Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 577 - 577 Springing the TrapNow that the station's defenses were under their control, Avery, Kasandra, Ezra, Olivia, and Kaiden had a remarkably easier time dealing with the guards that had been hunting them down.
Quickly the five of them swept through anyone in their path, and it was not long before all of their enemies were either dead or unable to continue fighting.
The station's defense drones flitted around them, and while they had been annoying to deal with before, they made for useful allies.
Soon, Liesel and Burke met up with them along with the team they were in charge of.
"Can I leave sweeping the station to the rest of you? It's time that I go and deal with Delia. I'm tired of letting her string us along." Avery said.
The others were of a similar opinion to him, having become fed up with the woman's antics.
She had been useful in completing their mission, but also insufferable and at times detrimental to their objectives.
"Avery, are you sure that you don't want any of us to come with you? There's no telling what that bi*ch has planned."
Kasandra was obviously worried about him, but he would rather go and deal with this himself without putting any of the others at risk.
He already had a good idea of what was waiting for him, and Delia almost certainly wanted him alive.
However, the same could not be said for anyone else.
"Plus, you know that Jasmine is ready to send in my back up whenever necessary."
"Fine, I'll let you go, but only because I know that it's her who will be assisting you. When you get yourself into more trouble than you can handle, I'm sure that she can bail you out." Kasandra said, shaking her head in resignation.
With that, Avery parted ways with the others and began following after Delia.
Luckily, he was able to track the terminal she still had on her person, as well as several homing beacons that had been sewn into her clothing. No one trusted her for a second, so Avery had made sure that they could find her even if she slipped away at some point.
It was possible that she had ditched everything to avoid detection, but that would mean she was running around entirely naked and had found someone to take all of her clothes and her terminal and go running through the station with them.
Avery could see that all of the trackers were still together and moving towards the bottom of the base.
This was clearly a trap, and he knew it.
She had taunted him just before she left and made it clear that he was her target.
Truthfully, he had thought about just ignoring Delia and blowing the entire station up with her still on it once they were done.
Yet, he doubted she had not accounted for this.
She probably had a method of escape already prepared in such a case, and he would rather finish this now than have to watch over his shoulder waiting for Delia to make her next move against him.
Over the time she had been on the Intrepid, he had learned that she was the meticulous time and did not mind waiting around for the right opportunity to strike.
For all Avery knew, he could blow up the station, and for the next three years there would be no sign of the woman. Presumably she would be dead, but then out of nowhere he would be caught in some scheme of hers that she had been preparing for months.
No, it was better that he got this over with now while he already had at least a general idea about what she was trying to do and had contingencies in place to deal with any traps he might stumble into.
'Looks like she's stopped. Or she finally ditched all of the trackers. Either way, that must be where everything is set up.' Avery thought as he rushed through the station's corridors.
Along the way, he ran into a few more security personnel, but they were already panicking as a small group of drones chased them around.
Avery dealt with them easily enough, and four drones broke off to help escort him.
Though he did not want to risk anyone from his crew getting caught up in Delia's traps, he certainly had no qualms about using the Odium Syndicate's assault drones.
Eventually, he reached a lift that was right above the storge area where Delia was presumably waiting.
It was close to the very bottom of the station, and where the majority of the daily goods for the people who lived here were stocked.
This was basically the kind of place where no one would ever go as the distribution was fully automated. Of course, this made it the perfect place to prepare a trap. So long as you could lure someone in.
'I honestly might be crazy for doing this.'
Avery stepped into the lift along with his drone escort.
Yet, before he could even press the button to descend to his destination, the doors slammed shut and locked.
Avery acted immediately, using his psionic abilities to shred the flow of energy of everything around him.
This stopped the lift from moving on its own, and the paracletic gas stored in multiple containers that had been hidden in the air vents from being released.
His actions did have one unfortunate outcome though.
With all of its systems destroyed, the lift was no longer held in place and started plummeting.
Avery had thought that the emergency brakes would only need a couple of seconds to engage, but it seemed that they were tied to something he had destroyed.
"Fucking cheap bastards didn't install a secondary emergency break along the rails!" Avery shouted as he the sealed metal container he was in plummeted.
It would not be long before he reached terminal velocity due tot eh distance from where he had started and the bottom of the station.
As durable as he had become, he did not want to test how he would fare when the lift smashed into the ground below.
If he survived, which he honestly doubted he would, the experience would not be an enjoyable one.
So, to avoid ending up as crushed meat paste in a crumpled can, Avery jumped up and punched a hole in the roof of the lift.
Hastily he dragged himself out and leapt towards one of the rails and grabbed ahold.
Had a normal person tried this same maneuver, they would have broken several bones and then bounced off to continue plummeting to their doom.
Thankfully, Avery had enough strength to dig his hands into the metal of the shaft and hold himself still, while only having the wind knocked out of him from the impact.
A few seconds later, he heard a cacophonous rumbling sound as the lift crashed into the ground.
Some explosions followed and he had to tighten his grip as the entire shaft shook from the disaster.
"Whew. Almost got myself killed in a trap of my own making. Note to self. Do not stop the flow of energy while inside a moving structure."
Avery lamented the loss of his drone escorts, but they had been unable to escape the lift with him.
The opening he had created was only just big enough for him to pull himself out of the. The drones had not been able to follow.
Nevertheless, he had not been counting on them for much anyway.
"I guess I'd better get going." Avery said with a sigh.
He then gripped ahold of one of the rails and let himself slide down.
The gauntlets he had on thankfully protected his hands from getting burned and scrapped up.
It was not long before he was closing in on the bottom of the shaft and could see the devastation left in the wake of the falling life.
There was a giant crater in the floor, and everything around it was bent out of place or torn to pieces.
Some fires had even broken out, and the station's fire suppression system as working to keep them from spreading.
After only quickly looking around, Avery found the best way to navigate the wreckage, and dexterously jumped around until he exited the shaft.
Outside to it, all he saw were giant warehouses that spanned from floor to ceiling.
There were certainly a lot of goods stored here, but they were not why Avery was here.
Purposefully he walked towards the building that his tackers indicated.
When he was only a few meters away from the entrance, the doors opened on their own.
"Well, that isn't ominous at all." Avery mumbled sarcastically.
Before going in, he checked his terminal one last time and found a message saying that Jasmine had deployed his support. They were in position and ready to act whenever necessary.
With that confirmation, Avery put the device away and headed into what was undoubtably a trap with a high level of caution.
The path was already open, so it was not hard for Avery to follow it to where Delia was waiting.
Once he arrived at the center of the building, he was surprised to see that she was actually present.
Except, she was not alone.
A man who Avery knew to be Doctor Layton Sarelett was there as well.
"After being so cautious around me, I'm surprised that you actually followed me all the way here on your own. I had several plans in place to lure you down here, or to draw you to other advantageous locations if that failed. But you just came right to us by yourself." Delia said, a genuine and malicious smile on her face.
"Yeah, you can save the gloating monologue. I'm just going to kill you both and get back to doing more important work."
