Chapter 51: Chapter #51: A Challenge

In the City of Tears, a beautiful, haunting singing voice constantly echoed through the rain-slicked streets, mourning the lost prosperity of the capital.

Later in the game, after acquiring the Dream Nail, players discovered they could strike this specific NPC to harvest a single point of Dream Essence.

However, doing so permanently killed the singer, leaving the empty, decaying city with nothing but the endless, hollow sound of the falling rain.

The bosses were undeniably brutal, but players quickly realized they were visibly growing in mechanical skill with every single punishing encounter.

Just as the Mantis Lords had taught them, sharpening your edge was the only way to survive in this deceptively gentle insectoid world.

The crushing difficulty was a core pillar of the experience, but a top-voted comment on the game’s forum perfectly captured the community’s mindset.

"It isn’t just the speedrunners clearing Radiant bosses or conquering the Pantheon of Hallownest with all four bindings who deserve the title," the user wrote. "Every single little knight who dares to swing their nail at a god inherits the unyielding will of their predecessors."

Throughout the grueling campaign, players frequently crossed paths with another wandering traveler named Quirrel.

He was an incredibly charming NPC who had journeyed into the depths to witness the forgotten prosperity of Hallownest, acting as a narrative parallel to the protagonist.

Encountering him at various quiet landmarks allowed players to briefly share the staggering weight of this epic adventure with a kindred spirit.

Hallownest had long since lost its ancient prosperity.

The sudden disappearance of the Pale King and the devastating arrival of the Infection had reduced the once-thriving kingdom into an extremely desolate wasteland.

Yet despite the suffocating gloom, Quirrel remained endlessly open-minded and optimistic.

Sitting together overlooking the treacherous, glittering peaks of the Crystal Mound, he simply marveled at the beautiful scenery, calling it incredibly magnificent in its decay.

It was the sheer, suffocating difficulty of the void that made Quirrel’s hidden Dream Nail dialogue feel so profoundly moving.

As the little knight walked this grueling path to challenge the gods of the realm, reading the traveler’s mind revealed a simple, beautiful truth.

"To live an age, yet remember so little... Perhaps I should be thankful? All tragedy erased. I see only wonders..."

The map of the underground kingdom unfolded slowly and organically, stretching from the initial Forgotten Crossroads all the way to the Howling Cliffs.

When players finally paused to check their completed parchment, they were stunned to realize just how massive of a journey they had undertaken without even noticing.

All the industry analysts who had prematurely declared the game a commercial failure immediately shut their mouths.

The global sales metrics were rising at a staggering rate, and the community’s overall completion percentages were steadily climbing every single day.

"Carter, your instincts were absolutely flawless on this one," Ivan admitted over a private phone call.

The Xbox CEO had spent his entire weekend personally clearing the massive campaign.

During his playthrough, he had intimately felt the sheer, uncompromising spirit of the lead developer bleeding through the mechanics.

No cost too great.

No mind to think.

No will to break.

No voice to cry suffering.

Born from the hands of gods and the suffocating dark of the void, the player was tasked with sealing away the blinding, plaguing light that infected the dreams of the kingdom.

You are the Vessel.

You are the Hollow Knight.

"Honestly, I wish he had pitched Bloodborne as the launch title instead. I am dying to see what that project actually looks like in motion," Ivan said, his tone buzzing with genuine excitement.

Before today, he never could have imagined that a two-dimensional, indie side-scroller could actually drive physical Xbox hardware adoption.

Even though the spike was only a few thousand units, it was more than enough concrete data to force the vocal skeptics on his corporate board to shut their mouths.

"I have to admit, I didn’t expect the final product to be this incredibly powerful," Carter muttered thoughtfully.

When he had first reviewed the cute, hand-drawn concept art, he couldn’t possibly equate that charming aesthetic with such a brutal difficulty curve.

But after actually sitting down with the controller, he realized that the punishing mechanical operation had absolutely nothing to do with the cute visuals.

Gripping the bone nail, the core combat loop was incredibly tight and responsive.

Even though he eventually unlocked devastating late-game spells like Abyss Shriek and Descending Dark, Carter still heavily preferred utilizing his standard melee strikes to systematically dismantle monsters.

The single NPC that surprised him the absolute most was the tiny, unassuming fly he had first encountered back in Dirtmouth.

Who could have ever predicted that the greedy, groveling little shopkeeper who couldn’t even navigate the crossroads was actually a legendary master of the nail?

Watching the tiny bug suddenly unsheathe a massive greatsword that was physically larger than some of the actual bosses in the Pantheon made countless players slap their desks and scream in sheer hype.

Great Nailsage Sly was a pinnacle, god-tier boss encounter hidden deep within the late-game content.

He could only be challenged through the punishing Godseeker rituals, waiting patiently for the player at the absolute summit of the Pantheon of the Sage.

"Since he forced this launch right on New Year’s Day, I genuinely feel like he’s deliberately staggering his releases so his own games don’t cannibalize each other at the next Game Awards," Ivan analyzed.

Looking at the sheer polish of the January 1st launch build, it was glaringly obvious that the core architecture of the game had been finished a long time ago.

"Your analysis sounds incredibly arrogant, but honestly, I think you’re absolutely right," Carter sighed, rubbing his temples.

"But aren’t the players the most outrageous variable in this entire equation?" Carter genuinely couldn’t help but complain.

Seeing the Steam review section entirely flooded with [Very Easy] ratings made his scalp tingle with secondhand anxiety.

Did these gamers not realize they were actively provoking a sadist and jeopardizing their own future?

"Heh, well, something even more outrageous just popped up on my feed," Ivan chuckled.

He had been idly refreshing the global gaming news aggregate when he stumbled across a newly trending video clip.

He instantly recognized the uploader; it was a highly respected, hardcore speedrunner within the competitive gaming community.

The elite player had recorded a live face-cam video immediately after clearing the grueling Pantheon of Hallownest, screaming triumphantly into his microphone.

"Hey Nova! You sadistic sonovavitch! I already cleared your hardest content! When are you dropping the next game?!" he shouted. "Four bindings and five Pantheons?! Is that really all you’ve got?!"

Silver’s eyes were violently bloodshot red, staring into the lens with the manic, unhinged intensity of a man pushed to the absolute brink of his sanity.

His usually styled hair was seriously disheveled, sticking up in sweaty, tangled clumps from days of agonizing trial and error.

Deep, bruised eyebags hung heavily on his pale face, a grim physical testament to the sleepless, grueling marathon he had just survived.

He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving as he gripped the edge of his desk to steady his violently trembling hands.

Ivan immediately forwarded the video link to Carter, and the two executives fell into a stunned silence after watching the clip.

Did this speedrunner have any idea how many millions of casual players were currently hard-stuck and crying on the first two Pantheons?

Over at Sprout Studio, the junior developers had also linked the viral speedrun video in the internal company chat.

Scrolling through the community comments beneath the clip, the staff couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

[FramePerfect_God: This is literally the only human being I have ever seen with fully functional hands.]

[KeyboardWarrior99: See? I told you guys this game was Very Easy. You just need to have hands to beat it.]

[Salty_Tears: Back before my hands got crippled by carpal tunnel, I used to clear games this fast too.]

[LoreMaster_Matt: A direct declaration of war against the sadist from a hardcore player. LMAO, we are so doomed.]

[Path_of_Pain_Victim: While the rest of us are still literally howling in agony on the Path of Pain, this absolute madlad is out here speedrunning the Path of Happiness.]

[BugCatcher_Bob: (╥╯^╰╥) His sacrifice kept Hallownest alive, but he just signed our death warrants.]

Ethan Vale sat quietly in his executive office chair, resting his head heavily against the leather headrest.

He kept his eyes closed for a long, silent moment, not uttering a single word.

Outside the glass walls of his office, several idle developers had gathered in small groups by the water cooler, whispering excitedly.

"What do you guys think the boss’s reaction is going to be after watching that call-out video?" one programmer asked nervously.

"The players this year are just insanely stubborn," Cole chuckled. "I already have a terrible feeling that he’s going to aggressively crank up the intensity for the next project."

"Well, Bloodborne is still a few months out. There’s plenty of time for him to squeeze some more tears out of the player base," another developer grinned.

"Honestly, if I were the boss, I’d reward that speedrunner’s arrogance by dropping an ’easy’ new game on their heads right this second."

While they were busy gossiping, Ethan suddenly stood up from his desk and pushed open his office door.

The chattering employees instantly shut their mouths, looking at their boss with guilty, expectant smiles.

"Since Bloodborne is still a ways out, let’s build a quick, small-scale game to help the players pass the time," Ethan said calmly, glancing down at his smartphone before walking directly toward the main conference room.

"Notify the entire team. We’re having an all-hands meeting right now."

"..." 30x

The developers exchanged stunned, wide-eyed glances, practically swallowing hard in unison.

Was the sadist actually accepting the speedrunner’s public declaration of war?

"For this next project, we are going to make a very simple rhythm game," Ethan announced as he took his place at the head of the table. "It will operate entirely on a single-button mechanic."
