Chapter 110: Chapter 110

Professor Rowan put away his phone.

Thinking back over everything Mike had introduced in the video, he found the young man increasingly difficult to understand.

Every Pokémon Mike filmed was covered in remarkable detail.

Some of the information was so specific that even Rowan himself had nearly forgotten it.

Mike also clearly listed the dangers associated with different Pokémon and explained how much more threatening certain species became when they gathered in large numbers.

But then Lucian approached him.

Professor Rowan looked up and smiled.

"The new episode of The Wide World of Pokémon is out. It covers Grass types this time, and there’s quite a lot of useful information."

"I think it’ll help with that project you’ve been preparing."

After watching Mike’s first episode of The Wide World of Pokémon, Lucian had begun organizing material about responding to the dangers posed by different wild Pokémon.

The goal was to help League investigators conduct search-and-rescue operations more effectively and recognize environmental clues in the field.

"Understood. I’ll watch it now."

Professor Rowan nodded.

"Good. I won’t bother you, then. I’ll go see whether Professor Kukui needs any help."

He stood and walked toward Kukui.

Lucian took out his phone but checked the fan group first.

[Propht: Damn that bastard! How can a Grass-type episode not include our beautiful, adorable Bellossom and Vileplume?!]

[JuicePigeon: Your Vileplume is beautiful and adorable?!]

[CrazySilence: He probably just didn’t get the footage. Otherwise he would’ve included them.]

[Mat_tokki: But Oddish and Gloom are pretty common, aren’t they?]

[PurpleScholar: Bellossom and Vileplume aren’t nearly as easy to encounter. Didn’t you notice that every species in the video appeared with its full evolutionary line?]

Lucian smiled and shook his head.

Then he opened the episode and began watching carefully.

"Victreebel... There are quite a few wilderness casualty reports every year involving them."

"Tangela vines can leave clothes smelling pleasant? I should borrow a few next time."

...

Elsewhere, Mike finally yawned and sat up in bed.

Glameow shook herself, pretended absolutely nothing had happened, stepped across Mike’s legs, and gracefully jumped onto the floor.

Mike looked toward Gengar and Beedrill, who were hanging around near the corner.

"What time is it?"

"Sni."

[A little after ten.]

Mike rubbed his eyes and got out of bed.

"Have you all eaten breakfast?"

"Gar—"

[We already ate.]

"All right. I’ll wash up, buy some ingredients, then head over to the courtyard and cook."

"This afternoon, we’ll get ready and go down into the mine with Gym Leader Roark. Maybe we’ll dig up something valuable."

Mike entered the bathroom and picked up the water and toothbrush Snivy had prepared in advance.

...

At noon, after eating, Mike sat in the courtyard staring into space.

Lucian took a sip of tea and lazily yawned.

He had to admit that this lifestyle was far better than sitting inside League headquarters handling paperwork.

There was still work to do here, but at least the lunches and dinners were incomparable.

Mike’s cooking was even better than some professional restaurant chefs Lucian had eaten from.

Over the past few days, Lucian felt as though he had actually gained weight.

"When’s the next episode coming out?"

Lucian adjusted his glasses and looked toward Mike, who was sprawled lazily in his chair.

Mike: "..."

"Didn’t I literally upload one yesterday? Where do you expect me to magically produce enough footage for another one?"

"I remember you saying you’d almost finished gathering footage for Water types too."

"I used a lot of the Water-type footage in the Grass episode. I don’t have enough left."

"Work faster then!"

"Where exactly am I supposed to work faster?!"

Mike stared at him speechlessly.

"So far, I’ve only traveled through Sandgem Town, Jubilife City, and Oreburgh City. I haven’t even reached the coast yet. How much Water-type footage do you expect me to have?"

"You’ve seriously become addicted to demanding updates, haven’t you?"

Lucian coughed twice.

’How am I supposed to copy your wilderness safety material if you don’t upload?’

"Anyway, how are the Stantler doing?" Mike asked.

"The marked Stantler’s psychic power is improving much faster than the others, and it’s learning moves extremely quickly."

"It has already mastered Reflect, Barrier, and Psychic. It’s currently learning Light Screen."

"The others have only managed Reflect so far."

"Its talent is that good?"

Mike was surprised.

Then again, perhaps it wasn’t that strange.

They were feeding them exceptionally well and providing several world-class instructors.

How could they not improve quickly?

"I think that Stantler can begin learning Zen Headbutt now," Mike suggested. "It can continue practicing Light Screen while learning it."

"Professor Kukui, Professor Rowan, and I came to the same conclusion."

Lucian paused.

"However, we’ve discovered another issue."

"These Stantler don’t seem to understand why they’re learning all these moves."

"I’m worried that even after they master Zen Headbutt and the other techniques, they may lack a clear goal once we begin trying to recreate Psyshield Bash. That could slow their progress considerably."

"So what you’re saying is... they need some motivation?" Mike asked.

"We think that would be best, but it has to be positive motivation—something capable of awakening their competitive spirit."

"Something that’ll stir up their fighting spirit..."

Mike rubbed his chin.

An idea seemed to occur to him.

Lucian noticed the increasingly suspicious expression on his face.

"What did you think of?"

"Don’t worry about it. Leave this part to me. I guarantee I’ll arrange something perfect."

Mike grinned and stood.

"I’m heading out to meet Gym Leader Roark and visit the mine. Call me if anything happens."

Lucian watched Mike leave with a growing sense of foreboding.

Mike walked through the streets with Gengar and the others while replaying Lucian’s words in his head.

He bent down, picked Glameow up, and carried her through the crowd.

"What could possibly awaken their fighting spirit better than a honey trap..."

Mike’s grin became increasingly sleazy.

"No, wait."

"A honey-deer trap!"

Glameow’s tail immediately whipped across his arm without mercy.

"Ow..."

...

Mike reached the plaza outside Oreburgh Mine and explained his purpose to one of the workers.

The worker quickly disappeared into the mine.

Before long, Roark came out.

"Good afternoon, Mike."

"Good afternoon, Gym Leader Roark. Is today still a good time to go inside?"

"Of course."

Roark took a safety helmet from a nearby rack and handed it to Mike.

Mike put it on.

Glameow took one look at the ugly helmet and absolutely refused to wear one, so she returned to her Poké Ball instead.

Gengar, meanwhile, once again produced his professional mining equipment.

"Looks like Gengar is an experienced miner," Roark remarked as he watched him sling an iron pickaxe over his shoulder.

Gengar puffed out his chest proudly.

[Of course! Who do you think I am?!]

Mike bent down and gently placed a safety helmet on Snivy’s head before pinching her little cheeks.

"You look great."

After helping Beedrill put on a helmet as well, Mike followed Roark into the mine.

"To tell you the truth, we really have uncovered several ancient fossils in this mine," Roark said while leading the way.

"Really?"

Mike asked with apparent surprise.

Of course, he already knew that fossils had been discovered in Oreburgh Mine since he had seen it in the anime.
