Pioneer Lord: I Have Conquering System
Chapter 310 - 233: Flood and Ferocious BeastsThese poor souls only knew that something big was happening. Otherwise, their lord, the Baron, would never have dispatched so many soldiers to garrison Kalia.
But they never expected an army to attack them, so they were utterly bewildered when the castle was breached. They immediately began to tremble, kneeling to surrender and praying that this band of soldiers from who-knows-where would spare their lives.
Levi had no interest in bullying a few unarmed commoners. He gave them some rations and told them to take their belongings, leave the castle, and find a new place to live.
Then, the Beastman Barbarians began to turn the castle upside down, searching for any spoils of war.
Soon, the Barbarians had moved everything they found to the castle’s great hall.
There were fine swords, portraits, and all sorts of other things piled high in an empty space in the hall.
One of the Barbarians carried over an exquisite wooden box, about the size of a man’s head, and placed it on the table.
A cold light flashed through the air. The iron lock, sliced cleanly in two, fell onto the table. Hog’s Curved Saber was already back in its sheath.
"Your Sword Technique is almost a third as good as mine!" Levi said, giving Hog a thumbs-up.
The Lord lifted the lid of the box and, a moment later, couldn’t help but exclaim, "Holy shit!"
Inside the box, the brilliant gleam of Gold Coins and various pieces of jewelry was so bright he could barely open his eyes.
The surrounding Beastman Barbarians, who were shoveling food from their bowls, thought he had discovered some precious treasure. They quickly wiped their mouths and craned their necks to get a look, hoping to see something amazing. But when they saw it was just some useless Gold Coins, they all went "Tch!" and squatted back down to devour their food.
To them, that stuff was less practical than the fist-sized chunks of meat in their bowls.
Having just survived a bloody battle, nothing made them happier than eating a hot, fragrant meal.
"You blockheads don’t know a thing," the Lord said smugly as he swept all the Gold Coins and jewelry into his inventory.
His System Space wasn’t infinite, but he still had a few slots left, which was more than enough to hold this much wealth.
He hadn’t expected this Baron Regulo to be so wealthy. There were about two thousand Gold Coins alone, and if he sold off the other antiques and valuables, he could probably get around Five Thousand Gold Coins in total.
This made the Lord, who had been barely scraping by, feel like he’d struck it rich overnight. He wished he could immediately run off to the Gonda Canary Garden, that notorious money pit, and experience the treatment of a true nobleman.
"Brother-in-law, look what this is!" Mier came running over, shouting as he held up a few books. "I found these in a bedroom, hidden in a secret compartment in a cabinet! If I hadn’t accidentally hit the switch, I never would have found them."
"Bloodline Combat Qi..." Levi took the books and looked through them one by one, but he quickly lost interest after a few pages. "It’s a Low Tier Combat Qi Secret Manual, probably the Durant Family’s heirloom Treasure Manual. It’s no use to you, but we can take it back for the others at High Cliff Castle to cultivate."
He casually tossed it to Mier and picked up the next one. "Ah Bin..."
"AHEM, this thing is too wicked. It will certainly lead a young man down an evil path."
"Brother-in-law, so... should we take it?" Mier asked, blinking his eyes in curiosity.
Levi put on an expression of profound compassion and said, "The contents of this book are like a plague. I will destroy it myself, lest it harm the youth of the Kingdom!"
Then he immediately rolled it up and stuffed it into his clothes.
This Knightly Novel was split into two volumes. After Levi had finished the first volume—purely for educational purposes, of course—he had been very interested in the rest of the story.
But as a Lord, he couldn’t bring himself to lose face by asking Lorina to buy this kind of Knightly Novel for him.
He never expected to find the second volume here. This Baron Regulo was a true godsend!
"..." Mier was speechless as he watched his brother-in-law say one thing and do the complete opposite.
"Have the prisoners been handed over to Count Andao yet?"
Having finally accomplished something he’d been longing to do, the Lord’s good mood was plain to see, and he began asking about minor matters.
High Cliff Castle had no interest in these soldiers; they would just be a waste of rations. So, as a simple favor, he handed them over to Andao.
"Yes, we’ve already handed all the prisoners over to them," Leiden nodded. The Giant Goblin was leaning over a table, scribbling with a quill. As High Cliff Castle’s Military Officer, he also served as the Affairs Officer and was currently recording the spoils of war and the consumption of logistical supplies.
"Lord, the food we’ve seized here is enough to support all our military activities in the Southern Territory, with some to spare."
He even exclaimed in amazement, "This is an incredible amount of food. It’s hard to imagine a small town like this possessing so much."
"It’s to be expected. This Baron’s fief has at least a hundred thousand commoners under its purview. Just by raising taxes ten percent, he could collect an unimaginable amount of wealth." Levi wasn’t surprised at first, but after glancing at the documents, he too was taken aback. "This much? It looks like this Baron treated the commoners under him as nothing more than livestock."
In truth, the output and income of a fief weren’t difficult to estimate.
Especially for a barony that wasn’t very large. When Levi saw the numbers on paper, he almost thought Baron Regulo was a Count.
The taxes he collected must have been unimaginably high. The peasants of Kalia probably paid their taxes and still ended up in debt to that bastard.
Even stringing him up from a lamppost wouldn’t be enough to atone for his sins.
However, that just seemed to be the reality of this world; the so-called commoners were, in fact, nothing more than the slaves of the nobility.
Although the laws of the Debei Kingdom strictly forbade nobles from killing commoners, how many actually abided by them?
Even Knights, who lived by a creed of eight great virtues, still had their own manors and servants.
All one could say was that in this world, if you weren’t a noble, you were worse than a beast of burden.
As the sun fell, the horizon burned like fire. Within Kalia Town, the troops of the Northern Army had divided up their assigned quarters and begun to light fires for their evening meal, sending plumes of smoke curling into the air.
Thanks to King Debei’s strict prohibition against harming civilians in this war, combined with Count Andao’s intervention, the soldiers ultimately did not storm the residential areas and commit a series of inhuman atrocities.
However, the livestock in the pens met a sorry fate, as soldiers herded the chickens, ducks, cattle, and sheep into an open area and began to slaughter them.
If they couldn’t satisfy their other desires, they would at least satisfy their hunger. Most of the long march had been spent gnawing on dry rations, and their taste buds were all but dead. To have a cup of hot, fresh meat broth for free in this cold season was an indescribable comfort, enough to soothe their empty souls.
Meanwhile, in the residential area of Kalia Town, Fatir, dressed in a simple Magic Robe, was administering Treatment.
But the ones she was treating were not wounded soldiers, but commoners.
"I didn’t realize you had such a charitable heart," the Lord said, walking out from the shadows with his hands in his pockets.
A group of sallow-faced, emaciated commoners immediately looked with fear at the young man, who was clearly with the soldiers.
Levi sized up the commoners. Most were gaunt, with hollow cheeks, clearly struggling to survive. Their padded cotton clothes were covered in countless patches.
Many of them were just unlucky souls who had been injured in the battle. Without effective Treatment, they would soon die in some forgotten corner.
A few of the little kids had cheeks flushed red from the cold and hands covered in frostbite.
"Levi, I came from a peasant family once, too," Fatir said, stroking a little girl’s dirty hair. "If the Lord Bishop hadn’t taken me back to the Church Court, my situation would be no different from theirs." With a surge of Magic Power, the girl’s chapped little hands were quickly healed.
Levi wanted to pat the girl’s head as well, but she immediately hid behind Fatir the Saintess with a frightened look on her face, so he had to give up the idea.
’That little Buji is so much more likable,’ he sighed internally. But war was a tough business, and the Lord couldn’t bear to bring the little thing along to suffer. It had taken a great deal of coaxing to leave Buji behind at High Cliff Castle in Tina’s care.
"How many people can you really save by doing this?" Levi wasn’t like the other nobles who saw these commoners as mere livestock; he was simply stating a fact.
"I don’t know how many people I can save. I only know that if I do nothing, I won’t be able to save a single one."
Fatir chanted for a moment, and a sacred light enveloped the commoners.
