Chapter 274: Chapter 274: Miracle Mentor!

A/N:2/9 Bonus Chapters

-----------------------

Julian was just about to go over and treat the pair when a Trumbeak rushed out from the canopy.

Its sharp beak shone as it stabbed wildly at Hakamo-o’s dragon scales.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Five crisp rings showed that this Trumbeak was far from ordinary.

Cynthia’s eyes showed appreciation.

"This bird Pokémon knows Hakamo-o’s dragon-scale defence is excellent, so every attack is aimed at the same point."

Julian nodded.

"Trumbeak is quite strong. And it’s using Rock Smash."

After five consecutive pecks, Julian felt this Trumbeak probably had the Skill Link Ability.

In reality, Skill Link was not only useful when using moves that randomly hit two to five times.

When a Pokémon with this Ability repeatedly used the same move, the motion became smoother, and the power also rose somewhat.

Although Trumbeak had not pierced Hakamo-o’s dragon scales, he had left a dent in them.

Hakamo-o swung his Dragon Claw forward, but Trumbeak twisted nimbly and slipped behind Hakamo-o.

Hakamo-o revealed an appreciative look.

This Trumbeak had more promise than his parents.

On the branches, seven or eight Pikipek poked out their heads, chirping to cheer their big brother on.

Julian smiled.

"Trumbeak, I only wanted to treat them. I mean no harm."

Trumbeak’s expression was serious.

Of course he knew Julian had no ill intentions.

Trumbeak had rushed out simply because Hakamo-o was strong.

And so, Trumbeak wanted to battle Hakamo-o.

Sensing the fierce fighting spirit in Trumbeak’s eyes, Julian nodded.

"Hakamo-o, use Dragon Breath!"

Since Trumbeak wanted to battle, then he could experience the strength Hakamo-o had trained through Veilstone Gym’s hellish training!

A purple breath of dragon energy shot out, its speed far exceeding Trumbeak’s imagination.

That Dragon Claw that had slapped at him earlier had not used full strength at all.

When Hakamo-o had battled Toucannon, he had always acted after the opponent but arrived first.

That had given Trumbeak the mistaken impression that Hakamo-o was good at defensive counterattacks and was not especially fast.

Now that Hakamo-o spat out a full-power Dragon Breath, it struck Trumbeak directly before he could dodge.

The powerful impact knocked Trumbeak straight to the ground.

His body was also paralysed by Dragon Breath, leaving him almost unable to move.

The Pikipek cried out one after another, cheering Trumbeak on.

"Trum!"

Trumbeak shouted fiercely. With stubborn fighting spirit, he supported his paralysed body and flapped his wings, flying into the sky once more.

After flying up, Trumbeak suddenly folded his wings.

His sharp beak pointed towards Hakamo-o, then he spread his wings violently.

His body first ignited with red flames, then transformed into blue energy.

Julian smiled slightly.

"Hakamo-o, Outrage!"

Purple flames of energy burst from Hakamo-o’s body. His powerful presence made Trumbeak’s attack, currently using Brave Bird, falter for a moment.

Cynthia was somewhat surprised.

"Brave Bird? A newly mastered move? Julian, you really are the miracle mentor, aren’t you?"

The corner of Julian’s mouth twitched.

How did even Cynthia know about that nickname?

Julian sighed helplessly.

"This is clearly Trumbeak’s training finally paying off. Hakamo-o just happened to trigger his potential."

Cynthia nodded.

"Exactly. Isn’t that what the nickname means?"

Trainers battled every day, but not everyone could draw out the hidden potential inside their opponent’s Pokémon.

Wasn’t Julian called the Miracle Mentor precisely because opponents were more likely to unlock their potential when facing him?

Julian: "..."

Why was this impossible to explain?

Hakamo-o pushed both hands forward, and Trumbeak’s Brave Bird was directly scattered.

After landing on the ground with only a trace of stamina left, Trumbeak finally realised what a truly powerful Pokémon looked like.

They were both Hakamo-o, but Trumbeak felt this Hakamo-o could fight ten Hakamo-o from Poni Canyon.

Those guys seemed to battle every day, but their actual battling level was ordinary.

They completely lacked the pressure of Julian’s Hakamo-o.

A passionate light flashed in Trumbeak’s eyes.

He also had to work hard and become strong, striving to become as powerful as Hakamo-o!

No.

He had to become even stronger than this Hakamo-o!

Then he fainted.

Julian first applied medicine to the two Toucannon and Trumbeak, waking them up, then prepared Pokémon food for them.

This time, it was not Hakamo-o’s.

It was Sirfetch’d’s food.

Hakamo-o secretly let out a breath of relief.

When Trumbeak tasted it, his eyes immediately lit up.

So this is the food humans prepare for their Pokémon?

The flavour was amazing~

"Then we’ll be taking our leave."

It was getting late. If Julian kept communicating and building friendship with the Pokémon testing him after every stage like this, he felt the time needed to complete the trial might be even longer than Sofu had estimated.

The two continued forward and arrived in a lonely mountain forest.

"Hoo, hoo" sounds occasionally rang from around them.

Then came the rustling of leaves.

Julian smiled.

"The Pokémon living here are quite interesting. They’re actually using this method to scare us."

Hakamo-o watched in all directions and listened carefully, trying to find the hidden Pokémon.

Julian did not use Aura, intending to test Hakamo-o’s observational ability.

Hakamo-o suddenly spat Dragon Breath towards the dense canopy of a tree.

Leaves flew everywhere.

At the same time, a large bird flew out from the canopy.

Looking at the large bird in the sky, Hakamo-o showed surprise.

"Decidueye!"

Cynthia carefully observed Alola’s Decidueye.

"It really is different from the Hisuian Decidueye."

Julian nodded.

"Hisuian Decidueye is Fighting type. Alolan Decidueye is Ghost type."

Hakamo-o directly swung Dragon Claw and leapt towards the sky.

Decidueye was startled and immediately beat his wings, climbing higher.

He avoided Hakamo-o’s attempt to tear into his chest.

Then he grabbed a feather, condensed Ghost energy, and shot it down towards the falling Hakamo-o.

Hakamo-o raised his arm and used his dragon scales to block the arrow.

Hakamo-o frowned slightly.

This Decidueye’s arrow did not have carry much power.

It could not even pierce his dragon scales.

But it seemed as if some kind of energy had passed through the scales and seeped into his body.

After Hakamo-o landed, he immediately felt his body grow somewhat heavy.

It was like someone was dragging his legs from behind, preventing him from moving.

Julian explained, "That’s Decidueye’s signature move, Spirit Shackle. It has the effect of pinning the opponent’s shadow."

"That’s why your body feels heavy and movement has become difficult."

Hakamo-o smiled slightly.

As expected of Decidueye. They really did all have their own unique skills.

Hakamo-o said no more and directly activated Outrage, charging forward.

Decidueye’s eyes widened.

I only shot you once with Spirit Shackle. Is there really any need to immediately use Outrage?

Hakamo-o clawed forward, and Decidueye flapped his wings to dodge.

But the trunk of a large tree was directly shattered by Hakamo-o’s claws.

Decidueye let out a sharp cry, and his body lit up with emerald-green light.

His Overgrow Ability had been scared out of him!

Cynthia pointed at Decidueye.

"Julian, and you still say you don’t have a golden touch!!"
