Please Divorce Me, Alpha! {BL}

Chapter 12: Fine Then, I’ll Just Commit a Little Crime.

⋅•⋅⊰∙∘❦✾❦∘∙⊱⋅•-

I knew how to assess whether a bruise would fade in a few days, where to press when my ribs hurt, which cuts needed medical attention, and which could wait.

I even knew how long to wait before heading downstairs so my eyes wouldn’t look puffy from crying.

I’d learned all of that because this wasn’t my first rodeo. That realization should have fueled my anger, but instead, it just made me feel tired.

I plopped down on the edge of my bed. Marry Lorenzo ’Dracula’ Castelli.

The name sounded so ridiculous in my head.

I buried my face in my hands. "Great job, Alex."

A knock at the door broke me from my thoughts. I looked up, and Blair stepped inside.

I stared at her. She wasn’t crying anymore...of course not. Her eyes were dry, her hair perfect, and a tiny smile was playing at her lips. She looked almost cheerful.

"What the fuck do you want?"

She closed the door behind her. "Just checking on my dear brother again."

"I’m doing wonderfully as you can see."

Her gaze fell on my bruised face. "You don’t look wonderful."

"Neither do you, but I don’t mention it."

Her smile faded. She walked closer.

"So you’re meeting him in three days." She tilted her head. "You must be terrified."

I shrugged. "Terrified is a strong word."

"He’s a psychopath who feels no remorse for any bad thing he does."

"That’s comforting."

"And everyone knows what the Castellis are like."

"Everyone except me, apparently. I was too busy saving the cake."

She laughed. "You really are an idiot, Alex."

"And yet I’m the one who’ll most likely be getting married first, how long would it take before father gets frustrated with you because you still can’t find a mate and starts treating you like shit too?"

That wiped the amusement off her face for a moment, but then the smile was back. "You’re going to regret this."

"I’m already regretting it."

"You’ll be married to an emotionless monster! That’s nothing to boast about!"

I looked at her. "I thought you said he was a psychopath."

"He’s both."

"Hmm, efficient."

She settled in the chair across from me. "You know what happens to Omegas who marry into families like that?"

"Not really, considering this is my first time."

"They don’t come out alive"

I stared at her. "Blair, you’ve spent your entire life trying to make mine miserable. You don’t need to up your game now."

"I’m serious."

"So am I."

She leaned in closer. "He’ll own you."

That word settled like a stone in my stomach. I looked away.

"You’ll be his husband, his mate."

"I figured that out from the whole marriage thing."

"You’ll belong to him completely...and he’ll kill you, just like he’s done to his other fiances before."

I blinked in shock, Dracula...kills his fiances?!

I clenched my jaw, because I refused to believe a word that came out of Blair’s mouth until I confirmed it for myself. "Get out."

She smiled. "Or you could always marry that old fart."

I looked at her again. She was savoring this moment.

"He’s old," she said sweetly. "But maybe that’s exactly what you need...someone who can finally put someone as stupid as you in line."

"Blair."

"What?"

"Leave or I’ll do something I’ll regret."

"What are you going to do?" She laughed. "You have nowhere to go to escape father’s wrath even if you did do something."

That shut me up. She knew exactly how to hit me where it hurt.

She stood up, smoothing her dress. "You know, maybe you should just end it all while you can as I said before."

I stared at her, she said it so casually, as if she were suggesting I try a different restaurant.

Then she smiled. "At least you’d avoid marrying either of them."

Something inside me snapped. "GET OUT!"

My voice echoed through the room, making Blair jump. I stood, ignoring the pain in my ribs. "I said get out!"

She looked at me for a second, then laughed. "Temper, temper."

"Get out!"

She walked toward the door. Before leaving, she turned back. "Oh, and Alex?"

"What?"

She beamed at me. "Don’t forget to make me your maid of honor."

I stared at her as she opened the door.

"It would be such a lovely sisterly gesture, I’ve got just the dress." And then she left.

The door slammed shut, and the lock clicked. Silence filled the room again.

I stayed there for a moment. My breathing slowly calmed down, but the scent of her perfume lingered in the air, sweet and floral, mixing awkwardly with the metallic smell of blood.

I glanced at the door. Locked once again. Always locked.

I walked back to the bed and sat down. For the first time since Dad had mentioned the marriage, I let my mind wander beyond the next three days.

Beyond Lorenzo, beyond Mr. Harrison...beyond this house.

I closed my eyes. Maybe I was already doomed. But that didn’t mean I had to play along with it.

My gaze drifted toward the locked door. Then back to the travel book in my hands.

A strange feeling settled inside me...it wasn’t hope. Hope felt too soft. This was sharper, more desperate.

I needed money, not just a little. Enough to disappear. Enough for transport, a place to crash, food, documents, a new life. Enough so my father couldn’t just call the police and drag me back home.

My eyes scanned the room. The fancy furniture, the art, the jewelry box....things I had never been allowed to touch.

For the first time, they didn’t seem like mere decorations, they looked like cash.

My heart started to race. I peered at the door, then the travel book on my night stand, then the room again. For twenty-five years, I’d been told I couldn’t leave.

Maybe they were right. Maybe I couldn’t just walk out the front door. But no one had ever said I couldn’t steal my way out.

I swallowed hard. The idea was reckless, stupid, dangerous....possibly even suicidal.

Which, given Blair’s recent suggestions, felt almost poetic.

I slowly closed the travel book. "Steal some money."

My voice sounded odd in the silence. I glanced at the locked door.

"Run." I tightened my grip on the book. "And if they catch me..." I couldn’t finish that thought out loud.

I’d fucking die, I guess.
