Chapter 108: Chapter 108
"..."
Lucian stared across the blanket at Mike.
Then he calmly said, "You know, if you have nothing to do, you could always edit your video or go look for filming material nearby."
Mike: "..."
"Fine, fine. I get it."
Mike had Gengar spread another blanket and moved over there instead.
He took out his tablet and camera.
Glameow wandered over and curled up beside him for a nap.
Snivy used Vine Whip to crack walnuts for him, while Beedrill remained hidden among the leaves above.
Gengar stared silently at Bronzong and the Stantler meditating in the distance, chewing on a walnut without saying anything.
"What’s wrong?" Mike asked.
Gengar looked back at him.
After thinking for a moment, he pointed toward Bronzong and the others.
"Gar—"
[Psychic power. I want to learn too!]
"You want to learn that?"
Mike looked up in surprise.
Gengar nodded.
"I’ll ask Lucian for you."
Mike reached out and tugged lightly at the corner of Gengar’s mouth before looking toward Lucian.
"Lucian, can I ask you a favor?"
Lucian turned his attention away from the Stantler and looked toward Mike, waiting for him to continue.
"When you have time, could you ask Bronzong and the others to teach Gengar as well? He seems really interested in learning how to control psychic power."
Lucian looked at Gengar.
Gengar flashed him his signature mischievous grin and a thumbs up.
Lucian nodded.
"That’s fine."
He took out another Poké Ball and released a Pokémon.
Espeon.
Lucian gently stroked Espeon’s back and whispered several things into its ear before looking toward Gengar.
"Why don’t we start now? Espeon and I can personally teach you how to use the psychic energy within your body more efficiently."
Gengar nodded so rapidly his head looked like it might fall off.
He entrusted his thin bamboo staff to Mike for safekeeping, then happily followed Lucian and Espeon away.
Mike stroked Glameow’s head as she dozed beside him, lowered his gaze, and began editing footage on his tablet.
Nearby, Professor Kukui and Professor Rowan continued discussing the academic details of the experiment.
Roark had skipped the mine that day and was curiously observing the Stantler’s meditation training.
This meditation wasn’t the move Calm Mind.
Instead, Bronzong and the other Psychic Pokémon were using their psychic energy to establish mental communication with the Stantler, which possessed latent psychic power of their own.
With the sun beating down overhead, Mike soon started sweating heavily.
A breeze suddenly brushed across him.
Mike turned and found that Snivy had somehow moved beside him.
She was holding a broad leaf almost as large as her body and using it to fan him.
Mike immediately felt bad for her and stroked her head.
"It’s okay. I’m not that hot."
Snivy rubbed against his palm but continued fanning him anyway.
At the same time, another vine extended from her neck, lifted a bowl, and placed it in front of Mike.
It was filled with perfectly shelled walnut kernels.
Mike was too moved for words.
He swore that Snivy was the best Pokémon in the entire world!
Mike spent ages trying to convince her that she didn’t need to keep fussing over him.
Snivy simply nodded obediently to everything he said while continuing to fan him without stopping.
Her attitude was essentially:
’You talk. I’ll listen. I’m still not changing anything.’
Unable to win with her, Mike could only lower his head and continue editing.
...
Around noon, Mike finally looked up and rolled his aching neck.
Several cracks sounded from his joints.
He checked the time, then looked around.
Gengar still hadn’t returned.
Somewhere nearby, he was continuing his lesson with Lucian and Espeon, learning how to control his psychic energy.
Glameow lay beside Mike, playing with the Soothe Bell around her neck.
Snivy was still fanning him.
Beedrill remained hidden among the leaves.
The Stantler and Bronzong were still meditating, while Professor Rowan and Professor Kukui continued discussing the research.
Roark was staring blankly into space.
Mike stood and began preparing lunch with Snivy.
Working together, the two quickly finished the meal and the aroma drew the professors and everyone else over.
Looking at the table full of food, Professor Kukui smiled.
"Thanks for the hard work."
Mike shook his head.
Bronzong and the others also finished their meditation, so Mike carried the Stantler’s meals over to them.
Then he returned to the table, and everyone began eating.
"This afternoon, we can start their move training," Lucian said after putting down his chopsticks and wiping his mouth with a napkin.
"That quickly?" Professor Kukui asked.
Lucian nodded.
"I can feel that they’ve already developed a basic understanding of how to control their psychic energy. This afternoon, we can begin with some relatively simple moves."
Professor Kukui thought for a moment.
"Then how about Barrier, Reflect, and Light Screen?"
"Once they can use those proficiently, we can move on to physical attacks such as Zen Headbutt."
Lucian nodded.
He had no objections.
...
That afternoon, Lucian and Professor Kukui began teaching the five Stantler new moves.
They started with Barrier.
Professor Kukui truly lived up to his reputation as a specialist in Pokémon moves.
His ability to teach techniques was exceptional, and with Lucian assisting him, the Stantler’s progress was remarkably fast.
In only a single afternoon, one Stantler managed to learn both Barrier and Reflect.
Its control was still rough, but it had successfully used both moves.
Mike stood beside Professor Kukui.
"Professor, I think we should mark this Stantler somehow. It managed to learn Barrier and Reflect in only one afternoon. It might be the one with the best chance of rediscovering Psyshield Bash."
Professor Kukui nodded.
"I agree. Its potential seems particularly strong."
After giving that Stantler a harmless identifying mark, Mike began preparing dinner.
...
After dinner, Mike approached Professor Kukui before leaving the courtyard.
"Professor, I probably won’t stay here all day for the next few days. I want to take Gengar and the others around Oreburgh City and explore a little."
He glanced toward Gengar beside him.
"I’ll still prepare their meals and bring them over at mealtimes, and Gengar can keep coming here for his own training."
"No problem."
Professor Kukui nodded.
"You really don’t have to go through the trouble of cooking for them."
Mike shook his head.
"I promised the Stantler I would."
"Besides, you need to eat well if you want to be in a good mood for learning new moves."
After chatting for a little longer, Mike left the courtyard.
He noticed Roark walking beside him on his way back toward the Gym.
"Gym Leader Roark, is Oreburgh Mine open to visitors?"
Roark stopped and looked toward him.
"Interested?"
Mike gestured toward the camera hanging around his neck.
"A little. I might even be able to photograph some Pokémon fossils while I’m there."
Roark smiled.
"If you’re interested, I can take you inside tomorrow morning."
"But prepare yourself. The conditions down there are rough, and it gets extremely stuffy."
"That’s fine. I can handle it."
Mike smiled.
"Thank you, Gym Leader Roark."
"Mm."
Roark nodded and headed off.
Mike returned to his hotel room as well.
It was time to record the voice-over for his video!
