Please Divorce Me, Alpha! {BL}
Chapter 8: My Mouth Has No Survival Instinct⋅•⋅⊰∙∘❦✾❦∘∙⊱⋅•-
The bodyguard looked ready to kill me, while the white-haired man merely continued to watch. I squinted at him. "What?"
Nothing...I checked him out from head to toe. "Dracula."
The bodyguard’s eyes went wide. I didn’t stop there. "You’ve got this dramatic aesthetic going on, so I figured you wouldn’t mind."
The man blinked once, and I took it as encouragement. "Also, your hair is ridiculous, what even are you? A ghost or something?"
I didn’t know why I’d blurted that out. It actually was beautiful hair.
But I was already on a roll insulting his bodyguard, his sunglasses, his manners, and now his hair, so I might as well keep digging my own grave.
I stepped around him.
"And you ruined my fucking cake, thanks a lot." That, I figured, was the worst sin of all. I pointed at the destroyed dessert one last time. "Hope you’re proud, morons."
Then I walked away.
I made it about ten steps before movement caught my attention behind me. I didn’t turn around. I was still fuming.
Really fuming. I’d had people ruin my life before, but this stranger had somehow managed to join their ranks in under two minutes.
I heard one of the bodyguards say something sharply, and then silence followed. I didn’t realize the white-haired man had lifted a hand to stop his bodyguard from pursuing me.
I didn’t see the look on his face as he watched me disappear around the corner, a mix of disbelief and amusement.
And I definitely didn’t grasp that I had just insulted Lorenzo Castelli...
One of the most feared men in the country and beyond.
The man whose name I’d eventually end up marrying into.
At that moment, I had no clue. All I knew was that I wanted that dam chocolate cake.
When I returned to the ballroom, the dessert table was completely empty. I froze. "No."
A waiter was clearing away the last plates, and I stared at him, completely heartbroken. "Where’s the cake?"
He looked back at me politely. "It’s been cleared, sir."
I felt something inside me shatter even more. "But there was a whole cake."
"I’m afraid it’s finished."
"Finished?!"
"Yes, sir."
I glanced from the barren table to him. "All of it?"
He nodded.
I stared off into space.
That cake had been my only shot at happiness, probably for the next six months. I ambled away, still with frosting smeared on my sleeve. Apparently, even my cake couldn’t meet its end with any dignity.
I had barely crossed the ballroom when a hand snagged my arm. I turned to see my father, already sporting a furious expression. "Where have you been?!"
I nodded toward the bathroom. "Bathroom."
"For twenty minutes?"
"I...uh, I had digestive issues."
His eyes narrowed. Blair appeared beside him, looking all sweet and innocent.
"Father was worried," she chimed in. "You know about his heart condition, you shouldn’t make him feel that way."
I raised an eyebrow at her. "Wow, how touching."
My father tightened his grip on my arm. "I told you not to wander."
"I’m twenty-five, dad."
"That doesn’t mean you can embarrass me!"
"But I was just in the bathroom." I lied.
"Stop arguing for once." He dragged me toward the center of the ballroom.
I stumbled slightly. "Where are we going?"
"You’re going to meet someone."
Oh, hell no!
I halted. "No."
His grip tightened. "Don’t start now, Alex."
"Who?"
"A friend."
"Your friends are usually sixty-year-old gross men who smell like cigars."
Blair giggled, and my dad shot me a glare. We stopped in front of a middle-aged guy in an expensive charcoal suit, probably in his late forties...maybe early fifties.
He had thinning hair, a round face, and a smile that made me want to check if my wallet was still in my pocket.
"This is Mr. Harrison," my dad introduced.
The man sized me up slowly. I fought the urge to retreat behind my father...
as if a man like that would ever protect me.
"This is my son, Alex."
Mr. Harrison smiled. "Pleasure to meet you."
I returned a polite smile. "Likewise." What a lie.
My dad seemed thrilled. "This is a fantastic opportunity for both of you."
I stared at him, then at Mr. Harrison, then back at my father. "You mean you’re trying to set me up with him?"
Blair laughed. "Alex!"
"What?"
She covered her mouth, stifling a laugh. "He’s a very respectable Alpha."
Eww...
I glanced back at the man. "I’m sure he is."
My father squeezed my arm. "Behave."
I lowered my voice. "He’s old enough to be my father."
Mr. Harrison chuckled awkwardly. Blair smiled. "I think they’re a perfect match."
I looked at her. "And I think you’d make a better match with a damn snake."
Her smile faded. "Alex!"
"What? You already have the personality and all."
Tears filled Blair’s eyes almost instantly. I had to respect the efficiency. "I don’t understand why he’s always so cruel to me."
Oh, brother...
My father pivoted toward me. "Apologize."
I opened my mouth, then shut it again. No point. I’d learned that arguing was a luxury I couldn’t afford. So I smiled...a soft, polite smile that I’d been coached to use since childhood.
"I’m sorry." I said. That you’re a bitch.
My father nodded.
"Good." Then he turned to Mr. Harrison. "My son can be difficult, but he knows when to behave."
I smiled wider, all while planning his funeral in my head.
Mr. Harrison moved a little closer. I felt his Alpha scent envelop me. My stomach churned. My father shot me a warning look.
So I did what I was trained to do: lowered my eyes, softened my expression, and let out just a hint of my pheromones...just enough, not too much, never too much.
I had been prepared for this: smile, be agreeable, only speak if spoken to, make myself appealing, and pretend I had a choice.
Mr. Harrison’s face shifted almost instantly. His gaze lingered on me. I kept smiling, though my stomach still churned. Somehow, a tiny smear of frosting at my hairline was the only thing keeping me from completely losing my mind.
Because while everyone was discussing whether I was a suitable match for some wealthy Alpha, I was just standing there, fixated on that slab of chocolate cake lying facedown on the marble floor.
That cake had been the only thing I wanted tonight, not a husband, not an Alpha, not a wealthy family, not a future chosen for me.
Just cake. And somehow, even that had been snatched away.
I smiled sweetly at the man in front of me while silently debating how much prison time you’d get for poisoning your own father.
It was probably a lot, which was inconvenient since I had a feeling I’d need my freedom someday.
