Chapter 53 - #53: It’s a Trap...

Chapter 53: Chapter #53: It’s a Trap...

As soon as the clock struck midnight, the game instantly unlocked for download across the globe.

At a mere three dollars, Ethan seemed to have perfectly weaponized the latent gambler psychology of the entire gaming community.

Within sixty seconds of hitting zero, the total download count had already shattered the one-million mark.

Silver booted up the game the absolute second the installation finished. "Alright chat, we are going straight for that bounty tonight. If we win, I’m raffling off the 500 bucks and the console to you guys; I literally just want the limited-edition badge."

As he spoke, he glanced over at his rapidly scrolling chat monitor.

[LootGoblin99: Let’s go! I just opened a hundred different pro-gamer streams at once. My odds of winning this raffle just went up a hundredfold!]

[TrollKing_X: Why rely on a raffle? I’m literally going to win this bounty myself!]

[Hollow_Knight_Tears: The boss is really out here trying to clear a brand new game, while I’m still physically dying over and over again trying to deliver that Delicate Flower.]

[Mantis_Victim: The Mantis Lords literally abused me for seven straight hours, and you expect me to compete for a rhythm game bounty?]

[Piano_Pro_88: Honestly... I’ve been a classical music prodigy since I was a kid. This bounty is mine.]

Loading into the first level, the background shifted into a vast, boundless expanse of the cosmos.

Suspended directly in the center of the screen was a narrow track constructed from interconnected rectangular tiles.

Two small, rotating spheres—one red and one blue—orbited each other, waiting for the first input.

The core mechanics of the game were deceptively simple.

The two colored spheres would alternately strike the sequential tiles on the track.

All the player had to do was find the correct musical timing and hit their chosen hotkey the exact moment the sphere aligned with the center of the tile.

By following the rhythm, players would complete the song and chart a course through the vast, boundless cosmos.

The game featured over twelve distinct planetary biomes, each paired with its own fantastic, original musical track.

Furthermore, successfully completing the first six stages would permanently unlock a hyper-speed mode designed to push human reaction limits.

"Da-da-da-da!" Ruby hummed, nodding her head enthusiastically to the infectious beat.

She rested her fingers gently on her mechanical keyboard, seamlessly tapping along to the energetic rhythm of the tutorial track.

Every single time the sphere struck a tile, the audio synced perfectly with a heavy, satisfying drumbeat, making the gameplay feel incredibly dynamic and engaging.

"The tactile feedback is so good! As expected, you can always trust the sadist when it comes to audio design!" Ruby cheered, pressing her keys with eager confidence.

The sudden visual change in the upcoming track path completely failed to trigger her defensive instincts.

Hitting the first sharp corner of the stage, she habitually maintained her previous tempo and pressed the spacebar.

The rotating sphere instantly exploded into a shower of digital fireworks, and the level abruptly ended.

"Wait, huh? Ah?! What?!" Ruby stammered, completely unable to process the sudden failure before the song had even truly begun.

"There’s a massive visual delay on that corner! The rhythm completely changes!" Ruby yelled, caught entirely off guard as she furiously mashed the restart button.

As the heavy, rhythmic drums kicked off once more in her broadcast, her chat was already dying of laughter.

[ByteSizedChaos: I literally warned you guys. Did you honestly think the sadist was just going to hand out some money for free?]

[RhythmRider_X: A hidden speed variation on the very first corner. This developer is so incredibly toxic, I love it!]

[NoobSlayer99: Dying on the very first level is actually pathetic. Skill issue.]

[Audio_Nerd_22: Ear: Here comes the drum beat! Brain: Hit the key! Hand: Wait, what?... OH!]

[GlitchWizard_00: Watching her fail right at the starting line has already ruined my mentality for the night.]

[Toxic_Timmy: Run while you still can! I’m blind guessing that this game is just designed to completely destroy our sanity one song at a time.]

[CasualScrub_88: You literally have to scream at the monitor to play this game!]

Ruby booted up the level for a second attempt.

In her eyes, that minor mistake wasn’t a big deal at all; as long as she paid close attention to the visual corners moving forward, clearing the game would be relatively easy.

Sure enough, her second attempt went infinitely smoother than the first.

As long as she actively anticipated the sharp, varying curves, she could naturally feel the shifting tempo of the song.

The digital path stretched out across the screen, set against the gorgeous backdrop of a vast, swirling galaxy.

The beautiful, rhythmic soundtrack filled her headset, creating a profoundly satisfying sense of mathematical beauty as she navigated the track.

"Da-da-da-da!" Ruby chanted softly, nodding her head as she executed every sharp corner with absolute focus.

The first level wasn’t very long, and she quickly spotted the finish line approaching in time with the music’s crescendo.

However, resting directly on the final straightaway leading to the goal was a bright blue snail icon.

’What is that?’ Before she could even process the visual cue, her rotating sphere landed directly on the symbol.

The brutal reality of the game instantly provided an answer: the snail was a massive deceleration trap.

The absolute second she crossed the threshold, the orbital rotation of her spheres violently decelerated.

The finish line was literally inches away, but because she had internalized the rapid tempo of the previous section, her fingers instinctively pressed the key before her brain could register the slowdown.

"Ahhh!! He absolutely put that there on purpose! It’s literally right at the finish line!" Ruby shrieked, slamming her hand down onto her desk to vent her shattered mentality.

The end of the level had been tantalizingly close, and the crushing frustration of failing at the one-yard line flooded her chest.

[Predictable_Doom_99: I knew it! This is the classic, routine psychological torture of the sadist.]

[LoreMaster_Matt: Nova: You thought my bounties were going to be that easy to claim?]

[Salty_Tears_00: He is pure evil for putting a tempo-shift right at the very end.]

[PixelProphet_X: At first glance, it looks like a super relaxing indie rhythm game. But once you play it, you realize it’s an auditory meat grinder.]

[Veteren_Gamer_88: Thanks for the warning. That horribly familiar feeling of dread is already creeping back.]

Sure enough, almost every single player who booted up the game at launch stumbled blindly into those exact two traps.

And after every single failure, the brutal mechanics forced them to restart the song from the very beginning.

Every stage featured completely original music and entirely unique track layouts, delivering an incredibly tight, tactile mechanical experience.

Across the globe, countless players were frantically sprinting through the early levels, desperately chasing that massive cash bounty.

While the first and second stages served as functional tutorials to introduce sharp corners and basic tempo-shifts, the difficulty curve completely skyrocketed by the third track.

Silver aggressively wiped a thick layer of cold sweat from his forehead, already feeling a heavy knot of anxiety in his stomach.

Sure enough, free money was incredibly hard to earn, and swallowing your pride was even harder.

Earning a bounty from the sadist was proving to be doubly torturous.

He should have known that a five hundred bucks payout, an X-Box console and a Steam limited-edition digital badge wouldn’t be handed out for free.

The only silver lining was that the audio production was absolutely phenomenal; syncing his inputs to the heavy, pulsing rhythm felt incredibly satisfying.

But failing a late-stage transition and being forced to restart the entire song was a massive psychological blow.

As the next stage loaded up, a soft, beautiful melody drifted into his headset, and he quickly glanced at the title of the track. Love Letters.

"Chat, I swear the sadist put his entire heart and soul into the soundtrack, but designed the actual gameplay with his bare feet!" Silver grumbled.

He tapped along to the melody to guide his spheres forward, only to realize the layout for this stage had completely abandoned standard straight lines and ninety-degree corners.

Instead, the geometric path stretched out diagonally, forcing his spheres to navigate around jagged, triangular loops.

"Honestly, if every single track in this game is an original composition, three dollars is an absolute steal. But that’s only assuming you can actually survive long enough to hear the later songs," Silver muttered.

The tempo of the track was relatively slow, but the actual map architecture was anything but simple.

The visual cues plastered across the tiles were becoming increasingly complex.

Midway through the song, a swirling vortex symbol appeared on the path for the very first time, instantly reversing the orbital rotation of his spheres the second he touched it.

Fortunately, Silver had been keeping a paranoid watch on the upcoming tiles, deliberately adjusting his mental timing to accommodate the sudden reverse, keeping his rhythm perfectly intact.

"I was actually getting a little hypnotized by the music just now and almost dropped my focus. Thank god that vortex didn’t completely ruin my run," he said, rhythmically mashing his spacebar while checking his chat monitor.

Sometimes, he genuinely had to admire Ethan’s obsessive dedication to his craft.

The game was literally priced at three dollars, yet the developer took the mechanical polish more seriously than anyone else in the industry.

Riding the groove of the music, the upcoming path suddenly jutted out into a rapid, uneven triangle.

He tightened his grip on the keyboard, fully convinced he was prepared for the tempo shift, but the violent, off-beat corner still caught him completely off guard.

BOOM.

The spheres shattered, and he was booted back to the start.

He glanced numbly at the stage counter sitting at the top of his screen: Level 4.

The confident smile instantly froze on his face. He stared dead-eyed into his webcam, opening his mouth to speak, but it took a long time for him to finally whisper two words.

"Run away."
