Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 281 - 220: The Royal Court’s Special AidZat squatted before the fireplace, adding firewood. With the cold weather leaving little in the way of entertainment and not enough people for a game of cards, he could only stare at the crackling logs and listlessly brew some tea.
Just as he refilled Baisitina’s cup with hot tea, the main door swung open, and a cold draft made him shiver. He was about to curse, but when he looked up, he caught himself and said instead, "Boss, is the banquet over?"
Levi, his stomach round from feasting at public expense, sank into a chair. With a look of pure contentment, he scooped up Buji as it flew over to him and nodded.
Baisitina immediately pouted. She had just managed to coax Buji into staying in her arms with various flavors of milk, but the moment the Lord arrived, the little thing completely forgot about her. It even presented the small milk bottles to the Lord one by one, CLINKING and CLANKING as if showing off its treasures.
’What an ungrateful little freeloader.’
"So, how did the meeting go?" Composing herself, Baisitina asked curiously.
She knew this banquet wasn’t just about eating and drinking.
"From now on, we won’t be dealing with the minor squabbles of the past. We still need to stay humble. After all, humility is the path to progress."
Levi had returned from the banquet having learned nothing, except how to speak in bureaucratic platitudes with ever-increasing skill.
Zat pursed his lips, turned his head, and went back to adding firewood.
"By the way, where’s Mier?"
Only then did Levi notice that while two Goat-man maids were massaging Baisitina’s shoulders and Zat was tending the fire, Mier was nowhere to be seen.
"Si Kai said he was taking him to see some ’fun things.’ They left right after you did," Baisitina explained, unhurriedly continuing to sew a wool scarf.
She always found something to do to pass the hours when she was idle. For her, knitting wasn’t just a way to kill time; she also felt a sense of accomplishment with every finished piece.
"I wanted to go, too, but they absolutely refused to take me."
Zat immediately seized the opportunity to complain, his tone aggrieved.
"A fledgling that has grown its wings will eventually take flight. Just let him go."
The Lord offered these platitudes, but inwardly, he wondered if a guy like Si Kai would lead Mier astray.
Before he’d seen the man drunk, Levi had actually believed the middle-aged Knight was a rare breed who truly abided by the creeds of justice, humility, and the like.
But as it turned out, the more stoic a person appears, the more of a wild side they have bottled up inside, just waiting for the right moment to be uncorked.
Mier returned late at night. The kid’s face was beet-red, and no matter what anyone asked, he just kept his lips tightly sealed and said nothing.
Si Kai, meanwhile, looked awkward and hastily excused himself.
Baisitina, thinking the boy was sick, felt his forehead and questioned him with concern, which only made Mier all the more embarrassed.
Only Levi knew the two had definitely been up to something they couldn’t speak of in polite company, and he watched the spectacle with a cheerful grin, enjoying the show.
Early the next morning, as the sun began to rise, the convoy from High Cliff Castle turned around and headed for home. Only a single figure went the opposite way, back toward Bailiu City.
Having come all this way to Bailiu City, it was out of the question for him not to go and catch up with his Feudal Lord, Liya.
Time had been tight before, so Levi hadn’t visited her first, saving it for the end of his trip.
Since he hadn’t sent a letter to announce his visit, he had to wait as was customary upon arriving at the Duke’s Castle.
He didn’t have to wait long, however, before a maid came to lead him deeper into the castle.
This was Levi’s second time entering the Duke’s Castle, but he still couldn’t hide his envy.
This castle, built in the rugged style of the Northern Lands, possessed a unique, ancient charm and was steeped in history. It was the kind of thing that could only be acquired over countless years—what one might call heritage.
Exquisite sculptures, elegant fountains, and distinctive gardens could be seen everywhere within the castle.
Levi followed the maid through a winding corridor and into a large hall.
A beautiful figure sat by the window. The sun was positioned just perfectly, outlining her silhouette in a brilliant and dazzling golden light.
She was like a golden canary trapped in a cage, a sight that couldn’t help but stir a pang of heartache.
"It’s been a while, Miss Liya. Have you been well?"
The maid withdrew, and the Lord waved at Liya.
"Good day, Levi." Liya turned and walked over, her face wreathed in smiles. "When I learned you’d come to see me, I felt as if the sun had suddenly broken through after ten straight days of snow."
"I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard your name recently."
Levi opened his arms to give her a light hug, then pulled back. "That’s only because certain people have been spreading my name around."
Today, Liya wore a long white dress embroidered with gold. The thick, form-fitting garment did nothing to hide her impressive figure; instead, it accentuated her captivating curves.
An exquisite pearl necklace added the perfect embellishment to her snow-white, swan-like neck.
If, back in Kolon, the Duke’s granddaughter had radiated the aura of a top-tier noble—one who could make others feel inadequate and aware of the vast class divide with a single glance—
then now, she was like a princess who had fallen to the house of an ordinary noble. She was still beautiful, but that untouchable air of high station was gone.
The last time Liya visited High Cliff Castle, Levi could sense her inner sorrow, even though she hadn’t shown it. This time, however, was much better. Her brow was no longer furrowed, and she was clearly in much higher spirits.
