You climb off Musashi's jet ski, making no effort to conceal the obvious bulge in your swim shorts. Your arousal from the sustained grinding is unmistakable.
"Thank you all for the entertaining ride," you say, meeting Musashi's eyes first. She's still astride the jet ski, droplets running down her bare back and the strings of her micro bikini. "That was... educational."
Musashi grins wickedly. "Any time you need more education, I'm available."
Erza steps onto the platform, her sports swimsuit clinging to her muscular frame. She glances at your obvious arousal, then away quickly, a faint blush touching her cheeks. "It was good exercise."
Shibonou climbs off last, the transparent white fabric of her swimsuit leaving absolutely nothing to imagination. She notices your gaze lingering and tilts her head slightly. "I trust the view met expectations?"
"Exceeded them," you admit.
The next rotation group waits near the platform edge. C.C. wears a simple black one-piece, elegant and understated. Riveria has chosen a forest-green bikini that complements her blonde hair. Sinon stands in a blue two-piece with white trim, short hair still dry.
"Your turn," you tell them, gesturing toward the now-vacant jet skis. "Though I should warn you - they move like they're trying to shake you off."
"Noted," C.C. says dryly, moving past you toward the nearest ski.
Riveria pauses beside you briefly. "Soon."
"Soon." You acknowledge before asking, "Know where Nova is?"
"Command center, last I knew. She was reviewing sensor data with Albedo." Riveria's green eyes flick down to your shorts, then back up without comment. "She mentioned wanting to talk with you about something."
"Thanks." You step back as she joins C.C. on the platform.
Sinon settles onto the third ski without acknowledging you directly. Her body language is still distant - the conversation in the armory clearly left her needing space.
Sinon revs her engine. "Try to keep up, Old ladies!"
The three jet skis shoot through the Gate opening into open water, leaving twin rooster-tails of spray behind them. Erza, Musashi and Shinobu are already heading toward the upper deck access, talking quietly about something you don't catch.
You turn toward the interior corridors, still very obviously aroused, heading for the command center. Your swim shorts do nothing to hide your state, but at this point everyone aboard has seen more. The corridors are mostly empty - mid-day on a Tuesday, most people are either topside enjoying the sun or occupied with various tasks.
The command center door is open when you arrive. Through it you can see Albedo at the main console, Elegant white dress pristine as always. Nova stands beside her in her midnight gray armor, the two of them studying something on the displays.
You step through the doorway into the command center. The main displays show tactical overlays of the West Coast, satellite feeds cycling through various survivor communities, and comm traffic logs scrolling past in real time.
Nova turns from the console, her midnight gray armor reflecting the screen glow. Albedo remains seated, white gothic lolita dress pristine despite the long morning.
"What's up?" you ask.
Nova gestures toward one of the displays. "Three clusters of dimensional traveler sightings in the last eighteen hours. All three showing patterns suggesting organized capture rather than random encounters."
She taps the screen. Red markers appear near Phoenix, Las Vegas, and somewhere inland from Los Angeles. "Phoenix cluster - at least eight separate sightings over six hours, all within a two-mile radius. Survivor broadcasts mention 'people with weird powers' being held in what used to be a shopping complex."
"Las Vegas area," Albedo continues, her voice measured. "Six to nine travelers, possibly more. Reports are confused - some broadcasts claim they're being recruited voluntarily, others suggest coercion. The group holding them is actively seeking buyers on an emerging slave market."
Nova pulls up the third marker. "Southern California inland, maybe four to seven travelers. This one's different. Multiple broadcasts describing 'magic users' performing public demonstrations, but the descriptions don't match actual abilities. We think it's bait."
"Bait for what?"
"For you," Albedo says flatly. "They know you protect dimensional travelers. They're advertising fake ones to draw you in, then planning an ambush to capture 'the enchanter.'"
You study the markers. "Can we confirm any of this?"
"That's why I wanted to talk," Nova says. "Your scrying abilities could verify which reports are accurate before we commit resources to rescue operations."
You nod slowly. "Show me the Phoenix location first."
Nova enlarges the map sector. You change the telepathy web, adding visual sharing for Nova and Albedo, then begin casting.
The scrying spell forms smoothly. Your vision splits - the command center remains visible through your physical eyes while magical sight opens elsewhere. Desert suburbs appear, heat shimmer rising from cracked pavement. You shift perspective, searching for the shopping complex mentioned in broadcasts.
There. A sprawling retail center, parking lots mostly empty. Movement near the western entrance - armed guards, four of them, positioned like they're protecting something valuable inside.
You push the vision inward through walls. Empty storefronts. Makeshift barricades. Then a larger space - looks like it used to be a department store. Cages. Crude but functional, constructed from metal shelving and chain-link fencing.
People inside them.
You count quickly. Eleven females, all showing signs of malnutrition and exhaustion. two display obvious non-human features - pointed ears on one woman, what might be scales on a girl's forearms.
"Phoenix is real," you say quietly, maintaining the scrying while speaking. "Eleven captives, caged conditions, armed guards. Likely two dimensional travelers based on the non-human details."
"Las Vegas next," Albedo prompts.
You shift focus to Las Vegas. The scrying vision sweeps across desert suburbs, abandoned casinos glittering with broken glass. You find the reported cluster quickly - six people in a fortified hotel lobby, armed guards watching the entrances.
But no dimensional travelers. The six display survivor magic - crude telekinesis, minor elemental manipulation, nothing like the abilities travelers possess. One woman demonstrates creating small flames in her palm while a man with a clipboard takes notes.
"Recruitment operation," you murmur. "They're looking for travelers, not holding them."
You release that vision and cast toward southern California. Desert hills. Small compounds scattered across the landscape. The third location appears - staged demonstrations in an open courtyard, people performing magic tricks for assembled crowds.
No travelers here either. Just survivors with awakened abilities putting on shows. You watch long enough to confirm the setup - guards positioned at chokepoints, sniper nests on rooftops, obvious ambush preparation.
"Bait," Albedo says quietly, reading your expression through the telepathy link. "They advertised dimensional travelers to draw you in."
"Yeah." You release the spell and refocus on the Phoenix location. The caged women are still there. Two with obvious non-human features - pointed ears, scaled forearms. Nine others showing only exhaustion and fear.
"Phoenix is real," you repeat to Nova and Albedo. "Two confirmed dimensional travelers. Maybe more - can't tell physical differences on all of them from scrying alone."
Nova leans against the console. "Options?"
"I can teleport a Spectral Hand directly to them," you explain. "Teleport them out one at a time - guards won't even know what happened until the cages are empty."
"Clean extraction," Nova agrees. "Low risk to captives."
"Or," you continue slowly, "we could purchase them. Pay an exorbitant price publicly. Make it known that dimensional travelers are valuable, that protecting them brings rewards."
Albedo's expression sharpens. "That would incentivize others to locate travelers safely rather than harm them. But it would also incentivize kidnapping."
"Exactly the problem." You study the Phoenix marker on the display. "Paying a ransom legitimizes the slave market. More people will see dimensional travelers as commodities. Capture attempts will increase."
"But silent extraction teaches nothing," Nova counters. "The kidnappers just lose their investment with no explanation. They try again with better security."
"Either way has consequences," Albedo says. "The question is which consequences we prefer to manage."
"Let's do both," you announce. "I'll teleport all the prisoners out secretly first, then we confront their leader directly with overwhelming force. We pay him for the dimensional travelers only - reduced price because of their condition. He'll likely redouble his search efforts, which publicizes their value by proxy without damaging our reputation."
Nova nods slowly. "Clean extraction, then leverage demonstration. He learns consequences exist, but gets paid enough to spread word that protecting travelers is profitable."
"Exactly. The non-travelers get healed aboard ship, then teleported wherever they want to go. Keeping them would set bad precedent."
Albedo leans back. "The ship's regeneration enchantments will handle most injuries within minutes. Asia's healing available for severe cases."
"Right." You activate the telepathy web, broadcasting to everyone aboard. "Everyone, we've discovered eleven women being held prisoner. At least two are dimensional travelers. I'm teleporting them to the flight deck now. They'll arrive without warning - shocked, probably terrified. Give them space. Wait for them to speak first."
You head slowly for the flight deck, Nova and Albedo following. The afternoon sun beats down on the metal deck. A few others arriving at the same time and clear space.
"Starting extraction," you announce. You cast Spectral Hand, the translucent construct appearing beside you before vanishing. Through scrying you see it appear instantly in the department store cage area.
Next, the return trip. Teleport.
A woman materializes on the deck five feet away. She's thin, dehydrated, wearing torn clothing. Pointed ears mark her as an elf. She staggers, falls to her knees, looks around wildly.
"Easy," Albedo says quietly from ten feet back. "You're safe now."
The woman's eyes are huge with shock. She doesn't speak.
You cast again. Another woman appears, this one with scales visible on her forearms. She screams, scrambling backward across the deck until her back hits a bulkhead, revealing a long reptilian tail.
Third cast. Fourth. Fifth. Women materialize in quick succession, each one disoriented and panicking. Some cry out. Others freeze in place. One vomits immediately.
By the eighth arrival, Asia emerges from a hatchway, medical supplies in hand. She approaches the vomiting woman slowly, speaking softly.
Ninth. Tenth. Eleventh.
All eleven prisoners now stand - or crouch, or lie - on the flight deck. The pointed-eared woman is speaking rapidly in a language you don't recognize. The scaled woman has curled into a ball, her long reptilian tail becoming apparent. Three others cling to each other.
Asia kneels beside the nearest captive, offering water. The woman flinches violently.
"It's okay," Asia whispers. "You're not in the cage anymore. See? Open sky. Ocean. You're safe."
The woman's eyes dart between Asia, you, the ocean, the sky. Her breathing is ragged.
"I'm going to heal you," Asia continues. "Just physical injuries. Nothing that will hurt."
Golden light blooms around Asia's hands.
You pull two plain silver rings from inventory, holding them in your palm. The connection enchantment forms quickly - Anchoring Bands. The rings glow briefly before settling.
Around you, the flight deck has become a careful dance of approach and withdrawal. Asia kneels beside the woman who vomited, golden light flickering around her hands. Three other captives huddle together. The woman with scales - Liza - has pressed herself into the corner where deck meets wall, tail wrapped tight around her legs.
Tuka sits frozen five feet from where she teleported. Her pointed ears twitch at every sound. She's speaking continuously in a flowing, musical language - rapid words that might be prayers or pleas.
You activate the telepathy web, quietly announcing both their names. "Tuka Luna. Liza. Both from different stories."
Then you move toward Tuka slowly, steps deliberate and visible. She stops speaking. Her eyes track your approach - wide, terrified, calculating distance to... nowhere. There's ocean in every direction.
You crouch three feet away and set one ring on the deck. It clinks softly against metal. You tap your own anchoring band, then your temple. Twice. The gesture is simple, universal.
Tuka stares at the ring. Her breathing is shallow, rapid. She says something in that musical language - a question, maybe, or a denial.
You don't move. Don't speak. Just keep your hand near your temple, waiting.
Thirty seconds pass. Tuka's gaze flicks between the ring, your face, the ocean, back to the ring. Finally she reaches out - hand shaking badly - and picks it up. Examines it. Looks at your band again.
She slides it onto her finger.
The telepathy connection establishes instantly. You gently speak to her, "Can you understand me now?"
"Yes." Her mental voice carries the same musical quality as her speech, but the terror is unmistakable. "Where am I? What happened? The cage was - I was - where is this?"
"You're safe. We teleported you from the cage holding you prisoner. This is a ship. You're safe now."
She stares at you, processing. Her breathing slows slightly. "Safe?"
"Safe. I promise."
Tuka doesn't relax, but something in her posture shifts.
You gesture for her to stand beside you. She hesitates, then unfolds slowly from her crouch. Her movements are stiff, painful.
Together you turn toward Liza. She's watching with slitted pupils, tail coiled defensively. When you start forward, she flinches so violently her head cracks against the wall.
You stop immediately. Crouch again, even farther back than you did with Tuka. Place the second ring on the deck and push it forward gently before retreating two steps.
Liza stares at it like it might explode.
