Well, I guess he’ll have to be more careful in his next life.
"That’s right. We took the opportunity to ambush his army. I originally wanted to control his body, which would have definitely increased our chances of success, but his will was truly powerful. Since that didn’t work, I had no choice but to slowly devour his strong body as he cursed me, until I finished eating his delicious brain. Only then did the beautiful sounds end." The Knight licked his lips. Though he was clearly dead, his face twisted into a vivid, terrifying smile.
"As for that thin, rough tongue of his, it was devoured by this pack of Babu Demons. To be honest, it was so sweet that the wretched things beat each other bloody fighting over it."
"You son of a bitch Undead!" Zat was the first to curse. He gripped his Fine Steel War Axe and stood protectively beside his Lord, waiting only for the command to chop the creature into mince.
He had been on good terms with Count Andao, often visiting his camp for free food and drinks. Seeing him defeated and tormented like this, Zat was already burning with rage.
"You’re cautious, but you’re also stupid. Getting this close to us, you no longer have any chance of victory," the creature said with utter confidence.
’It seems the reports were right. This unknown Demon absorbs a portion of its victims’ memories, so its intelligence is on par with a human’s.’
"It seems you forgot to absorb the most important memory." The Lord sighed, calmly taking his sword in hand.
"What?" The Knight was even more confused.
"You’re the one who’s too close to me."
The words had barely faded when a silver light flashed. Before anyone could react, a head tumbled to the ground.
"Someone watch this damn thing for your Lord! The rest of you, grab your weapons and follow me!"
Unfortunately, as soon as Levi finished speaking, the unknown spider-like Demon on the corpse’s head instantly lost its color and became a lifeless lump.
"Fuck! It’s that goddamn Magic again."
Having diligently supplemented his knowledge of Magic with Heather, the Lord could tell at a glance that it wasn’t a Demon itself controlling the body, but a type of psychic Magic.
The Babu Demons, who had been ordered to pose as soldiers, began a desperate charge toward the city gate.
A cacophony of howls, filled with bloodlust and greed, rose up. The Demons swarmed like malevolent spirits, surging across the plain toward Kolon like a tidal wave.
"Fall back to the gate!"
He still didn’t know the enemy’s full strength. Even though he considered High Cliff Castle’s forces to be world-class, the Lord had no intention of meeting them in a head-on clash.
The grating sound of countless bowstrings being drawn echoed out, followed by a volley of arrows. The front rank of crimson-skinned Babu Demons was instantly cut down like a field of wheat.
Back when the Feder Archers had been shooting up from below the walls, they had hardly missed a shot. Now, with the advantage of high ground, firing down on the enemy, they were even more deadly.
Bowstrings sang as the enemy’s numbers dwindled. Hot blood sprayed from their bodies, flowing and pooling on the ground to form small streams.
Levi calmly led the Barbarians back through the tunnel to the gate. As the heavy doors closed, one layer after another, the Demons were completely shut out just in the nick of time.
Despite a lifetime of fighting, this was the first time the Lord and the soldiers of High Cliff Castle had ever fought a defensive siege.
The Demons were like ants pouring from the earth, covering the plain in a dense swarm. Their charge was a chaotic mess—even a rural Militia was more organized—but they were undeniably frenzied.
The sheer visual impact of the endless tide of monsters charging with abandon was enough to make one’s heart pound.
However, the troops of High Cliff Castle felt completely at ease. The Barbarian Warriors were even leisurely pointing and making critiques.
The reason, of course... was that Kolon’s twenty-eight-blade-high city walls were finally showing their true worth.
The horde of Demons looked terrifying, but even the ones that made it to the base of the wall through the rain of arrows could only stare up helplessly at the towering structure, lacking any siege equipment.
Their original plan had been the old standard: trick the defenders into opening the gate. They just hadn’t expected the human commander here to be so abnormally cautious.
Even so, they might have been able to rush the gate before it closed, but the enemy Archers were terrifyingly precise, aiming every shot for their legs or eye sockets.
As a result, they could only watch helplessly as the gate was shut.
"It seems something must have happened at White Bone Fortress. The situation might be even more critical than they said." Earth Goblins Leiden, who had appeared on the wall at some point, looked down at the Demons with great concern.
He had clearly been woken up not long after falling asleep and had rushed over in a hurry; he was still wearing a pointed wool nightcap.
He was a light sleeper, and with High Cliff Castle’s camp being so close to the main gate, he knew something was wrong the moment he heard the sounds of battle. He had thrown on an old suit of Leather Armor and rushed right over.
"There are at least several castles between Kolon and White Bone Fortress. I’m wondering if these Demons circled around them, or if they’ve already fought their way this far." Levi’s face was calm and expressionless. It wasn’t that he wasn’t worried; as the commander, his every word and action affected the morale of his troops. Even if he was deeply concerned, he had to project an air of someone who could hold up the sky even if it were falling.
"If it’s the latter, we’re in real trouble. After all, if they could fight their way to Kolon without a single word of warning getting out, then that Griffin Knight Order heading south is completely useless!"
"Still, these Demons are much weaker than I expected," Leiden remarked, objectively assessing the creatures below.
The *Abyssal History Book* records a type of Demon called the Babu. They are described as cunning and cruel.
They stand about one-point-nine blades tall and weigh around one hundred and forty pounds, giving them an exceptionally gaunt appearance. Their strength, however, is no less than that of a grown man.
One-on-one, it would be difficult for an untrained adult to defeat one.
If all Demons were at this level, there would be nothing to fear. The truth, however, is that they are at the bottom of the demonic hierarchy, ranked only slightly above Timid Demons and Little Demons.
If they were facing an Eight-armed Snake Demon, or a Balrog Flame Demon lord, the outcome would be far less certain.
Soon, Monvert also rushed over. The Wolf Island soldiers he brought with him immediately joined the battle.
"Levi, what’s happening? I was on patrol when I heard the sounds of fighting from this direction." His expression was grim, and he was still wearing his Leather Armor.
"Here. See for yourself," Levi said, pointing down from the wall.
The Wolf Island Count was so shocked he was speechless. His mouth felt incredibly dry. "These Demons reached Kolon? How did we not receive a single word of warning?!"
What truly shocked him was that the entire line of communication, from Damon before to the Griffin Knight Order after, seemed to have vanished completely.
They were completely in the dark about the situation in the south, which was how these Demons could suddenly appear at Kolon’s gates.
The implications of that were enough to send a chill down one’s spine.
"I’d like to know that even more than you," Levi said. He targeted the densest part of the crowd below the wall, raised his hand, and hurled a defensive rolling log.
It howled through the air. Propelled by his immense strength, the thousand-pound log crushed seven or eight Demons on impact. The log was sturdily built and didn’t shatter on landing, instead continuing to roll into the crowd with unabated momentum. For a moment, flesh and blood flew everywhere as severed limbs were ground and scattered.
Even though he had long been aware of the strength of this Lion Hunter Knight—no, Marquis Li, now—Monvert’s eyelid still twitched. To personally witness him casually toss a thousand-pound log that would take two or three strong men just to lift, as if it were a mere pebble, was something else entirely.
As time passed, under the relentless barrage from the Archers and the heavy stones and logs thrown by the Barbarians, the Demons stared at the twenty-eight-blade-high walls. Realizing it was impossible to breach the city, they could only leave the ground littered with their dead and retreat like the tide into the encroaching darkness, where they watched the city from afar.
"Leiden, I’m leaving this to you for now." After giving the order, Levi patted Monvert on the back. "Let’s go find Fulina."
The two exchanged a look and then headed for the White Castle.
