Parallel World Game Developer

Chapter 48 - #48: First Hollow Knight ’Boss’ Encounter?

Chapter 48: Chapter #48: First Hollow Knight ’Boss’ Encounter?

"I’m losing my fuckin’ mind here," Silver muttered to his stream chat as his little character wandered the desolate corridors.

"If any other developer dropped me into a subterranean labyrinth like this without an auto-mapping feature, I would have uninstalled the game right on the spot."

He had spent the last forty minutes blindly fumbling through the dark, guided only by a faint, distant whistling melody echoing through the caverns.

Following the sound, he finally stumbled upon a quirky, bespectacled insect huddling in a hidden alcove of the crossroads.

Silver had initially assumed the game completely lacked a mapping feature entirely.

However, after speaking with a tall, heavy-sighing insect named Iselda back in the ruined town of Dirtmouth, he discovered that her adventurer husband was currently down in the trenches charting the depths below.

To actually get a functional layout of the zone, Silver had to physically track down this elusive cartographer, Cornifer, to buy his handwritten maps.

Defeating the infected creatures roaming the ruins rewarded him with Geo, the glittering shell fragments that served as the universal currency of Hallownest.

Silver quickly realized that hard-earned Geo was required to purchase vital early-game equipment like the Wayward Compass and the Quill from Iselda’s shop.

The compass was absolutely essential for tracking his real-time spatial coordinates on the map screen, while the quill allowed the little knight to update uncharted corridors whenever he rested.

Since his journey had just begun, every single room had to be manually traversed and charted through raw trial and error.

"This map and compass system is absolutely diabolical," Silver groaned, shaking his head at his webcam as he reviewed his empty menu screen.

He had blindly assumed that purchasing the layout from the merchant would instantly solve his directional struggles, only to find that his player icon still didn’t show up on the parchment.

It wasn’t until he tracked back to a resting bench, opened his inventory, and physically slotted the Wayward Compass charm that his glowing pin finally materialized.

"Is the sadist genuinely not worried about driving players away with this kind of convoluted nonsense?" Silver sighed heavily.

"I can absolutely guarantee you that a massive wave of casual gamers are going to rage-quit and request automated refunds solely due to how tedious the baseline navigation feels."

The moment the complaint left his lips, a fresh wave of user text began scrolling through the stream chat:

[RetroGamer_Dan: Thanks for the warning bro, I already closed my client. I spent forty minutes running in literal circles completely blind. It’s way more relaxing just watching you suffer instead.]

[PixelPirate_99: The sadist loves weaponizing basic quality-of-life features against us. It’s his signature move at this point.]

[ConsoleCowboy: Is hiding the player icon on a map without a specific item really necessary? Honestly, this feels like terrible game design.]

[LoreMaster_Matt: There has to be a deeper reason for this mechanic, guys. Nova doesn’t just do things randomly.]

[BackseatDriver_X: Stop trying to preach to the developer, chat. The man clearly operates on a completely different psychological wavelength.]

The chat logs flashed past at blinding speeds on his secondary monitor. The vast majority of the viewers leaving bitter comments had eagerly downloaded the game the absolute second it went live, only to shut it down in a fit of pure frustration after getting thoroughly lost.

Watching their favorite streamer stumble through the exact same navigational maze provided a profound sense of validation.

They had initially blamed their own spatial limitations, but seeing Silver struggle proved that the developer’s malicious design was the real culprit.

"Alright, let’s keep moving. Now that we finally have a mapped layout and a functioning compass tracking us, the exploration should go a lot smoother," Silver said, taking a slow, steadying breath.

Navigating an uncharted, blind playthrough was always the most grueling phase of any exploration platformer.

Yet, he had never imagined that a simple indie game could make the baseline act of traversing a map feel this intensely oppressive.

"The structural constraints in this game are honestly ridiculous. You only have a maximum of five mask shards for your health bar, and a single tick of damage from a basic trash mob instantly wipes out a full block," Silver complained, continuously critiquing the design choices as he steered his character deeper into the ruins.

"On top of that, there are random ceiling collapses dropping heavy, jagged rocks right onto your hitbox. It feels incredibly mean-spirited."

Even though the basic crawling insects on the ground weren’t lethal enough to completely end his run, a momentary lapse in concentration would cause him to stumble right into their rigid patrol loops.

The constant friction was deeply unsettling. With only five hit points to his name, every single mask shard felt like an invaluable, irreplaceable resource.

Dying in Hallownest meant forfeiting his entire wallet of hard-earned Geo, leaving a hostile, shadowy Shade hovering at the exact coordinates of his demise.

Furthermore, the death animation violently shattered his primary Soul vessel, leaving the UI resource meter visibly fractured.

Until he successfully tracked back to his grave site and violently destroyed his own floating ghost, his maximum energy storage remained severely capped.

The soul gathered from striking enemies was used to cast focusing spells to heal his broken masks, but a fractured vessel could barely hold slightly over half of its original capacity.

"Is this entire zone just populated by pathetic trash mobs?" Silver muttered to himself, pushing blindly into an uncharted, dark cavern on the eastern edge of the crossroads.

The absolute second the words left his lips, a colossal insect wielding a massive weapon stomped heavily into the frame, towering four or five times higher than the little knight.

"Wait, is this the first major boss encounter? God damn, the scaling on this thing is massive," Silver whistled, eyeing the monolithic Husk Guard pacing back and forth.

The creature clutched a reinforced club carved from ancient subterranean wood, its blank, lifeless eyes completely devoid of sanity.

The moment its gaze locked onto the protagonist, it let out a guttural, insectoid screech and began charging heavily across the stone floor.

Relying on his experience with the earlier mobs, Silver assumed a standard melee strike would apply a heavy knockback effect to break the creature’s forward momentum.

He stood his ground against the approaching guard, firmly swinging his bone nail in a wide horizontal arc.

The weapon flashed with a crisp line of white light, biting deeply into the creature’s armored hide and sending a spray of dark, corrupted fluid flying across the stone.

He was already winding up for a follow-up strike when he realized the massive insect hadn’t budged an inch; instead, it continued its relentless forward march.

The colossal wooden club swung downward in a vicious arc, aimed straight at the little knight’s head.

"Wait, what?" Silver blurted out, his fingers completely freezing as his character stood paralyzed on the screen.

He was still processing why his standard knockback mechanic had utterly failed when the heavy wooden impact slammed directly into his character model.

BOOM!

Two full masks in the upper left corner of his HUD instantly shattered into digital dust.

Before the dust could even settle, the guard effortlessly hoisted the massive club back over its shoulder for a follow-up strike.

Silver violently yanked his analog stick in the opposite direction, desperately fleeing across the cavern floor.

"Holy shit! Two full points of damage in one hit?!" Silver yelled, his face going completely pale with shock. "Is this guy serious? If this is just the baseline boss, two hits will literally delete my entire health bar from existence!"

Losing a single mask shard was an acceptable margin of error, but watching forty percent of his vital gauge vanish in an instant sent a massive wave of psychological panic crashing through his chest.

He carefully retreated to an adjacent corridor to harvest soul energy from a few roaming trash mobs, using the focus spell to repair his shattered masks before heading back into the arena.

"Alright, I’ve got the timing down now," Silver muttered, taking a deep, calculated breath.

He locked his focus entirely onto the monster’s weapon hand, preparing to dash backward the exact second the club reached the apex of its arc.

During the first few exchanges, his spatial awareness was slightly off, causing him to take another devastating hit from the weapon’s massive hitbox.

But once he internalized the exact limits of the attack range, he managed to execute a series of frantic, razor-thin dodges to keep his health bar entirely intact.

"Get one hit, reposition, reset," Silver chanted out loud, precisely timing his counter-thrusts as he swung the bone nail.

During his initial attempts, he had been far too greedy, constantly trying to force a second hit before the guard recovered, which routinely left him trapped in the recovery animation during a counterattack.

Having learned his lesson the hard way, he adjusted his strategy to a conservative poke-and-run style, prioritizing spatial safety over raw damage output.

The mechanical penalty of losing two masks was simply too severe to gamble with.

He casually backstepped after a clean hit, but noticed the massive insect didn’t immediately raise its club to retaliate as expected.

Just as he was questioning the behavioral shift, a violent, glowing white shockwave erupted from the stone floor, racing straight toward his position.

"Oh great, it has a ranged phase too! This thing has a surprisingly deep moveset," Silver yelled, desperately hitting his jump key to barely clear the lethal shockwave.

Over the next few minutes of intense combat, he successfully negated the monster’s offensives by exercising absolute mechanical discipline and completely suppressing his greed.

He patiently exploited the post-swing recovery windows, darting inside to score clean, decisive thrusts.

Under the final, heavy strike of his bone nail, the massive armored carapace violently ruptured, dissolving into a massive shower of glittering Geo shells.

"Wait, that was it? Is that seriously the first boss fight of the game?" Silver scoffed proudly, guiding his little knight to vacuum up every single piece of Geo scattered across the floor.

He glanced over at his secondary monitor to check the stream chat, expecting a wall of praise.

[ChatRoom_Ranger: Bro, Sprout Studio literally just went live on Surge for a dev stream, and Cole just mentioned something on camera...]

[GamerDad_Lou: He said that’s not a boss. That’s just a basic elite monster...]

"An elite mob? You guys are out of your minds," Silver deadpanned, assuming his chat was just aggressively gaslighting him.

Without wasting a single second, he pulled up a new tab and clicked directly into the official Sprout Studio broadcast.

On screen, Cole was leaning back in his office chair, a profoundly smug, mysterious grin plastered across his face.

"Are you guys seriously telling me you’re struggling with a basic elite mob? There’s no way. No shot," Cole chuckled, responding to the wave of complaints flooding his own developer chat.

"You guys honestly can’t handle a standard elite encounter? Do you want me to boot up a fresh build and clear it right now to show you how a professional developer plays? Fine, let me show you what real gaming looks like. This elite mob is pretty simple to defeat, actually."
