Chapter 50: Another Escape Plan Bites the Dust

⋅•⋅⊰∙∘❦✾❦∘∙⊱⋅•-

"Your transportation." he responded.

I stared at him. "My transportation?"

"Yes."

"Why are there enough cars here to invade a small country?!"

His eyes flicked to the convoy. "There aren’t that many."

I looked again. "There are at least fifteen!"

"Seventeen actually." He corrected.

I turned to him slowly as I rubbed my temples. My lovely plan. My careful, delicate little plan.

Dead! Buried! Probably already forgotten!

I’d mentally ranked my failed escape attempts.

Number one: climbing the estate wall.

Number two: embarrassing the hell out of Lorenzo in public.

And now number three was gone...

How the heck was I supposed to escape when I had a literal army trailing my ass?!

I looked at Lorenzo. "You set this up on purpose!"

He looked genuinely confused. "You asked to go shopping."

"I asked to go book shopping."

"Yes."

"Not to lead a military convoy through the city."

He gave me a faint smile. "Did you really think I’d let my prone-to-escape Omega roam around unsupervised?"

My mouth dropped open as he continued, "You wound me with how dumb you think I am."

"I don’t think you’re dumb."

"Thank you, love. Which is exactly why you’re having an escort."

I stared at him, hating that he was right. It’s one of those irritating qualities he has. "You’re such a controlling little shit."

"I suppose I am." He said it without hesitation and a casual shrug.

I blinked. "You’re supposed to deny it!"

"Why?"

"So I can argue."

"You’ll argue anyway."

He wasn’t wrong and that made it worse, I crossed my arms. "I’m not going anywhere."

"Then the books will have to come to you."

I glared at him and he waited. I glared harder as he looked amused. "You’re enjoying this."

"A little."

"You are a terrible person."

"Yet you married me."

"Under duress."

"Technically, you signed."

"Technically, I was sold to your ass."

For just a moment, his expression changed, the amusement had vanished.

Of course, I noticed. But before it turned serious, Lorenzo pulled out a black card from his jacket and held it toward me.

I looked at it. "What?"

"Your shopping."

I glanced between the card and him. "You expect me to use this?"

"Yes."

I took it. "If I max it out, don’t blame me."

"Go for it."

I frowned. "Seriously?"

"Seriously."

"You won’t get mad?"

"No."

"I could buy an entire bookstore."

"Then we’ll have somewhere to put it."

I stared at him, surprised.

That wasn’t the reaction I was expecting; I had hoped to use financial threats against him. Instead, he gave me the green light to unleash retail chaos.

I tucked the card into my pocket, and against my better judgment, found myself wondering how much was actually on it.

I immediately got annoyed with myself. Why was I even curious? I was supposed to be escaping, not conducting a financial audit of my husband.

I started heading for the car when Lorenzo spoke up softly, almost pleasantly.

"Bring him straight back to me." The men immediately straightened. "If you lose him..."

He paused, scanning the group. "...you’ll all lose your tongues."

My foot stopped mid-step, the men answered in unison. "Yes, sir!"

My stomach dropped. I slowly turned back around. "Lorenzo."

He looked at me.

"T...that’s unnecessary." I mumbled, I really didn’t want anyone to lose their tongues no matter how devious I was.

He kept his expression calm. "They won’t lose you."

"But—"

"They understand how important it is to keep you safe."

I looked at the men, who looked terrified. Not of me, but of Lorenzo. And in that moment, my escape plan shifted from impossible to morally complicated.

If I ran, these men would face punishment. I hated that. I hated that Lorenzo knew exactly how to keep me bound without me even realizing it.

I climbed into the back seat, and one of the guards opened the door for me. I settled in, arms crossed, and stared out the tinted window. Lorenzo didn’t join me.

Apparently, he had more pressing matters than watching me peruse horror novels under armed supervision.

I should’ve felt grateful, but instead, I felt insulted.

The convoy started to move. One car in front, two behind, more surrounding us. I watched them through the window.

Perfect formation, perfect spacing. Perfectly absurd.

I sighed. There went escape plan number three. Maybe number four could involve bribing a helicopter pilot?

No, too pricey. A sewer? Too gross.

Hiding in a giant cardboard box and getting shipped away to another country? Too obvious.

I rested my forehead against the cool window as the city blurred by outside.

People strolled along sidewalks with coffee, students rushed to buses, couples crossed streets hand-in-hand.

Nobody knew that inside one of those black SUVs was a grown man being escorted to a bookstore like some sort of national treasure about to defect.

A soft knock came against the divider. I ignored it. Another knock. I turned slowly to the front.

One of the guards turned slightly. "Sir?"

"What?"

"Would you like some music?"

I looked at him, and he hesitated. I kept staring at him.

"Forget it." he said, realizing that the Don’s Omega was way too annoyed for that.

"Good." I said.

He turned back around. I glanced out the window again, my mouth twitching despite myself.

Then I remembered the black card in my pocket. I pulled it out and stared at it. Maybe there was still a way to vanish some other time.

I had learned one crucial thing about Lorenzo.

He was always three steps ahead. So if I wanted to outsmart him, I couldn’t just think three steps ahead. I needed to think four. Or five. Maybe even six.

I tucked the card back into my pocket and leaned against the seat.

The convoy continued toward the bookstore, gliding smoothly through traffic while I quietly ran through every possible escape plan I could think of.

My previous attempts may have failed, but that didn’t mean I was out of tricks. It just meant that Lorenzo had won this round. And unfortunately for him, I was extremely stubborn.

So stubborn that if he thought a convoy of seventeen cars would discourage me, he clearly hadn’t learned the most important lesson about being married to me.

My stubborness was very, very hard to get rid of.
