Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 579 - 579 Cerise’s InterventionWith the flick of her wrist, Cerise sent one of her wires flying towards the monsters that had Avery pinned down.
She was not surprised when the molecular wire failed to cut entirely through the creature's head and was stopped at its spine.
On her way to this location, she had been forced to fight several similar mutated monsters that had been roaming outside of the warehouse.
The moment that Avery had entered the building, a horde had been released outside to make sure that no one was able to interfere.
Of course, Cerise and the troops she had brought with her had fought their way through the monsters, and she had snuck inside to help Avery out.
Truthfully, she had been surprised to find him in such a state, but after locating the control unit for the sound generators and disabling it, he had started to recover.
Obviously, Cerise had a bunch of questions she wanted answers to.
The sound had not affected her in the slightest while it was debilitating to Avery. She had also heard the term Awakened tossed around by the man named Layton Sarelett.
She had heard the term before in relation to people that possessed unusually powerful psionic abilities.
During a mission twelve years ago, she had encountered such an individual, and they had proven difficult to deal with.
'Well, I suppose that I'll ask Avery for whatever details he has and look into the subject more on my own. Though, if we can take Doctor Sarelett alive, I'm sure that he'll give me all of the information I want.' Cerise thought as she glanced in the man's direction.
Once he had recovered from the shock of her appearance, he ordered his monsters to kill her.
Unlike the ones outside that seemed to lack any sentience, the four that had been restraining Avery seemed to possess a modicum of intelligence. At least enough to follow rudimentary orders.
This was disconcerting, and a fact that Cerise was already planning on omitting from any reports she made.
She knew that the leadership Dramid Alliance was not filled entirely with upstanding people that were paragons of justice.
There were plenty of individuals with power that would be more than willing to exploit Doctor Sarelett's work for their own ends if they thought it was beneficial.
People that had been mutated into difficult to kill monsters that were capable of being controlled was certainly something someone would find interest in.
Fortunately, she could easily make sure that there was no evidence to support that these monsters in anyway could take commands.
Cerise would kill them before long, and even if she captured Layton Sarelett alive, he would not be returning to the Dramid Alliance in any condition to spread his knowledge. Cerise would make sure of that.
"Impossible! How are you here right now?! There's a war going on right now! The Alliance Police would never allow one of their top assets to join a mission well behind enemy lines like this!" Delia shouted, genuinely shocked and frightened to see Cerise.
It seemed that for all of her planning and scheming, she had not anticipated that Cerise might stow away on Avery's ship and joining him in his endeavor to ride the universe of the Odium Syndicate once and for all.
However, Cerise had become fed-up with being unable to take action herself, and she knew how much danger Avery and his mercenary company would be in this time.
Her own sense of right and wrong would not allow her to send him so far into the Zatis Consortium without some sort of support.
So, she had smuggled herself and her most trusted subordinates, except for a single adjutant she had left to run things in her absence, onboard the Intrepid.
There she had waited until Jasmine gave her the signal to head out.
Instead of waiting to see what Delia had planned, Avery had chosen to put himself at risk to protect everyone else. And judging from what she had seen, Cerise knew that he would have been beaten if she had not come to assist him.
Of course, that was all part of his plan. Cerise was honestly just extra muscle following the orders that had been given to her. It was a bit nostalgic. Reminding her of when she had just joined the Alliance Police and just did as she was told.
"You're right. My superiors never would have allowed me to come here. Which is why I didn't tell any of them and left a sophisticated android to take my place. Though, I am glad to know that none of my officers are traitors. I did not believe that any of them would sell me out, but there was a slight worry in the back of my head that you would have learned about my presence. It seems that there was no need for me to be concerned though."
Cerise deftly manipulated her wires as she danced around the monsters attacking her.
Each movement of her hands caused deep gashes to appear on their bodies, and soon they were moving very sluggishly.
She had targeted their muscles and tendons, and even as mutated as they were, it was impossible for the monsters to move without the proper internal support structures.
While Cerise was busy dealing the three of the monsters, Avery had shoved the one that had pinned him down off of himself.
With only a glance, Cerise could tell that he was livid. Whatever had been going on before she arrived must have really set him off.
'What astounding strength. I don't think that even an enhanced bahnen could do something like that.' Cerise thought as she watched Avery yank the head off of the monster he had been fighting.
Certainly, Cerise had already done some damage to its neck with an attack from her molecular wires, but the spine that she was unable to cut through, Avery had just broken into pieces with a raw feat of power.
Cerise had known that he was special from the first time the two of them had met. There were not many people that could hold their own against her in a fight after all.
Seeing him now, she knew that he had become even stronger than before. Idly, she wondered if she might lose if the two of them fought seriously.
Still, she did not have long to dwell on those thoughts, as she had three rampaging monsters to deal with, and Layton and Delia were obviously up to something.
"I'm going to stop them! Cerise, can you handle those things?!" Avery shouted, his eyes never leaving his two targets even when addressed Cerise.
She could tell just how pissed off he was, and she was worried that he might just kill Doctor Sarelett and Delia instead of capturing them alive.
A part of her told her to try and have Avery deal with remaining monsters instead, while she apprehend Delia and Layton.
Naturally, she had a lot of questions for the two of them, and they would not be able to talk if they ended up dead.
However, her gut told her to trust Avery. He would do what needed to be done.
And if both Delia and Doctor Sarelett ended up dead, it would certainly be better than letting them escape.
"Got it. I leave it to you. Just try not to get yourself caught up in more trouble. I'd hate to have to bail you out again."
"Don't worry. I know what tricks they have now. I won't be caught unaware again."
Cerise noticed something strange after Avery finished speaking.
It took her a few moments to realize what it was, but the constant mechanical whirling sound that was present in most places had ceased.
The climate control and any other systems that worked in the background of the warehouse had been suddenly shutoff.
In fact, the only thing still working from what Cerise could tell were the lights.
After that, she saw Avery throw himself at the shield protecting Delia and Doctor Sarelett.
While the man still seemed confident in his victory, Delia looked far more conflicted.
Soon, she was running towards and exit at the other end of the building. It seemed that she had decided that this was a lost cause and was trying to escape.
"Damn it! Why isn't anything working?!" Layton Sarelett suddenly shouted.
He was slamming his index finger against the button of a remote in his hand, but nothing was happening.
Cerise figured that this was due to whatever Avery had done to kill every device in the area other than the overhead lights.
Soon, Doctor Sarelett came to the same conclusion as Delia and hastily tried to retreat.
Yet, before he got far, Avery finally forced his way through the shield.
It was shocking to see a single man punch his way through a forcefield, but if there was anyone capable of such a feat, it was Avery Asteria.
Swiftly, he caught up to Layton and knocked the man onto the ground with a brutal kick in the back.
Then with one hand, he pulled the amoral scientist off of the floor and lifted him up by the throat.
Cerise kept one eye on what was going on while she busied herself with finishing off the monsters that had been attacking her.
Even from a side view, she could see the intense fury in Avery's eyes.
His hand was slowly tightening its grip around Doctor Sarelett, and it seemed that Avery was going to strangle the man to death.
