
Walker’s tone was completely indifferent. "Did you come here just to stare at me?"
"I saw someone yesterday," Claire said. "He looked exactly like your older brother..." As she spoke, a dazed look came over her face. "How could someone look so similar? But he’s already dead..."
"Did you not chase after him to make sure?" Walker asked. "What if he isn’t dead?"
Claire pursed her lips. "I tried, but I couldn’t catch up. He moved too fast." She paused for a moment before adding, "Julian Grant wasn’t someone who knew martial arts, nor was he that cold. He was a very gentle person."
She looked at Walker. "You’re full of fake gentleness—the kind that wears a mask. He, on the other hand, was gentle from the inside out. He made people feel comfortable."
"Did you like him?" Walker retorted. "Too bad you’re too late. He’s been dead for four years."
Claire’s face instantly darkened. She let out a cold scoff. "How could I possibly like him? His taste was so bad—absolutely terrible!"
