Please Divorce Me, Alpha! {BL}

Chapter 24: So My Husband Has a Body Count

⋅•⋅⊰∙∘❦✾❦∘∙⊱⋅•-

"Oh...yes, sir. Of course! We’ve been very busy making babies and...um, stuff." I said, knowing full well Lorenzo had never even touched me without his glove much less fucked me.

He raised an eyebrow while I lowered my cup. "And how many children are you two planning to have?"

I blinked rapidly, "I dunno... Like a lot I guess."

His amusement only grew.

I decided then and there that Frederick was dangerous in an entirely different way.

He had found my weakness: embarrassment.

Sometimes I wondered if he could tell that his son and I didn’t really give a shit about eachother.

Mateo discovered it too.

Lorenzo’s younger brother was everything Lorenzo wasn’t. Where Lorenzo was controlled, Mateo was chaotic.

Where Lorenzo was intimidating, Mateo was charming.

Where Lorenzo spoke only when necessary, Mateo acted like silence was a personal offense.

He flirted with everyone as long as they were human, including me.

His brother’s literal husband.

Much to my annoyance...

The first times Mateo began flirting with me, Lorenzo would do absolutely nothing.

But that completely changed one afternoon.

"My dear Alex," Mateo had said, plopping into the chair across from mine, his blue eyes twinkling with mischief as usual. "You look magnificent today."

"Tell me something I don’t know."

He blinked, taken aback.

I looked up from my book with a smile. "Sorry, I thought you were complimenting me."

Mateo laughed while Lorenzo, who’d been reading a report nearby, didn’t even bother looking up. "Huh, you’re funny In-law. I like you."

I initially thought he didn’t care at all.

Then Mateo leaned in closer. "You know, if Lorenzo ever gets even more of a boring bum, I’d be more than happy to show you a good ti—"

"Finish that sentence," Lorenzo said quietly.

Mateo stopped mid-sentence, I glanced back and forth between them.

Lorenzo finally looked up from his report.

While his expression remained unchanged and his voice steady, something in the atmosphere had shifted.

Mateo smiled slowly. "Relax, brother. Just kidding."

"Good."

Mateo stood up. "You’re no fun."

I watched him leave, then turned back to Lorenzo. "You know, for someone who claims not to care about my life, you seem unusually invested in what your brother does."

Lorenzo looked back down at his report. "I only care about what Mateo does because he’s an idiot."

"Ah." I nodded seriously. "That makes sense."

I didn’t dwell on it at the time, but thinking back now...maybe I should’ve.

Blair was still Blair.

She made an unwelcomed, impromptu visit several months into the marriage, dressed like she’d declared war on every other woman in the building.

She came just to put me down to feel like she was above me like she had always done before.

But things had changed.

She scanned me up and down.

"So," she said sweetly, "why aren’t you pregnant yet?"

I nearly dropped my wine. "Hello to you too, little sis."

"You’ve been married for months."

"Yes."

"And?"

"And what?"

She grinned. "Surely you’re not planning to remain useless forever."

I stared at her for a moment, then smiled back.

"Blair, if I were you, I’d worry less about my nonexistent pregnancy and more about the fact that nobody’s proposed to you yet."

Her smile faltered. I took a sip of my drink. "After all, you’re still comparing every Alpha you meet to my husband, aren’t you?"

She stiffened. "I don’t."

"You do, please give that up."

"I absolutely don’t!"

"You called the last one boring."

"He was boring, you twat!"

"You described the one before him as weak."

"He was."

"And just last month, you told your mother that the guy who owns three hotels wasn’t wealthy enough."

She opened her mouth, but I smiled at her. "You see my issue? You want someone like my husband."

Her face grew tense.

Why? Did she think I’d never catch on?

I leaned back. "Maybe the problem isn’t that nobody is good enough for you, Blair. Maybe you’re just realizing that being the most beautiful person in a room doesn’t guarantee someone you want...wants to marry you."

She stared at me, and I smiled sweetly. "Anyway, congrats on your continued single-hood. I’m sure father must be proud!"

She stormed off shortly after. Leon later remarked that I’d been very brave.

I told him I’d been quite foolish, because then she would run to father and cry that I had bullied her.

By the sixth month, I learned something crucial about my husband.

Lorenzo wasn’t a monster; he was something worse.

He was a man who could easily become a monster without a flicker of emotion.

I found this out one night when I couldn’t sleep.

The estate was eerily quiet, the kind of quiet where every little sound seemed amplified.

I wandered downstairs and heard voices, then I spotted them.

Three men were gathered in one of the private rooms, and a fourth man was on his knees.

I froze, Lorenzo stood a few feet away, as immaculate as ever, his sleeves rolled up just enough to reveal his wrists.

The man on the floor was pleading, bruised and bloody and covering in sweat. I couldn’t catch every word, but the fear in his voice said enough.

"P...please, I am not a traitor!"

Lorenzo listened carefully, then posed a single calm question.

The man responded. Lorenzo’s face was completely expressionless. No shouting, no fits of rage.

Just a quiet resolution.

Out of nowhere, a gun appeared in his hand. I stopped breathing. The shot rang out through the room.

I stumbled back, covering my mouth to stop any sound from escaping.

Lorenzo didn’t flinch. He simply handed the gun to one of the other men and said something I couldn’t quite make out.

Then he walked away casually. Just like that. No shaking no regret, no visible emotions at all.

He killed him...he killed that man.

I returned to my bedroom that night with the stark realization that the rumors weren’t exaggerated.

Lorenzo really was dangerous.

My temporary husband really was terrifying. I climbed into bed and pulled the blankets up, whispering to the ceiling,

"Excellent. Seventy million." That was my only comfort.

In all of our months of marriage, he had been so careful of keeping me away from whatever mafia business this family were into.

But I never imagined that it’ll ever be so gruesome.

I guess I should have expected it, he was the son of a Mafia Don after all.

It’ll be stupid to think his hands were clean.

By the eighth month, something weird happened, I started missing him despite watching him commit literal murder.

Not in a romantic way, absolutely not!

Get your mind out of the romantic side of things, God!

I refused to label it like that.

I just missed having someone else around. The estate was beautiful, but sometimes it felt so massive and silent that I thought I might be the last person on Earth.

So, one evening after staring at my dinner for a while, I did something reckless. I invited Lorenzo to eat with me.

He showed up a few minutes later, looking mildly suspicious. "What happened?"

"Nothing."

"Are you sick?"

"No."

"Did someone threaten you?"

"No."

"Did you break something?"

I frowned. "Why are those your first thoughts?"

"Because you asked me to dinner."

I glared at him. "Fine. You got me, I’m dying."

He pulled out the chair opposite mine. "How long?"

"Approximately three to five business days."

His mouth twitched. I almost missed it.

We ate together in silence at first, but eventually, I said, "This is weird."

"Very."

"I don’t think we’ve ever had a meal together without pretending we’re head over heels in love and shit."

"We haven’t."

I looked at him, and he looked back. Before long, we were laughing. It wasn’t grand or romantic; it was just... easy.

I couldn’t help but wonder, how someone so angelic looking...could be so dangerous.

I told him about Leon nearly dozing off during a security briefing. Lorenzo shared a story about Mateo accidentally triggering the estate’s alarm because he was drunk and trying to shimmy through a window.

I laughed so hard I nearly choked. "You let him live?"

"I debated otherwise."

"How generous."

"I was feeling generous."

By the end of dinner, I realized I had forgotten to mark the days. That unnerved me more than it should’ve.

We’d almost acted like normal people tonight. That was risky, temporary marriages worked best when both parties remembered their temporary status.

I turned off the light and climbed into bed, determined not to linger on how he’d laughed during dinner.

Unluckily, my mind has never been great at respecting my wishes.

So, naturally, it replayed the sound all night.

Yeah, I guess you could say I was doomed from the start.
