Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary

Chapter 573 - 573 One Last Foray into Enemy Territory

Avery and Cerise discussed countermeasures against Delia for nearly thirty minutes before coming up with a strategy that they figured would catch the woman by surprise and crush whatever scheme she had planned.

"So, we're in agreement that we spring the trap and break out of it? Truthfully, it's not too late for you to pull out."

"No, I'm not going to run away scared. Especially when you told me that there are higherups that plan on making my life more difficult if I do. To think that they're so petty that they'd try and bar me from taking jobs associated with the Alliance Police." Avery said in a huff.

While no one other than Cerise could claim that Avery had broken his contract with her, there were apparently a couple of members within the upper echelons of the Alliance Police planning on spreading rumors that Avery had failed to uphold his end of the agreement. From there they would put pressure on other command officers within the Alliance Police not to work with the Asteria Mercenary Company.

Naturally, Avery saw this for what it was. A narrow-minded intimidation tactic that was doomed to fail.

"Don't worry about them. Once this is all over, I'll make sure to do some house cleaning. I may only be a commander, but that's because going any higher would take me out of the field. When push comes to shove, I can call on far more authority than my rank would normally allow." Cerise said, a vicious grin on her face.

Avery almost started to feel bad for the people that had drawn her wrath. Almost.

With their plan set, the two of them went their separate ways.

Avery returned to the flagship's hangar and found his three wives happily talking and giggling with each other.

When he entered the cockpit, Avery watched the three of them go silent and turn towards him with their lips turned up into wide smiles.

"Sorry for the wait. Cerise had something she wanted to talk about with me. I'll give you all a briefing along with the others when we get back to the Intrepid."

Avery then took his seat in the pilot's chair and waited for permission to disembark.

The entire time, Kasandra, Jasmine, and Liesel were just smiling and whispering with each other. They knew how good Avery's hearing was, so they kept their voices down so that he barely could make out any of the words that they said.

Though he was pretty sure that he heard Liesel say, "And that's when we'll get him."

During the flight from Cerise's command vessel back to the Intrepid, Avery's thoughts were on what his wives were planning.

He was not sure exactly why, but he felt a sense of anticipation and trepidation.

Soon enough, he was flying through the Intrepid's hangar and initiated the landing sequence into his designated spot.

Once Dauntless was secure and in place, he got up from his chair and began walking towards the exit.

Yet, before he got too far, he was suddenly ambushed.

Kasandra had swept his legs out from under his feet, and as he was falling backwards, Liesel caught him.

From there he was lifted into the air, with Liesel hoisting him up by his arms and Kasandra grabbing his legs.

After that, Jasmine was below him with her hands against his back to support him.

"Um, girls? What's going on? And why does this feel like I'm being kidnapped right now."

Instead of an actually response, the three of them just giggled and began dragging Avery deeper into the Dauntless.

It was not long before they were standing in front of his room, and when the doors opened, a distinct floral smell reached his nose.

Angling his head so that he could see, Avery saw that there were candles and incense lit, along with flower petals that had been spread around.

His normal bedspread had also been replaced with something more colorful and expensive.

Obviously, if Avery had wanted to, he could have resisted his impromptu abduction but considering what he knew what was about to happen, he was perfectly fine with letting his wives do as they pleased.

Once they were close to the bed, Avery felt weightless for just a moment as they tossed him onto the mattress.

When he hit, he bounced up a single time before coming to a stop.

"This couldn't have waited until we got back to our quarters on the Intrepid?" Avery asked.

"No, it couldn't I've been gone for quite a while, and Jasmine and Liesel agree that you haven't been giving them enough attention. Since today's one of the few days that we have off from the job, even if the party's over, we're going to continue celebrating." Kasandra replied.

Before Avery really had a chance to gather his thoughts, clothes were flying off and he and his three wives indulged in a night of unrestrained passion.

Avery woke up the next day feeling quite refreshed.

'I've never been more grateful for whatever changes my body has undergone.' Avery thought, remembering everything he had done last night.

Had he still been just a normal but fit human, he would have barely been able to keep up with one of his wives.

Fortunately, his stamina was nearly endless, and he had been able to keep going until all three of them were worn out.

Still, as blissful of a night as it had been, Avery had not forgotten that he still had one last mission that needed accomplishing.

He was the only one that could do it, so he was being sent back into the Zatis Consortium to bring the Odium Syndicate to an end.

With those thoughts in mind, he got out of bed and made his way to the shower.

It was a bit cramped compared to what he had gotten used to on the Intrepid, but the hot water washing over him felt nice, and he stepped out ready to tackle his work for the day.

To say that it was difficult to get everything ready was an understatement.

Cerise was providing truly unprecedented support for this mission since the danger was far great than normal.

Except, the two of them could not work out in the open and needed to keep things as secret as possible.

There was no telling who Delia had on her payroll, and while Avery had done everything he could feasibly think of to keep her from communicating with anyone unmonitored, she almost certainly had some means of getting information when she really wanted to.

Fortunately, things went well, and everything was ready within just a few days. Just in time as well.

Naturally, the Odium Syndicate needed to come up with some sort of response to losing nearly their entire presences in the Dramid Alliance. So, when all of their important members were meeting, that was when Avery planned on making his move.

Regrettably, doing so would require Delia's assistance.

Though he could get into the Zatis Consortium easily enough using his false identity as Ferdinand Karas, reaching the meeting place of the Odium Syndicate's higherups would be far more difficult. At least, without someone to give them proper access to slip through the criminal organization's defenses.

"Okay, we're good to go. Set a course for the nearest border checkpoint." Avery instructed.

The Intrepid's massive frame turned through space until it was pointing in the right direction.

Then, the quiet, nearly inaudible hum of the light speed drive charging up echoed through the ship.

With one last look at Cerise's fleet, Avery turned his attention ahead.

A moment later, the light all around them looked like it was elongating and the Intrepid began the journey back towards the Zatis Consortium.

"There were a lot more warships stationed on both sides than the last time we were here." Avery commented after they had slipped across the border.

He could practically feel the tension permeating everything in the area, as the Zatis Consortium's military and the Alliance Police stared each other down.

Avery knew that Cerise and those of like minds within the Alliance Police wanted to stop at nothing to stop a war from breaking out, but from what he could tell, they were just one small incident away from an all-out conflict.

'I guess that just makes our mission that much more important. Hopefully we can prevent things from escalating.'

However, just three days later, when they were around halfway to the base where the Odium Syndicate leaders were gathering, Avery received an emergency transmission from Cerise's closest adjutant.

Despite the best efforts of many people on both sides, war had finally broken out.

Battles across the border had already begun, and more and more ships were coming in every day as the fighting escalated.

"Damn it. This is too important for me to make a decision on my own. I know that Cerise said not to contact her unless it's dire, but we need to talk. I'm connecting to her now." Avery said, a truly grave expression on his face.
