Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Ancient Plants

A/N:1/6 Bonus Chapters

Julian smiled and said, "As long as it can make Goodra happy, it’ll be worth it no matter how much effort it takes."

Professor Rowan nodded.

"Come with me. I remember those books."

In Professor Rowan’s lab library, there were only three books left concerning Pokémon from the Hisui era, and all three were incomplete.

Professor Rowan said, "People from that era didn’t know anything about region-specific ancient forms, so they didn’t distinguish them. You’ll need to judge based on the descriptions."

"Because the era was different, their understanding of Pokémon also differed. Add to that the way ancient writing has changed over time, and even if you find records of Goodra that lived in ancient Sinnoh..."

"The habits recorded in the books may still be wrong. You’ll need to carefully identify what is reliable."

"Take your time."

Julian nodded.

"Thank you, Professor. I only want to understand what Goodra ate in ancient times before I go into the mountains to search."

Unfortunately, none of the three books mentioned any Pokémon that seemed to be Goodra.

However, regarding the ancient Great Marsh, one of the books happened to preserve a passage describing the wetland environment.

It mentioned that a type of red aquatic plant grew in the Great Marsh, and the nearby Pokémon all liked eating the fruit of this plant.

Goodra was likely no exception.

Now the only question was whether this ancient aquatic plant still grew deep in Mt. Coronet.

Mt. Coronet was vast. Perhaps there really was a stream valley somewhere inside it with an environment similar to the ancient Great Marsh.

If birds had helped transport the seeds, then maybe it truly existed in the mountain.

Julian found Professor Rowan’s chief assistant, Yuzo.

"Yuzo, you often follow Professor Rowan deep into Mt. Coronet to research Pokémon. Have you ever seen the red aquatic plant described in this book?"

There was no picture.

Only three characteristics.

Red, aquatic, and fruit-bearing.

Yuzo stroked his chin.

"There are indeed stream valleys in Mt. Coronet that resemble the Great Marsh, but whether they have this plant, I really haven’t noticed."

"But I heard that Celestic Town has an ancient plant garden that specialises in researching ancient plants. Perhaps you can look there."

"That plant garden seems to have originally been the garden of an ancient noble family. Many rare plants were already growing there."

"After it was formally established as an ancient plant cultivation garden seventy years ago, many more species were added. It should be able to find what you want."

"The current director of the garden is Professor Carolina. If you take this book and ask Professor Carolina, you may get the answer you want."

"In any case, it’s more reliable than searching through the deep forests of Mt. Coronet."

Right. He should visit Professor Carolina, who researched ancient history.

And Cassia happened to work at Professor Carolina’s research institute.

He could go and see her.

If even the ancient plant cultivation garden did not have the aquatic fruit Goodra liked, he could enter the mountains afterwards.

Julian nodded.

"That really is a good idea."

Just then, the fierce sound of battle and explosions came from outside the door.

There was also a loud monkey cry.

Unless something unexpected had happened, Primeape had probably started fighting Infernape.

Yuzo smiled and said, "Ever since your Primeape defeated them last time, Infernape and the others have reignited their enthusiasm for training."

"In the past, we could only find seven or eight Chimchar Eggs in an entire year. But it’s only April, and we’ve already found five."

"Four Turtwig Eggs and six Piplup Eggs too."

Julian also smiled.

"It looks like increasing their exercise has increased the number of Eggs produced too."

"I’ll go and take a look. We can’t let their fighting disturb the Professor’s research."

After they arrived at Professor Rowan’s lab, Primeape had jumped out of his Poké Ball by himself.

There had been no stopping him.

Julian had clearly told him to go battle somewhere farther away from the lab.

In the end, he had still caused such a huge commotion.

When he arrived in the backyard, Primeape and Infernape’s battle had already ended.

Unsurprisingly, Infernape had lost again, and the battling Pokémon had changed to Hakamo-o and Torterra.

Paul was watching the battle seriously, while Maylene was chattering away and clapping enthusiastically.

At some unknown point, a small red monkey had appeared on Maylene’s shoulder and was cheerfully cheering together with her.

Julian stepped forward and asked, "Where did this Chimchar come from?"

Maylene stroked Chimchar’s head and said, "I don’t know. He suddenly jumped out, climbed onto my shoulder, and refused to come down."

Paul smiled and said, "Maybe Chimchar thinks she’s one of his own kind."

Maylene glared at him.

"You’re the monkey!"

Torterra endured Hakamo-o’s Dragon Claw, then opened his mouth and fired an Energy Ball, sending Hakamo-o flying.

Paul’s eyes lit up.

Nice move.

The damage just was not enough.

After his dragon scales transformed once, Hakamo-o’s defense had become even more outstanding.

When Energy Ball struck him, it basically left him unharmed.

But Paul could see that Torterra used Energy Ball very well.

Seeing the look in his eyes, Julian said, "After the battle ends, you can take Turtwig to ask Torterra for advice. Torterra has a very good temperament and won’t refuse your request."

Paul nodded.

"All right."

Julian walked over to Infernape and Primeape, took out a Potion, and sprayed Infernape first.

Infernape almost jumped up.

"You didn’t feel pain during the battle."

"But now that I spray a little medicine, you’re hurting so much you’re about to jump?"

Infernape was somewhat embarrassed. When Julian sprayed the medicine again, he kept a stiff face until the treatment ended, then secretly let out a breath of relief.

Primeape wanted to show his toughness, but when the Potion touched his wound, he also almost jumped up.

Hakamo-o and Torterra’s battle ended as well, with Hakamo-o winning.

The final battle was Sirfetch’d against Empoleon.

Julian sprayed medicine for Torterra and smiled.

"Torterra, your Energy Ball was excellent! This younger friend of mine and his Turtwig want to ask you for advice."

Torterra directly nodded in agreement.

Julian waved.

"Paul, come over quickly."

Sirfetch’d and Empoleon’s battle ended with Sirfetch’d’s Meteor Assault.

At some point, Yuzo had come outside and was smiling as he clapped.

"Impressive. Three battles, three wins. Looks like you’re doing very well as a Gym Leader."

Yuzo also saw the Chimchar on Maylene’s shoulder.

"I didn’t expect this little guy to like you so much. I’ll speak to the Professor. We might as well let you take him with you."

Maylene blinked.

"Is that really all right?"

Yuzo nodded.

"Recently, we’ve had quite a lot of newly hatched starter Pokémon, but not enough suitable new Trainers. The ones that hatched around the same time as Chimchar have all been chosen."

"If he stays alone in the lab, he’ll definitely feel lonely."

After Professor Rowan learned about it, he agreed directly and even generously said, "The Pokémon you two catch can all be transferred to this lab for temporary care."

"When you return to Sinnoh, you can choose whether to transfer them back to your hometown."

Maylene revealed a sweet smile.

"Thank you, Professor!"

During a free moment, Julian took out his phone and called Cassia.

"Cassia, how have you been recently?"

"Pretty good. What about you?"

"I’ve been good too. There’s something I need to go to Celestic Town for, so I wanted to ask whether you’re at the research institute."

Cynthia suddenly shot to her feet, her voice unconsciously growing louder.

"You’re going to Celestic Town?"

"Yes. Are you there?"

Cynthia hurriedly said, "I’m working outside, but my friend is home. I’ll have my friend pick you up."
