And Park immediately understood why MJ had been willing to pull him away privately and gamble her dignity asking for help.

CJ could sing.

Really sing.

The first line carried some caution because she was reading a melody she had heard exactly once, but the voice underneath that caution was gorgeous, clean and feminine, with a natural upper register that already wanted to stretch far beyond what this song demanded.

More importantly, she listened.

Park softened his next line instinctively to give hers space.

CJ heard it and adjusted her own delivery without being told.

Park’s interest sharpened.

’Good... very fucking good.’

They moved toward the first shared section, and when their voices finally crossed, something clicked so naturally that MJ’s expression changed.

Park’s deeper soothing tone sat beneath CJ’s lighter voice without swallowing it. CJ rose over him while he held the emotional weight below, and for several bars the melodies stayed independent, moving around one another until they finally folded together in the chorus.

That was when MJ quietly sat down.

She had come here worried about her sister’s career.

Somewhere along the way, she forgot to worry.

The song was about unattainablelove, two people close enough to understand exactly what they could have been while knowing they would never actually have it. Park’s Peerless Male Siren carried the song’s emotional shape straight into the room, and Mourner’s Tongue made his side of the performance feel so painfully sincere that MJ found herself remembering things that had nothing to do with him:

’Old feelings... old almosts.’

People who had mattered at the wrong time.

CJ felt it too, except she was standing inside the song with him.

Every time Park looked toward her while singing his part, she had to remind herself that he was performing. His eyes looked genuinely hurt while his expression carried a tenderness so private that for one stupid second CJ wondered whether he was actually singing to her, and then common sense returned and told her they had met approximately five minutes ago.

Cursed Attractive Presence did absolutely nothing to make that distinction easier.

Her pulse had already become annoyingly noticeable before they reached the final shared section.

Then Park climbed and CJ almost missed her own harmony again.

His voice rose into a register she had not expected him to touch so easily, clean and effortless, the note opening above hers instead of fighting it, and CJ felt actual goosebumps rise along her arms.

She joined him and their voices met perfectly.

For the final few seconds, MJ forgot Park was an unsigned nineteen-year-old sitting on the edge of NX Arc’s career machine. CJ forgot she was supposed to be evaluating whether this stranger could help her. There was only the song, the two voices, and that ugly beautiful ache of wanting something already lost.

When the final note faded, the room stayed quiet.

MJ realized there were tears on her face only after one reached her jaw, she wiped beneath her eye and looked faintly offended by the betrayal.

CJ’s eyes had gone glossy too, though she had managed to keep her voice steady the entire way through. She stared at the notebook in her hands for several seconds before breathing out.

"That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever sung."

Then she looked at Park.

There that hunger in her and Park knew it instantly because he had worn that same expression before. Artists became greedy around good work.

Give them something beautiful and they immediately wanted to know what else you were hiding.

CJ’s earlier reserve was gone. She was still proud, still composed, but now her eyes kept dropping toward the notebook with open curiosity.

Park smiled.

’There you are.’

He took the notebook from her and flipped several pages until he reached the song written solely for a female voice.

MJ had not lied; CJ was talented enough that Park was willing to put something much nastier in front of her.

"Try this one."

CJ took the notebook almost too quickly.

MJ noticed, her lips twitched.

CJ ignored her sister and started reading.

The song was slower than the duet but technically far more vicious, written high and airy at first before climbing through increasingly difficult phrases until the final section demanded the sort of breath control and upper-range stability that could expose a mediocre singer inside thirty seconds.

CJ hummed the opening softly.

Park listened, she reached the next section and her brows lifted, then another and her eyes widened... by the time she reached the chorus, she looked up at Park with an expression halfway between disbelief and accusation.

"Who writes a breakup song around a sky?"

Park smiled. "Apparently me."

CJ looked back down at the center of the chorus.

{...If the sky could keep what I couldn’t hold,

I’d send your name where the blues turns cold...}

Her eyes stayed on the page.

The song did not just use the sky as decoration; the whole thing revolved around distance, clouds moving while somebody remained behind, blue becoming emptiness, something once beautiful turning unbearably large after the person you loved was no longer beneath it with you.

CJ slowly shook her head.

"This is ridiculous."

"Good ridiculous?"

She looked at him. "You know exactly what I mean."

Park grinned. "Can you sing it?"

That question changed her immediately, pride came alive in her eyes.

"Yes."

"Good. I’ll give you two tries."

CJ frowned. "Two?"

"Two. If you can give me what I want by the second one, the song is yours."

For a moment, neither sister spoke...

...CJ actually looked down at the notebook again as though making sure she had understood which song he meant.

"You’re kidding, right..."

"No."

"You’d give me this?"

"No, only if you can sing it properly."

CJ stared at him.

Park did not soften the offer or add anything about helping her because of MJ, neither did he treat her like a singer whose career needed saving; it did not.

He simply stood there with that unfair face, those impossible eyes, and the quiet certainty like he knew exactly what his work was worth.

That made all the difference, CJ’s pride had nothing to fight; this was not charity but a challenge.

A composer had placed a difficult song in front of a singer and told her to earn it.

CJ understood that language perfectly.

"Two tries," she repeated.

Park nodded. "Two."

"And if I get it right?"

"It’s yours."

"Deal."

The word came out instantly.

Park smiled.

’Perfect.’

MJ looked between them and almost laughed, she knew her sister, CJ could be stubborn enough to reject help simply because the person offering it had made her feel pitied, yet Park had somehow walked around that pride without ever appearing to manipulate her.

And the worst part was that CJ was now looking at him differently.

Not merely because of his face anymore.

’That is already bad enough.’

Now she knew what he could do.

The handsome rookie people had been whispering about was suddenly also the owner of the most beautiful male voice she had ever heard, a songwriter carrying songs in a notebook good enough to make her forget herself after one reading, and someone confident enough to hand one away if she could prove she deserved it.

CJ’s earlier little blush had become considerably harder to dismiss.

Park tapped the notebook lightly. "And if we have enough time afterward, I want to try writing something together."

CJ’s head came up so quickly her dark hair shifted over her shoulder.

"Together?"

"Why not? Now I know your voice. You know mine. We already know how they work together, so instead of guessing what somebody else might sound like, we could build something around what we actually have."

That somehow hit her harder than being offered the song.

CJ’s eyes brightened, then immediately grew suspiciously wet again.

Park almost laughed.

’Artists we’re really ridiculous creatures.’

Offer them money and they started negotiating percentages but offer them the chance to make something beautiful and suddenly everybody was emotional.

"Yes," CJ said, nodding quickly. "Absolutely."

MJ smiled from where she sat, looking from her sister to Park and feeling that strange little excitement people only felt when they realized something important might have begun in a room nobody else knew to watch.

Park laughed softly. "Then survive the two tries first."

CJ lowered her eyes to the notebook again, already reading through the difficult song with the concentration of someone handling a treasure she had not technically won yet.

Park watched her for a moment.

Beautiful.

Talented.

Already hooked on his music.

And apparently, according to the System, his lifelong singer if he played this correctly.

His gaze drifted toward the glowing imaginary numbers only he could see in his future, and one deeply unromantic thought slipped happily through the middle of all that artistic magic.

’Ten percent gross.’

God bless art.
