Evelyn’s facial expression shifted slightly as she saw Avery hugging Lucien.
’I didnt know they were close?’ She muttered to herself silently while staring at her husband for an explanation.
He couldn’t just vanish with her daughter for more than half-a-day and return like everything was fine.
For a vague instant, Avery almost harbored suspicion in her heart that there was something going on between them but she trusted the man she was in love with.
Lucien wasn’t one to go around sleeping with anyone he saw.
And she believed her daughter respected their boundaries.
She guessed that they likely went out on a bonding session and got stuck somewhere.
A worried look appeared on Evelyn’s face at the thought, the crease between her brows deepening as she imagined them stranded, phones dying, night stretching on.
Finally, Avery separated from the hug and glanced at me with a pair of shaky eyes.
Soon, she smoothed her expression and returned to her previous cold indifference as she distanced herself away from me.
She acted as though everything was completely normal.
However I could tell... she was worried about me?
I chuckled at the thought, then glanced at my wife.
Meanwhile, Avery glanced at her sister and her brows furrowed into a frown.
I walked over to Evelyn and hugged her warmly.
Evelyn leaned into my arms, inhaling my scent shakily, her fingers tightening for a second against my back as if confirming I was solid and here.
"I missed you, Lucien. You dont know how worried I was about you. Both of you."
"I understand." I replied while still hugging her.
"It was late when the car broke down and we were unable to get a taxi. All the ones online kept canceling the ride after seeing our location."
Hearing my explanation Evelyn’s worry slowly smoothened out, but her frown was still visible on her face.
We slowly withdrew from the hug and she ran her hand through my arms with an affectionate look in her eyes, lingering on the warmth of my skin as if she needed that last proof.
"Next time at least give me a call, rather than informing me that you would be delayed."
"I didnt want to stress you." I replied smoothly.
Although I felt bad lying to my wife like this I had no choice.
Well... technically I do... but you get the point.
Seeing that Evelyn wanted to protest some more, I placed a hand over her lips.
"It’s alright... I get it. I’ll inform you next time." I said with a smile.
Evelyn chuckled against my finger and I noticed her expression return to calmness once more.
She turned to the side and noticed her daughters staring at their interaction... intently?
Jane’s eyes were tight and for a moment Evelyn felt as though she saw a glimpse of jealousy in both girls’ eyes.
She quickly waved the thought off, thinking that both girls likely weren’t fully accommodated to her being intimate with a man around them.
"Let’s head inside. I prepared breakfast..." Evelyn said with a smile as she led me inside, leaving the two girls together.
"Also... I took a day’s leave from work today." Evelyn added with a smile.
Hearing her words, although I was a little puzzled, I still nodded and followed her in.
...
Left alone for a moment were the two girls.
Jane only lingered for barely a few seconds before following her dad in.
Just as she was about to walk a few steps, her elder sister, Avery pulled her back and stared at her with a suspicious look in her eyes.
"Jane?" Avery called out sternly, looking directly into Jane’s eyes for any change in her facial expression.
"What did you and dad do together?"
Jane swallowed, hearing the question but she quickly thought of a lie and smoothly replied before Avery could get any more suspicious.
"We... uh... we went to the arcade... we lost track of time playing games together." Jane slowly smiled to hide her nervousness under her sister’s intense stare.
"Is that so?" Avery raised a brow.
"So why do you scent so much like him?"
Hearing her words, Avery noticed that Jane’s pupils shrank for a moment before returning back to normal.
’Interesting...’ She muttered internally, curious about what exactly transpired between Jane and her dad.
"I dont know what you’re talking about!" Jane replied quickly.
Understanding that lingering any longer would only reveal more suspicions about her and her dad, she shrugged her sister’s hand off hers and rushed inside before Avery could say another word.
’It seems my little sister is hiding something...’ Avery muttered to herself.
She lingered for a few seconds, silently lost in thought.
She wondered if her dad similarly engaged in intimate acts with her sister.
At the same time, she didnt know what to think of it. Or how to feel about it.
She wasn’t sad or angry, or disappointed...
She just didnt know the words to describe the emotion.
...
Inside, Jane rushed to her room but her steps paused briefly when she noticed I and Evelyn chatting and chuckling while eating happily.
Her eyes flashed briefly in jealousy before she quickened her steps towards her room.
Avery entered two minutes later.
Her expression seemed calm as usual but I could tell that she was hiding a lot of thought beneath her gaze.
She hadn’t yet confronted me about what happened between us the other day.
I glanced at her for a moment, before returning my attention to my wife.
"Mom? You’re not going to work today are you?" Avery asked curiously, pausing to glance at her mom on her way to her room.
"No, I’m not. Why?" Evelyn replied.
"Nothing. Just curious." Avery smiled and entered into her room.
Evelyn shook her head slowly.
"I dont know what’s wrong with my daughters today. They are acting far different from normal."
"I’m sure they’ll come around." I replied with a smile.
Just then my phone pinged and I glanced down at it.
It was a notification from an unknown number.
It read: "dad? I think I might have gotten into a little bit of trouble. Please I need your help."
"Hmmm? Dad?’
I was startled for a moment before I quickly realized it must be my youngest daughter.
’Trouble?’ I showed my wife the message and informed her about the fact that I might have to leave briefly.
"But you just got back home." Evelyn frowned almost immediately, disagreeing completely.
"I did. But our daughter needs my help. She has your number too but she decided to inform you. It’s clear she feels I can handle this better." I smiled and gently rubbed Evelyn’s fingers.
"Don’t worry, I’ll be back before you know it."
"Fine..." Evelyn replied in a low tone.
She was really looking forward to spending time with her husband today.
