One had to admit, these Northern People were truly valiant. Despite taking one hit after another, they continued roaring as they scaled the walls.

With covering fire from the Ice and Snow Mages, who had recovered their Magic Power, the Southern Soldiers on the walls were subjected to a furious barrage. This created a brief opening in the defense, allowing some Northern Soldiers to reach the top of the wall and immediately clash with the defenders.

Unfortunately, their numbers were far too few. Against the regrouped Spearmen on the walls and the Archers in the towers, they were quickly and utterly eliminated.

Even from such a great distance, the sounds of battle and screams were still clearly audible.

Levi shook his head. ’Even though the Northern Army has the advantage in Caster numbers, the most they can do is suppress the defenders on the walls. The moment their Magic Power runs out, the enemy will just regroup.’

’To be honest, if the first wave of soldiers were replaced with the Panda Warrior Corps or the Holy Knight Order, just a few of them reaching the top of the wall would be enough to hold out until reinforcements arrived.’

’Unfortunately, the initial defense is always the most ferocious. The besiegers always face the most intense bombardment.’

’It wasn’t cold-bloodedness, but a necessary trade-off. If lives must be lost, then preserving the most elite warriors is the obvious choice.’

The country bumpkins from High Cliff Castle watched in stunned amazement. They had never witnessed such a grand spectacle.

Dazzling Magic was being flung at the enemy walls as if it were free, all to suppress the enemy’s Guard Army and buy the attacking soldiers some breathing room.

Dense throngs of soldiers swarmed up the Cloud Ladders like countless ants. No matter how many fell, their places were immediately taken by those behind them.

A troop of several hundred fully armored Samurai had set out. They stood over three ren tall, even a bit larger than the Beastman Barbarians.

The average Southern Person stands about 1.8 ren tall. Even the tallest of the Northern People from Debei are only about two ren.

It was hard to imagine these three-ren-tall beings were human.

Levi, however, already knew that these were the Northern Old People. They lived in some ancient mountain ranges and had been tricked by Fulina—through some unknown means—into becoming Warriors.

These large men marched in lockstep, pushing an enormous Siege Vehicle.

They chanted an unknown, ancient song in unison. Their voices were sonorous, the melody vast and desolate, filled with an ineffable, ancient air. Even from thousands of paces away, the song overpowered the thunderous battle cries, echoing in all directions.

"That is a war chant called the ’Oath of the End.’ These Northern Old People are descendants of the Giants. Legend has it that this was the song the Giants sang when they broke their treaty with the Behemoths and went to war. It’s said to bring the singer Power and good fortune!"

Leiden, the Giant Goblin, listened intently as he continued to explain to the uneducated crowd, "The Giants are said to be the firstborn of the Titans, so this war chant is sung mostly in the Titan Language."

"However, these Old People have clearly forgotten much of the original. Some parts have been translated from the Titan Language into the common tongue."

Levi gave the erudite Giant Goblin a thumbs-up.

’When he had first taken in the Giant Goblin, Leiden had just been a backwoods brute from the Wilderness with some minor military knowledge.’

’But after absorbing all kinds of knowledge about Debei like a sponge, he was now practically half a Debei Tong.’

The soldiers of Black Stone Castle tried to stop the approaching colossus. However, with their Casters—the only ones who could reliably destroy the Siege Vehicle—so thoroughly suppressed they didn’t dare show their faces, the soldiers were powerless against the massive machine.

Several hundred of the Northern Old People, each with a trace of Giant Bloodline, gripped the handles of the massive Siege Hammer. They roared in unison, muscles bulging as they unleashed the immense strength in their bodies, swinging the ram far back.

After it reached the apex of its arc, they used the momentum to heave it forward.

A massive CLANG! rang out, as crisp as the sound of a blacksmith’s hammer.

The sound made the Lord instinctively clean out his ears. ’It reminds me of my own time spent folding steel. The two sounds aren’t just similar—they’re identical.’

’Still, I have to admit, these big guys are incredibly strong.’

’The cylindrical Siege Hammer was forged from hardwood and metal, so thick it would take three men to wrap their arms around it. There’s no doubt it’s incredibly heavy.’

’If this were Kalia Town, a single blow like that would have probably shattered the walls to pieces.’

Unfortunately, the gates of Black Stone Castle were no simple construct. A blow like that only managed to shake off a bit of dust.

This inevitably made Levi think of Gonda, the central city of Debei. Its walls were rumored to be forty-eight ren high, and its eighteen-ren-tall gates were forged entirely from Palladium Steel. Even after a full day and night of magical bombardment, they wouldn’t show a single scratch. It was known as the City That Never Falls.

Since the walls were built, they had never been breached; any fall had come from within.

’After this war is over, I really do need to make a trip to Gonda. It would be the perfect opportunity to see it for myself.’

...

Inside Black Stone Castle, within an unremarkable underground dungeon, one messenger after another hurried in and out.

To prevent the enemy from using catapults to bombard the castle’s interior, this underground dungeon was hosting this many noble officers for the very first time.

The furnishings inside were crude. The iron bars had been removed to create a larger area. Wool blankets were spread on the floor, and tables were set up in the less-than-spacious room.

Several nobles, led by Cross, were gathered around a conference table. In front of them were plates with knives and forks, holding medium-well steaks garnished with a small, red tomato.
