Chapter 1324: Chapter 430: Stormy Times

April 13, 2077

The global situation is turbulent, even Europe, which has just emerged from the chilly spring tides, feels the world’s unrest.

In London, United Kingdom, newspaper stands on the streets display rows of freshly printed newspapers, still exuding a faint scent of ink.

Old Brits who still retain the habit of reading traditional print media all grab a copy of their preferred publication while catching the subway, and slowly read it as they descend smoke-filled stairs to catch their ride.

The Mirror: "According to reliable intelligence, Huang Ban is mobilizing troops and selling off most of its foreign assets, potentially instigating a new wave of terror attacks. Worldwide tensions are growing. The fifth corporate war might be imminent, and our British Commonwealth must prepare in advance."

The Guardian: "The Federal Government pays no attention to British soldiers still suffering in the Cuban POW camp! One cannot help but wonder, where is the people’s tax money going?"

The Times: "The number of civil servants has surpassed five hundred thousand, with government spending again filling the deficit. We might need to consider scaling back the system."

Daily Mail: "One hundred ways to pair macarons with tea."

The Financial Times: "First-quarter GDP growth continued to decline, potentially due to the Cuban war’s impact. The European Dream Act has passed the parliamentary vote, and next quarter’s growth might see a significant rebound."

The Sun: "A maid has appeared at the cafe on Tangkx Street, her figure supporting all of Europe, 100% authentic!"

Each newspaper has its loyal readership. Instead of reality, these media outlets care more about what their users prefer to read.

Yet they are now being utterly vanquished by new media.

As mentioned earlier, words are never as direct as images, because images require no thought.

Moreover, recorded images are less immediate than live broadcasts, which can always provide frontline news instantly.

No newspaper dares send journalists to Horizon Corporation to capture the real situation; their daily empty victories cannot change the fact that enemy lines are advancing. Naturally, they can’t understand the conditions of those prisoners of war.

A commuter on the subway exclaimed

"The second episode of ’The POW Camp’ is live! There’s an exclusive interview this time!"

The crowd on the subway immediately buzzed with excitement, all opening the Voice of the Horizon app to check out the updates.

As a semi-entertainment, semi-documentary film series, although it can’t provide the direct sensory stimulation of a Super Dream, it is one of the few long-distance military operations by the United Kingdom over the years.

The last time was during the South American Falklands war. Although they won, they didn’t gain any tangible benefits.

This concerns British prisoners, so anybody with some sentiment about the Union Jack pays extra attention.

[Episode Two of ’The POW Camp’]

[Night battle illumination traps allies, a disturbance in the POW camp cafeteria]

In terms of disregard for international affairs, America follows the UK like a servant, and in warfare, the UK is equally ruthless, if not worse.

During WWII, after Vichy France surrendered to Germany, to prevent the remaining French navy from becoming allies with Germany under the Vichy government’s orders, Fat Churchill chose to strike first.

At Mers-el-Kébir, the British navy, originally allies, turned their cannons on the unsuspecting French navy, unleashing a full-scale attack without any warning.

The French navy’s elite, cultivated over twenty or thirty years, hadn’t yet faced off against the Germans, and were first bloodied by the UK, causing over a thousand French naval deaths. De Gaulle was dumbfounded when he heard the news.

A century later, the Brits once again display their traditional virtues.

The series begins with players finding recordings on a seized helmet during the nighttime international retreat, blending shaky nocturnal images with soldiers’ heavy panting, immersing viewers as if in a first-person perspective akin to a Super Dream.

With a few explosions occasionally ringing in the ears, soldiers frantically turning back see the explosion’s light highlighting the guards’ international LOGO convoy.

"The enemy is closing in!"

"They’re catching up! Hurry, hurry, hurry!!!"

Boom!

A shell precisely hits the armored vehicle ahead, turning both vehicle and personnel into a blazing torch.

Even through screens, Brits felt the immense pressure from the enemy they usually see only in livestreams, truly pushing their soldiers to retreat step by step.

"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Colonel! We won’t be able to retreat at this rate!"

"How far is the nearest allied position from us? Which unit is it?"

"It’s the Black Forest Mercenaries! Should we notify them to retreat together?"

"No! Shoot the flares atop their position! Let them draw fire for us to buy retreat time."

And that’s exactly what the British officer did.

Thousands of miles away, the people and military of France and Germany erupted in outrage.

"Damn the Brits!"

"It’s them again!"

The British and French could be said to have a hereditary feud, often causing trouble for each other in the European Community Parliament.

This incident could definitely be considered a diplomatic blunder, and the French Foreign Minister, witnessing this, almost wanted to strangle the British bastards.

But in the end, the result was pleasing to all; neither unit managed to escape and they were all captured alive.

One by one, British soldiers dejectedly raised their guns and queued up to surrender, disarmed, and were loaded onto vehicles to be taken to the POW camp.

While registering their names, many found themselves face-to-face with their relatives or friends among the surrendering soldiers, feeling fortunate they survived.

Amidst joy and sorrow, some recognized familiar faces among the fallen soldiers, crying out in anguish.
