[Randomly selecting simulated Pokémon]

[Random result: Caterpie]
[Beginning simulation]
Caterpie...
What a nostalgic Pokémon.
Julian closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, he had become a bug.
"Cater."
The place Caterpie occupied was a bush. With the bush as cover, it was still fairly safe.
[Caterpie]

[Special Defense: 20]

[Available moves:String Shot 1.5, Tackle 40, Bug Bite 60]
Caterpie had three moves: String Shot, Tackle, and Bug Bite.
Tackle and Bug Bite had clearly not been trained at all. And with Caterpie’s weak body, who could he beat?
This time, there was only one strategy.
Survive.
He had to make good use of String Shot.
Also, Caterpie evolved at level 7. He was already level 6, so he had to eat enough food before evolving.
Metapod could not eat. It had to rely on the nutrients accumulated during the Caterpie stage to sustain its growth. Otherwise, it would not have the strength to break out of the cocoon and become a butterfly.
Caterpie carefully poked his head out of the bush and observed the surrounding environment.
This was a forest.
And to Julian’s delight, among the nearby trees, there was actually a maple tree.
The kind that produced maple syrup, attracting large numbers of Bug-type Pokémon to feed and filling their stomachs.
Did becoming a Bug-type Caterpie really lower the difficulty this much?
There was not a single Bug-type Pokémon visible on the maple tree.
Is it a trap?
Forget it.
People died for money.
Bugs died for food.
Go and take a look.
Julian did not crawl directly to the maple tree. Instead, he climbed the tree closest to the bush first and observed the area.
Only after confirming there were no bird Pokémon nearby did he crawl towards the maple tree.
Clinging to the trunk, he carefully bit open a small hole and greedily sucked the sweet maple syrup.
After drinking his fill, Julian looked at the opening he had bitten into and had an idea.
He spat silk over the maple tree’s wound, wrapping it up to prevent the scent of syrup from spreading.
Then he climbed to the top of the maple tree and sprayed silk towards the surrounding trees, weaving a web.
He created the impression that the Pokémon living here was Ariados.
Compared to Caterpie, which birds could slaughter at will, Ariados, which could catch small bird Pokémon, had a certain deterrent effect.
That should allow Caterpie to occupy the maple tree more safely.
With maple syrup to fill his stomach, Caterpie did not have to care about the consumption of silk.
Covering the surrounding trees in silk really was tiring.
His stomach, which had just been filled, felt hungry again.
Caterpie crawled back to the maple tree trunk and drank his fill of syrup once more.
After wrapping the wound again, he returned to the bush nest to sleep.
Night was about to fall.
Predators would soon appear.
Compared to the treetops, where bird Pokémon could easily land, bushes were still more suitable for bugs.
After night fell, the forest that had been quiet during the day became lively.
Bird cries, insect calls, and constant fighting filled the air.
Judging by the sounds, the place where the two sides were battling was fairly far from Caterpie’s birthplace.
Julian had no curiosity at all.
He continued sleeping in the bush.
When he woke, dawn was about to arrive.
Caterpie had also reached level 7, but he had not evolved.
This was the darkest time of night.
Julian planned to go and drink another full meal of maple syrup.
He poked his head out of the bush.
The web he had set up yesterday was completely intact.
No danger. Time to move
After drinking his fill of maple syrup, he added more silk high and low among the surrounding trees, strengthening the defence of the area.
It also counted as one of the few forms of exercise Caterpie could perform.
These peaceful days continued for two days.
After another full meal of maple syrup and returning to the bush, Julian felt Caterpie’s level-8 body become swollen.
Finally.
Evolution had begun.
With a burst of white light, he became a Metapod, completely unable to move.
His level also rose to 9.
The only moves he could use now were Harden and Tackle.
In truth, if Metapod was trained, it could also battle.
But that was Bugsy of Azalea Gym’s Metapod.
Julian, as a wild Metapod, could only lie there.
Fortunately, the maple syrup had allowed him to accumulate enough nutrients to wait for his cells to transform.
From level 9, he waited until level 10, level 11, level 12, and level 13.
Seven whole days passed in that dull manner.
Julian finally felt that swelling sensation in Metapod’s body again.
As Metapod’s shell cracked, rich white light poured out from within.
A beautiful butterfly spread its wings and flew out of the shell.
"Free."
Butterfree had arrived.
Six new moves were added: Gust, Supersonic, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Poison Powder, and Confusion.
The Caterpie-stage moves, String Shot and Bug Bite, also returned.
Even at level 14, Butterfree was still weak.
Julian’s strategy remained unchanged.
Every day, he used String Shot to expand the area of forest covered by his web.
When hungry, he drank maple syrup.
When tired, he slept in the nest he had woven with silk at the top of the maple tree.
But the maple tree’s syrup production was decreasing.
Even its leaves looked somewhat wilted.
Julian tried the sap from other trees, but it tasted bad and lacked nutrients.
He could only stop feeding from the scar-covered maple tree.
Flapping his wings, he flew in the direction away from the nightly struggle between bugs and birds, searching for a new food source.
His luck was good.
Julian found another maple tree.
Just as he was about to fly over and drink the maple syrup, a string of Poison Sting shot down from the treetop.
Butterfree spun and dodged the needles, then flapped his wings, blowing a cloud of Stun Spore towards the maple tree.
A Beedrill rushed out from the treetop with both needles raised.
It was struck by Stun Spore and fell stiffly to the ground.
Butterfree immediately used Confusion, invading Beedrill’s body wildly.
Weedle, Kakuna, and Beedrill were extremely united Pokémon.
If there was one Beedrill, there was a swarm of Beedrill.
If he let this one go, it would bring back more Beedrill and kill Butterfree.
The law of the jungle.
You die, or I die.
After strangling Beedrill, Butterfree rose from level 14 to level 16.
Then he lay on the maple tree and drank his fill of maple syrup.
He wrapped Beedrill in silk and brought it back near his territory to eat for dinner.
Compared to maple syrup, Beedrill clearly contained more complete nutrition for Butterfree’s growth.
After eating Beedrill, Butterfree reached level 17.
The next day, Butterfree carefully came near Beedrill’s maple tree again.
Another Beedrill had appeared there to collect maple syrup.
Butterfree hid behind the treetop and lightly stirred the air, sending Sleep Powder drifting over.
Beedrill wobbled and fell to the ground.
Once again, Butterfree used Confusion to strangle Beedrill, drank his fill of maple syrup, and brought Beedrill back.
Butterfree rose to level 19.
In the following days, Butterfree developed a routine.
Every day, he went to that maple tree.
Sometimes there was no Beedrill, so he stayed there, drank two meals of maple syrup, and returned home in the evening.
Before and after, Butterfree ate thirteen Beedrill in total.
Thanks to Beedrill, Butterfree learned the Psychic-type move Psybeam.
Three days passed without another Beedrill appearing.
The maple syrup production had also dropped severely. He had to stop feeding from it for a while and wait for the tree to recover.
Now level 26, Butterfree continued forward in search of food and prey.
Through continuous practice, Butterfree had already developed Gust into Air Cutter.
With the three powders, Psybeam, and Air Cutter, Butterfree now had a certain ability to protect himself.
Not long after continuing forward, Butterfree heard a familiar Caterpie cry.
He flew over to look.
It turned out to be an evil Beedrill chasing two poor Caterpie.
Could Butterfree tolerate that?
He had just learned Air Cutter.
A storm of wind blades immediately slashed down towards Beedrill.
