Chapter 103: Chapter 103

Mike was awakened by his phone ringing.

The moment he opened his eyes, Snivy used Vine Whip to pass the phone into his hand and he answered.

"Hello..."

"Mike, are you still asleep?"

Hearing Professor Rowan’s voice, Mike sat upright and yawned.

"I’m awake now, Professor."

"You really slept in. It’s already almost noon. By the way, Professor Kukui and Elite Four Lucian have both arrived. Do you want to come over?"

"They’re both here already? All right, I’ll head over now."

"There’s no rush. Eat lunch first."

"Okay."

After ending the call, Mike scratched at his messy bed hair and glanced toward the corner, where the two troublesome members of his team were hanging around.

He shook his head.

Climbing out of bed, Mike reached over and stroked Snivy’s head.

Snivy narrowed her eyes happily and rubbed against his palm.

"Sni~"

Mike walked into the bathroom.

A cup of water had already been prepared beside the sink, along with a toothbrush covered in toothpaste.

What could he say?

Snivy simply cared too much about him!

Mike rinsed his mouth and began brushing his teeth.

Once he finished washing up, he had Gengar carry the backpack and left the room.

After taking Gengar and the others out for a satisfying meal, Mike headed toward the Gym.

He was already familiar with the route and soon reached the room where everyone had gathered. Faint discussion could be heard from inside.

Mike knocked, pushed open the door, and entered.

"Professor Rowan, Professor Oak, Professor Kukui, Cynthia, Elite Four Lucian—good afternoon."

He greeted them one by one like he was reading off a menu.

"Good afternoon. Did you sleep well?" Professor Oak asked with a smile.

Mike grinned and nodded.

"Traveling in the wilderness exhausted me. The moment I touched a real bed last night, I passed out. I didn’t expect to sleep until now. Sorry about that."

"No problem at all."

Professor Oak waved dismissively.

"Since you’re here, let me introduce you properly. This is Professor Kukui from Alola, a specialist in Pokémon moves."

Mike turned toward Kukui.

He looked exactly like Mike remembered.

Years beneath Alola’s sunlight had left his skin lightly tanned. His long black hair was tied into a low ponytail, and a neatly trimmed goatee covered his chin.

Green-framed glasses rested on his nose.

A white baseball cap bearing a rainbow design sat on his head, while his lab coat hung casually open around his shoulders.

He wore no shirt beneath it, leaving his sharply defined abs completely exposed. Light gray cropped pants and green beach sandals completed the look.

As expected of someone from Alola.

He really did embrace the region’s carefree style.

Mike also remembered that Professor Kukui was one of Alola’s stronger Trainers.

His strength was supposedly comparable to an Elite Four member, perhaps even approaching that of a weaker Champion.

"Hello, Professor Kukui."

Mike greeted him politely.

"Hello, Assistant Mike. I watched the videos you filmed. They were extremely meaningful, and the footage itself was excellent."

Kukui laughed heartily and extended a hand.

Mike smiled and shook it.

"Thank you."

"And this is one of Sinnoh’s Elite Four, Lucian."

Mike turned toward Lucian.

For some reason, he had also developed a strange condition where seeing Lucian made him want to laugh.

Suppressing it with all his strength, Mike extended a hand.

"Hello, Elite Four Lucian."

Lucian shook his hand before immediately asking, "How long has it been since you updated?"

Mike: Σ(°▽°ノ)ノ

’Seriously?’

’That’s the first thing you say when we meet?’

’You’re already asking for an update?’

"Nonsense! I upload something almost every day."

"I mean The Wide World of Pokémon series."

"That series isn’t something I can update casually. Don’t worry, the next installment will be out soon. I’m working overtime on it."

"Oh? What type are you covering this time?" Professor Oak asked curiously.

"Grass."

"Grass types... That’s good! I’ve always loved Grass-type Pokémon. They carry such an overflowing sense of life that whenever I see them, I can’t help but want to compose a—"

"Professor Oak, I think we should get back to the main topic."

Everyone spoke at the same time.

Professor Oak: "..."

"That’s probably for the best."

He cleared his throat.

"Professor Kukui, this is Mike—the one who proposed that Stantler can evolve into Wyrdeer, as well as the existence of the lost move."

Kukui’s eyes immediately lit up.

"So it was him?"

Lucian also looked toward Mike curiously.

Mike lifted the camera hanging from his neck and raised an eyebrow.

"Now you understand why I’m here, right? There isn’t much better material for a photographer than the appearance of a completely new Pokémon."

Lucian adjusted his glasses and nodded.

"That’s true."

Mike examined Lucian more closely.

He had to admit that Lucian had a distinctly melancholic, mature charm.

His shoulder-length purple hair framed a pair of matching glasses, while his clear, gentle eyes and relaxed movements gave him a quiet, composed presence.

There was a certain appeal to him.

The longer Mike looked at him, the more he wanted to laugh.

Everyone knew that what had made Lucian truly famous wasn’t merely his high ranking among the Elite Four.

It was his terrifying ability to handle overtime.

Across every League in the world, the only person who might rival his capacity for endless paperwork was probably Larry over in Paldea.

"Everyone, take a seat," Professor Oak said.

They all settled into their places.

"The Stantler were transferred here this morning."

Professor Oak looked around the table.

"Our objective is to help these Stantler relearn Psyshield Bash. Even if only one succeeds, that would be enough to prove the possibility."

"As for training Pokémon to learn moves, Rowan and I probably aren’t as qualified as the rest of you."

He looked toward Kukui and Lucian.

"So tell us—how should we go about teaching a move that has already disappeared?"

Professor Kukui raised one hand.

"First, I’d like to ask something. What type do we believe Psyshield Bash is?"

Professor Oak repeated Mike’s explanation and summarized the discussion from the previous day.

Kukui lowered his head and stroked his goatee.

He found the theory extremely reasonable.

As a specialist in Pokémon moves, he was the first to offer his own opinion.

"If that’s the case, then personally, I think we should arrange several Pokémon to train alongside these Stantler while we deliberately interfere with and guide the process."

"The Pokémon acting as instructors would naturally need to be Psychic types, and the moves they teach should resemble Psyshield Bash as closely as possible."

"We’d also need a Trainer who specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon..."

Before Kukui could finish, his gaze shifted toward Lucian.

Lucian: "..."

Professor Oak nodded.

"Exactly. That matches what we discussed yesterday. Mike proposed essentially the same method, which is why we invited the two of you here."

Then Professor Oak turned toward Mike.

"How do you think we should structure the experiment?"

The discovery had originated with Mike, and his theory had been thorough and convincing.

His knowledge of Pokémon was also unusually deep.

Professor Oak genuinely wanted to hear his plan.

Mike thought for a while before nodding.

"My idea is similar to Professor Kukui’s."

"We should have several Psychic-type Pokémon teach them Psychic-type moves."

"Zen Headbutt would be a good starting point because it’s a physical contact move. It would help them understand how to combine psychic energy with bodily impact."

"At the same time, I want them to practice barrier-related moves such as Barrier, Light Screen, and Reflect."

"Once they’ve gained some proficiency with Zen Headbutt and defensive barriers, we could try having them maintain a barrier while charging forward with Zen Headbutt."

Mike continued, "By combining several moves this way, they might gradually stumble onto the basic structure of Psyshield Bash."

"They probably won’t learn it immediately, but at the very least, we can introduce the idea that different moves don’t necessarily need to remain separate. Their effects can be combined."

"Also, I think modern Stantler’s psychic power is weaker than it was in the past."

"So we should include training aimed specifically at strengthening their mental energy."

"Only once their psychic power improves will learning and controlling Psychic-type moves become easier."

Mike paused.

Cynthia handed him a glass of water.

He gave her a grateful look, took several sips, then continued.

"And I don’t think we should rush this."

"We can’t force their growth just to get results. If we damage the Stantler’s potential by overtraining them, then the entire experiment loses its meaning."

"Using Zen Headbutt together with defensive barriers to recreate Psyshield Bash... Combining multiple moves together."

Professor Kukui nodded thoughtfully.

"That’s a good approach. I understand. Leave that part to me."

"I’ll have my Bronzong and the others guide the Stantler through meditation while teaching them Psychic-type moves," Lucian added.

Professor Oak nodded.

"Then let’s all do our best."

"Hopefully, we can bring Wyrdeer back into this beautiful world."

"Yes."

Everyone nodded.

"All right. Let’s go see the Stantler first," Professor Rowan said.

"Seeing them in person will make it easier for all of you to design a proper training plan."

He and Professor Oak left the room.

Mike and the others followed.
