Chapter 202: Chapter 202: Turning the Tables

A/N:1/10 Bonus Chapters

-----------------------

Disbelief flashed in Phil’s eyes.

This Electabuzz had not been there the last time he came. It was obviously a Pokémon Gym Leader Julian had caught recently.

Why was a newly caught Electabuzz this strong?

His Stantler had experienced countless battles. During the fight for his seventh Badge, Stantler had played an important role.

So why was it that the moment they came to Veilstone Gym, he could not even beat an Electabuzz Julian had not caught that long ago?

If Phil knew that after catching Electabuzz, Julian had merely bought him a generator and arranged for Machamp to take him through muscle training...

And that after only training Electabuzz for a couple of days, Julian had gone off to adventure in the Great Crater of Paldea...

Phil would probably collapse even further.

But even without Julian personally guiding him, the treatment at Veilstone Gym was many times better than Electabuzz training alone in the wild.

Julian’s training plan strengthened Electabuzz in both body and energy.

There was also Machamp, a Fighting-type master, giving him one-on-one expert guidance.

In a short time, Electabuzz had already been transformed.

Phil refused to believe it.

"Stantler, Double-Edge!"

Electabuzz was somewhat stubborn. He liked relying on power to clash head-on with opponents.

Facing Double-Edge, lightning began flickering across Electabuzz’s body.

Julian nodded slightly.

"Go. Wild Charge!"

Stantler became ruthless, pouring out all the strength he had worked so hard to gather during this period.

Electabuzz also wanted to display the results of his training.

If he could not even take down a Stantler, how was he supposed to survive in Veilstone Gym?

Julian’s eyes lit up.

Stantler really had become different.

Just through Stantler, he could see Phil’s growth over the past few months.

But what amazed Julian even more was Electabuzz’s growth.

Living alone in the mountains, Electabuzz had been able to create such a large orchard.

That alone was enough to show Electabuzz’s intelligence.

Aside from liking head-on collisions, Electabuzz had no real faults.

Although it was a frontal clash, Electabuzz’s entry angle was excellent.

He fully poured Wild Charge’s damage into Stantler.

At the same time, Electabuzz used the force-dispersing technique Machamp had taught him to reduce the impact from Double-Edge and the recoil from Wild Charge.

Insufficient strength could be trained.

But this kind of battle intuition was difficult to improve through training.

In his desire to win, Stantler used too much force, instead causing his stamina to drain sharply.

It was over.

Julian spoke calmly.

"Quick Attack!"

Electabuzz charged quickly and punched the panting Stantler in the face.

Stantler’s last bit of stamina was squeezed dry, and he collapsed to the ground.

Phil’s eyes widened.

"No, I..."

He had used a Normal-type Stantler.

Yet it had been defeated by Electabuzz’s Normal-type Quick Attack.

What was this?

Julian began giving advice.

"Phil, I know you really want to win. But during battle, you need the patience to think about how to fight."

"You were too impatient. That’s why you lost the first match so quickly."

Phil felt somewhat ashamed.

"I understand, Gym Leader Julian. In the next battle, I’ll be more aware, and give it everything I have."

"Go, Bronzong!"

Julian raised an eyebrow.

So the Bronzor that had been defeated by Croagunk’s combination last time had evolved.

"Bulk Up."

Electabuzz had learned Veilstone Gym’s signature move quite well.

Phil hurriedly ordered Bronzong to attack.

"Bronzong, Gyro Ball!"

Electabuzz moved smoothly and quickly completed one Bulk Up boost.

Bronzong began spinning at high speed. Its two arms shone with silver light, forming rings as it charged towards Electabuzz with imposing momentum.

Bronzong was much stronger than Stantler. Phil had invested considerable effort into evolving Bronzor into Bronzong.

"Quick Attack. Strike upward from below."

Bronzong was very good, but it had one weakness: the inside of its bell.

Phil’s Bronzong was hovering too high above the ground.

The opening it exposed was too large.

Electabuzz lowered his body and nimbly slipped inside Bronzong’s bell.

Then he fiercely punched upward.

Electabuzz gritted his teeth.

Feel the strength I’ve built by tearing and rebuilding my muscles again and again!

His wild arms directly pushed Bronzong into the sky.

"Earthquake!"

Bronzong smashed heavily into the ground, sending powerful seismic waves through the battlefield.

Electabuzz groaned, stubbornly standing and refusing to fall.

"Psychic!"

A powerful psychic force struck Electabuzz’s body. No matter how unwilling Electabuzz was, he was still defeated by Bronzong.

Phil let out a breath of relief.

Compared to last time, he had at least defeated one Electabuzz.

As long as he kept working hard, taking the Cobble Badge would not be a problem.

Come on. I can do this!

Julian took out a Poké Ball and recalled the defeated Electabuzz.

He said gently, "This was your first Gym battle. You already performed very well."

Then he threw out another Poké Ball.

"Go, Combusken."

Electabuzz had already defeated one opponent. Combusken naturally believed his performance could not be worse than Electabuzz’s.

His gaze burned as he waited for Julian’s command.

"Bronzong, Rain Dance!"

Not bad. He could even use Rain Dance

"Flamethrower. Scatter Rain Dance!"

A mouthful of scorching flames erupted, striking the light Bronzong had condensed directly.

Seeing the light scattered by Flamethrower, Phil was instantly dumbfounded.

You can do that?

He had seen Trainers use Sunny Day to replace Rain Dance.

But this was the first time he had seen someone interrupt it with Flamethrower.

Combusken was a prized student of Poliwrath.

And Poliwrath was not only fast at swimming.

The principle he believed in was speed, accuracy, and ruthlessness!

Long-range moves like Flamethrower and Hydro Pump had to be fast in order to be accurate.

It was like being hit by a fist. If the enemy was unprepared, it hurt more than if they were ready.

This did not only apply to physical attacks. Energy attacks were the same.

When the enemy had not raised their defence, the damage would be much higher.

"Flame Charge!"

Seeing Combusken charge, Phil hurriedly shouted, "Safeguard!"

A green film quickly appeared over Bronzong’s body.

Combusken slammed into it and was instead bounced back.

Julian raised an eyebrow.

Safeguard did more than prevent status conditions. It could also resist an opponent’s attacks.

Just like how some moves that removed status conditions could also be used to restore a Pokémon’s stamina.

Combusken refused to accept it and charged again.

This time, Bronzong directly waved a hand and slapped Combusken back.

Combusken’s eyes widened.

Bronzong actually dared slap him across the face!

Not even his master had ever hit his face!

In an instant, red flames wrapped around Combusken’s body.

Phil’s heart jumped.

Why had Combusken suddenly activated Blaze?

Could Bronzong’s slap really have done that much damage?

Combusken raised his head and cried out as scorching flames burned around him.

"Psychic!"

Powerful flames propelled Combusken forward, allowing him to break free bit by bit from Psychic’s restraint.

Phil was somewhat numb.

"This... how is that Flare Blitz?"

His Infernape had already learned Flare Blitz.

But Phil had never expected that one day, his own Pokémon would end up guiding Julian, the famous potential-unlocking expert, into having Combusken learn Flare Blitz.

How had he become the teaching prop?

This isn’t right!

This is completely backwards!

Phil hurriedly shouted, "Bronzong, hold on! I believe in you!"

Bronzong bloomed with blue light, and stronger psychic power enveloped Combusken.

Julian shouted as well.

"Combusken, set your heart ablaze!" (A/N: R.I.P Rengoku)
