Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 293 - 226: The Old Skinflint’s PurposeThe temperature rose noticeably after the Vanguard Army left the Northern Territory and officially entered the Debei Eastern Territory, but the wind and snow continued unabated.
For the Northern People, who were accustomed to the cold, it was nothing—completely within their range of tolerance.
However, after marching for half a month, even Counts Andao and Tess could barely conceal their exhaustion, to say nothing of the grunts under their command.
The only ones who didn’t seem to mind were the unnervingly energetic brutes from High Cliff Castle, who acted as if they were on a picnic.
Fatir, the Saintess of the Holy Light Church, had joined the High Cliff Castle contingent when they set out, and by now, she and the Lord were as thick as thieves.
After all, when one person is dead set on seducing the Lord into permanently joining the Holy Light Church, the relationship is bound to develop quickly.
"Am I really that unappealing?"
Fatir said from her seat in the carriage, her tone hollow as she looked at the Lord.
She had taken off her Bishop’s Hat but still wore her Gilded Half-Mask and Church Robe.
She was the Saintess of the Holy Light Church, adored by countless believers. People who yearned for her blessing were too numerous to count. Yet this particular Baron, no matter how she cajoled him, showed absolutely no inclination to permanently join the Holy Light Church.
"Her Highness Saintess, it’s not your fault. I’m just not interested in women," Levi replied casually, his eyes glued to the cards in his hand.
Traveling was dull, so it was inevitable that they’d find ways to pass the time. A card game had naturally formed.
"But I distinctly remember you saying you liked older women."
She rested her Magic Staff on her knees, facing Levi.
"Did I say that? I don’t seem to recall."
Levi grinned as he played his last card, winning the game. He stuck paper strips to Mier’s and Sam’s foreheads before looking up with a feigned expression of confusion.
"Never mind. I’m going to sleep."
Fatir dropped the subject and lay down, resting her head on the lap of Heather, the Zor Elf. "Just wake me when we get to the Mislin Land."
Heather looked awkwardly at the Saintess of the Holy Light Church resting on her lap, not daring to refuse.
As a Zor Priest, she could sense the vast Magic Power within the young woman, a power comparable to a High Priest of the Zor.
This meant the young woman was undoubtedly a High Tier Mage.
Besides, Levi had already told them that the young woman’s status was equal to his own, warning them to be careful not to displease her.
Fatir stared into the shadow before her, sighed, and sat up again. She looked out at the scenery rushing past. "On second thought, no."
"What’s wrong?" The Lord was baffled. ’Women are as fickle and mysterious as the ocean,’ he thought.
"I can only see half the sky," she said, her voice devoid of emotion.
Levi glanced at Heather. The Zor Elf was the very definition of "a slender branch bearing rich fruit"—her form-fitting clothes traced the perfect curves of her body.
Then he looked at Fatir’s chest, which was only slightly developed—not even as large as his own, Lord Li’s, pecs.
"HAHAHA! I never thought Her Highness Saintess would have this kind of insecurity."
To be fair, the Lord was a man of strict discipline and would never normally laugh at others, but he simply couldn’t contain himself in this situation.
As the Saintess of the Holy Light Church, she was, in the eyes of the world, a figure of holiness, grandeur, and divinity. But at this moment...
...to the Lord, she seemed no different from an ordinary girl. Except, perhaps, that her power was just a tiny bit higher than average.
To think she’d be anxious about her figure.
"Everyone, we have a situation up ahead!" Just then, Count Andao came galloping over on a black horse with antlers.
The scouting duties for the Vanguard Corps were handled by Count Andao and the Jackal Wolfman Cavalry from High Cliff Castle. The Count had volunteered for the responsibility, saying he had served as a scout in his youth.
That fellow Hog had once secretly told Levi that the Count’s cavalrymen were exceptionally skilled in both Martial Arts and Riding Skill, far surpassing the Mercenaries of the Wilderness. They were truly the elite soldiers of a Count.
After all that praise, Levi began to wonder if Count Andao was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He couldn’t help but ask just how much stronger the Count’s men were than his own.
But the fellow had nonchalantly replied that his Jackal Wolfman Cavalry would have no problem taking on two of them at once, but they’d need to fight to the death to have a chance against three.
This left the Lord speechless. He realized something: the more honest and earnest someone seemed, the wilder they were on the inside. They were just waiting for a chance to show it.
Since the army had entered the Eastern Territory, their journey had been almost unbelievably smooth. They hadn’t seen a single robber or bandit.
This was likely thanks to Fulina, who had written to the Duke of the Eastern Territory ahead of time. As long as they didn’t cause trouble for the local populace, they wouldn’t be obstructed.
"Old An, what’s the situation?"
Levi stretched, hopped down from the carriage, and landed perfectly astride the Three-headed Dog that had been trotting alongside.
While riding Biefeng was incredibly cool, his rear end couldn’t take it for such long periods. That’s why the Lord had ended up crowding into a carriage with Heather and the other Casters.
"In a clearing up ahead, there’s a Cavalry Team flying the banner of the Skinners. About one to two thousand of them."
"Skinners? Could they be soldiers from the Debei family?" Levi pulled a map from his coat and spread it across Biefeng’s three broad heads. He glanced at the map, then at his surroundings, and came to a decision. "We’ve already reached the Mislin Land. A few more days’ travel and we’ll be at the border of the Southern Territory."
