Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 593 - 593 Expected Offer (2)Avery could tell that from the way that Brunhilda was looking at him, she was trying to give him advice like a good-natured and more experienced aunt.
She had been a mercenary for decades and knew what she was talking about.
Nevertheless, he saw no reason to agree with her "reality check".
Becoming a seven star mercenary might not have been easy, but Avery knew that he could do it.
He was about to become the second quickest mercenary to go from starting out at the bottom to a six star.
Not only that, he was also going to be receiving another award for his work that would see his Silver Cross of Heroism upgraded to Gold or possibly Platinum.
Avery knew that this would increase his prestige within the Mercenary Association and through the Dramid Alliance as a whole.
This did with some potential problems if he ever found himself in other states, especially ones that were hostile like the Zatis Consortium. But he did care about his home despite its faults, and he figured that there was more than enough space to explore within the Dramid Alliance and unclaimed border territories to keep him excited. At least for a long time.
'I've also become some sort of superhuman with psionic abilities. Even if it takes several years or even decades, I feel like I can reach the top rank as a mercenary.' Avery thought, finding that there was not a doubt in his mind.
Brunhilda might have failed to become a seven star mercenary, but that was partly because she accepted that she would be unable to claim the top spot among the Kaizer Fleet.
She had become comfortable where she was, and instead of continuing to chase her ambitions, she had shifted them over to her son.
'I almost want to tell her that she might be able to become a seven star if she left the Kaizer Fleet, but I can already tell that would not end well. There's no point in making her more upset than necessary.'
Avery just shook his head and made it absolutely clear that he had no intention of accepting Brunhilda's proposal.
He would not mind keeping a close relationship with her and occasionally working together, but he would not ever become someone's subordinate. That simply was not something he was willing to accept.
"I was hoping that I would be able to convince you. It doesn't seem that that is going to be possible though." Brunhilda said with a defeated huff as she leaned back in her seat.
"Liesel, what about you? You've remained quiet until now. Wouldn't you rather be with your family? I get that you're young and want to try and make it on your own and rebel a little, but the best place for you is here."
After failing to get through to Avery, it was obvious that Brunhilda was trying to pivot and go through Liesel instead.
Likely she was hoping her niece would speak up and try to sway Avery.
"I do sometimes miss my mother and father, and you as well Aunt Brunhilda. But while I was out on my own, truly experiencing what it meant to be a mercenary for the first time, I realized that I wanted something different than what you or my parents wanted of me. I think that I've found what I want with Avery."
"I didn't go with him on a whim. He's a great man and I believe that we'll do great things together. If he says that his goal is to reach the top ranks as a seven star mercenary, then I'm going to do everything that I can to help him along the way." Liesel said, not flinching under the almost commanding gaze of her aunt.
There might have been a time when she would follow her aunt's every order, but that was in the past. Liesel knew that she could make her own choices now and that there was nothing her aunt could do about it.
Brunhilda frowned, but she did not try and push either of them any further.
She had enough experience to know when she was in a losing argument.
Nothing she could say would convince Avery or Liesel to abandon their current course and come to her side as part of the Kaizer Fleet. And she was not willing to do anything drastic to try and change their minds.
"That's regrettable. I understand though. There were moments that I thought about separating from the family as well to do my own thing. You found your own path Liesel, and I respect it. I said some things to Alderbert that I'm not proud of when I first found out that you had joined up with some other mercenary company. Your father made me realize how out of line I was. You don't owe us anything. Go out and do your best. Though, do know that your family will always be here if you want to come back."
Avery had kind of been expecting Liesel's aunt to push a bit harder to recruit them. He knew that she was aiming to do so from what he had heard from Liesel's father. It would have given her a substantial boost in her position within the Kaizer Family and put her son as the frontrunner to become the next head of the fleet.
Yet, she appeared to have decided to give up fairly easily. They had made their refusal clear, and she respected it.
For several more minutes they engaged in surprisingly pleasant conversation. Liesel's aunt did not show any signs of having hard feelings.
However, just as Avery thought that things were going to end smoothly, the door to the office opened and a towering man walked in.
From the descriptions that he had heard from Liesel, Avery immediately knew that this was her cousin, and Brunhilda's son. And judging from the sneer on his face, he was not going to be as cordial as his mother.
