Park introduced Quinn to the people who didn’t know her, because anybody working around him regularly was going to see her enough that beautiful woman silently following Nathaniel everywhere probably needed an actual identity. "Quinn. My assistant."

"And principal security," Quinn added.

Park glanced at her. "You always ruin the mysterious part."

"You generate enough mystery on your own."

Viktoria laughed softly as she moved toward the long table. Park turned immediately.

"There. That."

She frowned. "What?"

"You should laugh more."

Her expression became suspicious. "Why?"

"Because you’re extremely cute when you do."

Viktoria stared at him.

Park stared back.

The lead producer muttered, "Jesus," beneath her breath.

Sloane pulled out a chair. "Nathaniel."

"What?"

"We’ve been here 4 minutes."

Viktoria shook her head and sat down. "Can we begin your music career before you sexually harass the entire department?"

Park took the seat across from her. "That wording feels legally dangerous with my lawyer not present."

"You started it."

"I complimented management."

"Repeatedly."

"Hey, it’s employee morale."

Even Viktoria couldn’t fully stop the smile that time, and Park felt absurdly pleased with himself.

Then the actual work began.

NX wanted to start building Park’s music career immediately instead of waiting around for acting to move first. Nothing interesting had appeared on that side over the last couple of weeks, which wasn’t unusual. Productions had their own schedules, casting windows and irritating human tendency to refuse organizing themselves around Nathaniel Park’s impatience. NX could wait for the right acting opportunity without letting Park sit at home growing prettier and more expensive for no productive reason.

"We want to use the opening while you have it," Viktoria explained. "Once acting starts moving, your schedule becomes harder. Recording, meetings, rehearsals, fittings, shoots, publicity. So while you’re available, we want as much strong material from you as we can reasonably develop."

Park leaned back in his chair. "You’re preparing for me to become star!"

"No, we’re preparing for you to become busy... it does not means the same thing."

"Please don’t ruin this for me."

The lead producer picked up from there.

They would begin with Park’s original material, hear what he had brought, choose something worth developing and get him recording. If the day moved well, they had finished instrumentals afterward that Park could write over or play with, plus other production work they wanted to see him handle. None of those later tracks had artists attached yet. For the moment, NX simply wanted to put music in front of Park and discover how good finished music from such a talent it turned out to be.

That last part sounded fun.

Sloane, who had stayed quiet through most of the explanation, asked the more important career question. "Are you choosing his debut from today’s music too?"

"Possibly," Viktoria said. "But we’re not forcing it. We record first, see what we actually have, then decide what introduces Nathaniel properly. If something makes that decision obvious today, wonderful."

Park looked at her. "So basically no pressure."

"None."

The lead producer slowly lowered her tablet: "Should we leave you two alone?"

"No," Viktoria said immediately.

Park considered it. "Depends how long."

"Your songs, Nathaniel."

Right, career.

Park opened the folder he’d brought. NX had asked for 1 or 2 originals but he’d brought 5.

Viktoria noticed first. "You were asked for two."

"I suffered choosing."

The songs were If You Stay, Beautiful Morning, Halfway to Heaven, Reckless Love and Pretty Little Disaster. There was no point performing all 5 from beginning to end since this wasn’t another audition, so Park gave them enough of each song to understand what lived inside it, moving from the opening into the strongest section or hook whenever necessary.

If You Stay was softer and intimate and built around somebody insisting they could survive being left while every word betrayed the lie. Park barely pushed his voice at all. He didn’t need to but the closeness did the work, and when he stopped, the recording engineer glanced at the vocal producer as though quietly confirming, "Yes, apparently this bullshit is still real."

Beautiful Morning went warmer and something a person could hear with sunlight coming through curtains without immediately considering texting an ex or driving into the sea. Viktoria visibly relaxed during that one, which Park considered useful intelligence.

If he ever needed favorable contract amendments, perhaps acoustic sunshine was the way.

Halfway to Heaven climbed more, opening into something wider and emotional while stopping short of becoming the sort of screaming power ballad singers used to threaten glassware. The composer scribbled something down while Park sang, and by the end the lead producer had stopped pretending she wasn’t evaluating every breath.

Park gave them Reckless Love which changed the room.

He only sang part of it, yet the vocal producer’s pen stopped halfway through a line and remained there. The composer leaned forward, even the assistant engineer, who had spent most of the morning dealing with technical setup and therefore had every excuse to be immune to artistic drama, turned completely toward him.

He finished the hook and let the last bit of melody disappear.

Nobody immediately spoke.

Park looked around. "Did everyone die?"

The recording engineer pointed toward him without taking his eyes from the screen. "Don’t ruin it."

The lead producer gestured. "Last song."

Park began Pretty Little Disaster.

That one had always been different.

It was young, catchy and romantic in the irresponsible way that suited him far too well, a song for 2 people perfectly aware they might eventually require lawyers and choosing to kiss first and read the terms later. There was swagger in it, but bitter sweetness too. Enough humor in the phrasing to keep it young, enough sincerity underneath that it didn’t become another empty song about being attractive and emotionally unavailable.

Park hadn’t exactly lacked inspiration; it was a song he did with Emmeline naked in his chest.

By the time he reached the beginning of the chorus, everyone was listening differently; the composer sat forward with his elbows on his knees. Viktoria watched Park with those ash-brown eyes fixed entirely on him, lips slightly parted now instead of puckered, and Park had the profoundly mature thought that his song was currently doing excellent work on behalf of men everywhere.

He finished.

The lead producer looked at Viktoria.

Park waited several seconds before spreading his hands. "This feels like a medical panel deciding whether to remove an organ."

The lead producer tapped her pen once against the table. "Pretty Little Disaster. We start there."

Park’s smile came immediately. "That fast?"

"It’s the first recording."

"But not necessarily your debut song," Viktoria added.

The lead producer stood before either one of them could make the workplace more legally adventurous. "You can enter the booth now."

Park’s gaze drifted toward the title the lead producer had opened on the main screen.

PRETTY LITTLE DISASTER

He nearly laughed... Emmeline was going to love this.

She had been obsessed with the song, Reckless Love and most of Pretty Little Disaster had been written while she lay naked in his arms, soft and warm against him, usually after the 2 of them had exhausted enough to briefly become peaceful human beings again.

Apparently having a naked woman curled against his chest was excellent for songwriting.

’Who knew?’

Music schools should try it.

It also explained why both songs had ended up sounding like romance written by somebody who understood affection perfectly well but considered restraint a personal insult.
