Chapter 36: I Was Played by My Own Husband

⋅•⋅⊰∙∘❦✾❦∘∙⊱⋅•-

"Why do you want to leave so badly when I treat you well? The estate is comfortable. The allowances arrive on time. You’ve never once gone without anything you asked for."

There was an amused spark in his eyes. "Did you really think I wouldn’t know?"

My stomach dropped. "K...know what?"

"That you were plotting in that cute head of yours to escape the second I gave you the chance?"

I didn’t reply, Lorenzo’s expression shifted into something dangerously close to a smirk.

"I never left for any business trip, caro. I knew the moment you thought you were alone that you would try something, so I simply waited...enforced lighter security for the night. A helpful new guard. The perfect stage."

‎He tilted his head slightly, still watching me with that same calm amusement.

‎"Very smart of you to seduce my guard for information. Nikolai reported everything the moment you left the garden path."

"You were very careful." That wasn’t the response I’d anticipated, he continued, "You watched the guards for days. You studied the cameras. You even deliberately approached Nikolai."

I stared at him, blood running cold. "Nikolai?"

"Yeah."

The realization that I had been played the entire time hit hard enough to steal whatever breath the fall had left me.

Security really had been lighter tonight.

Because he had wanted me to try and fail.

Because watching me climb that wall and fall on my face had apparently been more entertaining than simply locking the doors.

I closed my eyes. Of course Nikolai had informed Lorenzo. I should’ve guessed. Trusting a mafia guard...what kind of idiot does that? Apparently, I did.

Lorenzo’s voice remained annoyingly calm. "You were clever enough to pick the guard who was easiest to manipulate."

"I did not manipulate him."

Lorenzo looked at me while I avoided his gaze. "I encouraged him."

"You pretended to hurt your ankle." he said, "and you flirted with him."

"I was gathering information."

"You smiled at him."

"I smile at people."

Lorenzo chuckled, the sound low and darkly pleased. "You don’t smile at me."

I paused. "That’s because you’re irritating."

I didn’t like that his voice had a warm edge to it. I especially didn’t like the way his eyes stayed locked on me, steady and unhurried, as if he had all the time in the world to sit in the wet grass and watch me squirm.

I pushed myself up. "Fine. You caught me. Congrats...can I go now?"

"No."

"Can I at least pretend this conversation ended differently?"

"No."

"You’re really committed to being unpleasant."

"So I’ve been told."

I shot him a glare, but then something caught my attention. The security around the wall had actually been lighter. There were fewer guards and patrols.

"You are a horrible person."

"I am well aware, my love."

I was starting to think he was enjoying this. Then I suddenly turned and ran. I managed to get about three steps before a strong arm caught me around the waist.

"Fuck! Let me go!"

"No."

"Lorenzo!"

He lifted me as if I were nothing, like it was merely a minor inconvenience he’d planned for. I kicked my legs in futility. "This is kidnapping!"

"I am your husband."

"That doesn’t make kidnapping legal!"

"I never said it was."

He threw me over his shoulder. I saw the ground upside down, watching the grass and gravel zoom by in an undignified blur. "This is so humiliating!"

"I’d imagine."

"Put me down!"

"No."

"Lorenzo, I swear to God—!"

He walked on, and I pounded my fists on his back, which did nothing except make my knuckles ache. "Put me down, I’ll fucking kill you!"

"You’re making this unnecessarily difficult."

I struggled immediately, fists pounding against his back, legs kicking, every curse I knew spilling out in a continuous stream of outraged disbelief.

Lorenzo responded by giving my ass a firm, casual slap that cracked through the night air and sent a fresh wave of pure offended fury through me.

I went completely still for a moment. Then my outrage came charging back.

‎"Did you just slap my ass?!"

"Yes."

"You did not!"

"I did. Calm yourself."

"You can’t just—Lorenzo!"

He actually chuckled. I couldn’t believe it. "I hate you."

"I’ve heard."

"I mean it."

"I’m going to make your life miserable!"

His voice stayed infuriatingly calm. "You already do."

I stopped fighting for a split second, then why didn’t he just let me go?!

Then I muttered, "Good."

Eventually, we got back to the estate. I thought Lorenzo would take me back to my bedroom, but instead, he walked right past it.

My stomach dropped. "Where are we going?"

He didn’t answer.

"Lorenzo."

Silence.

"Why are we passing my room?"

Still nothing. I craned my neck to see where we were heading: the master bedroom.

"No." Lorenzo opened the door. "No, no, no!" He carried me inside. "Absolutely not! Put me down this instant!"

He finally set me down on the massive bed. I immediately scrambled back, putting as much distance between us as the mattress allowed.

"What are you doing, dracula?!"

Lorenzo calmly took my backpack from my shoulder and placed it on a nearby chair, as if he were just tidying up after a long day instead of confiscating the spoils of my failed escape.

I stared at him. "You can’t be serious about keeping me here."

‎"You can no longer be trusted on your own. From tonight onward, we share a room and a bed. After all, married couples sleep on the same bed, don’t they?"

My mouth dropped open as I shot him a glare. He loosened his coat and draped it over a chair, rolling up his sleeves with the same calm demeanor he had for everything, whether it was business or dragging his runaway husband across the lawn.

Then he looked at me. "From tonight onward, you’ll sleep here...with me."

I stared at the bed. Then at him. Then back at the bed. "You’re joking."

"No."

"We have separate bedrooms!"

"Not anymore." he said, "Because you attempted to escape, and this is your punishment."

"That’s not a punishment!"

Lorenzo’s eyes glimmered with amusement. "Isn’t it?"

I gawked at him in horror. "You’re insane!"

"Probably."

"You can’t force me to sleep here...with...with you!"

"Of course, I can."

"Why?!"

He kept that annoyingly calm expression. "Because you’re my mate."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. He strolled over to the wardrobe as if he hadn’t just rearranged my entire existence with a single sentence, unbuttoning his cuffs with that same maddening calm.

I remained sitting on the edge of the bed, still dressed in black, dirt on my hoodie, grass stains on my knees, and my carefully packed escape bag taken like contraband.

This was not how tonight was meant to go. I’d imagined myself leaving the estate under the cover of darkness, catching a train, finding a cheap hotel, maybe in a new city where I’d watch a dramatic sunrise from a hill while a soundtrack of freedom played in the background.

Instead, I was perched on my husband’s bed while he prepped for sleep.

I looked at him. He looked back. "Get comfortable, tesoro."

My eye twitched. "You’re loving this."

"A little."

I sank back onto the mattress and stared at the ceiling. My escape plan lasted a whopping seventeen minutes. Seventeen.

I’d been thwarted by a wall, a sleeping guard, my own backpack, gravity, and a guy who clearly had nothing better to do than wait outside his estate for me to embarrass myself.

I covered my face with both hands. "God...I hate my goddamn life!"
