Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Croagunk’s Resolve

A/N: 1/2 Bonus Chapters

-----------------------

After the third round ended, it was already half past eleven.

The stadium restaurant opened, and all participating contestants could go there to eat.

Of course, contestants eliminated in the third round could enter the revival bracket.

The afternoon matches needed to gather sixty-four contestants, and the groups would be redrawn.

Maylene had also successfully made it into the fourth round.

The siblings happily went to the restaurant to eat the buffet jointly provided by Veilstone Department Store and the Veilstone City government.

The two of them took a great deal of food, piling it up on the table like a small mountain.

The Trainers around them saw Julian with his pink hair and martial arts uniform, and one after another, they whispered and discussed him with their companions.

It was not because they thought the siblings ate too much.

They were discussing Julian’s strength.

After this battle, Julian and Primeape had become famous in one fight.

All the contestants knew that Veilstone Gym’s provisional Leader was a skilled Trainer.

His Primeape had actually one-shot the ace Charizard of Tiger, an elite Trainer with seven Badges.

The Trainers about to participate in the fourth round all hoped they would not run into Julian in the upcoming matches.

The Trainers who had already been eliminated were discussing how long Julian’s next opponent could last against him.

They were also discussing which of the two Pokémon Julian had revealed, Hakamo-o and Primeape, was stronger.

And whether Julian still had an even stronger Pokémon hidden away.

A Trainer who knew computer skills searched the Sinnoh League’s official website and discovered that on Veilstone Gym’s page, provisional Leader Julian Veyne had six Pokémon registered.

Among them, there was actually a Torchic, which seemed to suggest that Julian... was not as strong as everyone imagined?

But Julian also had a Gallade.

That had to be guarded against.

In the afternoon, the format changed to two-on-two.

Just Hakamo-o and Primeape appearing together already made some of the remaining Trainers feel enormous pressure.

But another portion of Trainers believed that facing a strong Trainer like Julian was exactly what made it interesting.

Julian’s Pokémon were powerful, but it was not as if their Pokémon were weak.

They wanted to ask Julian one thing.

Was he afraid of them?

Julian did not care what these Trainers were thinking.

The stadium’s buffet tasted great, and he planned to eat more.

"Hurry and eat. After eating, we’ll go home and feed the Pokémon. The afternoon matches don’t start until two, so we can still take a nap."

The siblings cleared seven or eight full plates of food twice over and ate eight plates of rice.

Only then did they return to Veilstone Gym satisfied.

Maylene was somewhat surprised.

"Julian, why do I feel like you can eat even more than me now?"

"Your brother has been having a second growth spurt recently, so naturally I can eat a little more. As for you, I’m worried whether you’ll even be able to eat enough when you go travelling."

Julian nodded to himself.

He had to buy Maylene the largest capacity spatial backpack and have her carry at least three days’ worth of food.

"Remember, walk along the main roads as much as possible. I’m afraid you’ll starve to death in the forest. If things really get bad, tender bark and tree roots can be dug out and eaten too."

Maylene rolled her eyes.

"I won’t fall to that level."

Julian released his six Pokémon.

Torchic was the first to run to his food tray, bouncing up and down while waiting for food.

Primeape began describing how it had knocked down Charizard with one punch earlier.

Croagunk puffed up his poison sacs, and a dangerous glint flashed through his eyes.

He also wanted to go on stage.

Croagunk looked at his palm and made a decision.

After food was served, Croagunk did not eat. Instead, he found Julian.

"What’s wrong, Croagunk? Is there something wrong with today’s food?"

Croagunk shook his head and looked at Julian with firm eyes.

"Croa, croa!"

Julian also nodded.

"I see. I understand!"

"Then I’ll leave the afternoon match to you, Croagunk. Now go eat."

Croagunk nodded, returned to his spot, grabbed Pokémon food, and stuffed it into his mouth.

The killing intent in his eyes became even more intense.

Beside him, a drop of cold sweat slid down Farfetch’d’s forehead.

Normally, eating beside Croagunk already made the duck feel somewhat uncomfortable.

The current Croagunk felt extremely dangerous to Farfetch’d.

Even Torchic, who was single-mindedly focused on eating, used its head to push its food bowl farther away from Croagunk.

Julian’s eyes shone.

Croagunk’s eyes were pretty good.

It looked like he could safely leave the afternoon match to Croagunk.

Croagunk’s state made Primeape glance sideways.

If not for the match in the afternoon, Primeape really wanted to fight Croagunk in this condition.

After eating, Croagunk ran to the training room by himself and began practising the moves he commonly used.

Julian watched Croagunk use all his moves twice before stepping forward.

"Stop. This much warm-up is enough. Save the rest of your energy for the afternoon battle."

Croagunk nodded and returned to his Poké Ball to rest.

The siblings arrived at the stadium and found that even more spectators had come to watch the afternoon matches.

Everyone knew that after the screening from the morning matches, the afternoon battles would be even more exciting.

After the group list came out, the spectators began studying which matches were worth watching.

Julian Veyne against Chris.

"Chris? I know him. He’s a Trainer who once participated in the Ever Grande Conference. I didn’t expect him to face Julian this early. Shall we go watch this match?"

The girlfriend beside him did not understand.

"Is this Julian very strong too?"

The boyfriend nodded.

"He’s our Veilstone City provisional Gym Leader. How could he not be strong?"

The boyfriend pointed.

"Look, that’s Julian."

The girlfriend looked over.

A handsome man with a pink high ponytail and a warm smile passed through the crowd and entered the players’ lounge.

That smile was like a spring breeze blowing into a young girl’s heart.

The girl said excitedly, "So handsome. Now we have to watch it!"

The fourth round began.

Julian’s match was placed as the opener.

"I finally made it. I hope this match lets me enjoy myself properly."

"Chris is a regional conference contestant. His strength is extraordinary. Julian might even lose this match."

"Exactly. Fighting type is too easy to counter. Personally, I don’t think Julian will win the championship."

On the battlefield, Julian took out a Poké Ball.

"Croagunk, battle!"

Across from him, Chris narrowed his eyes slightly, looking somewhat lazy.

"Ampharos, I’ll leave this to you."

Ampharos entered the field.

Seeing Croagunk’s murderous eyes, it immediately shivered.

The referee waved the flag.

"The match begins!"

"Charge Beam!"

"Block it with Mud-Slap!"

A lump of mud flew out and blocked Charge Beam halfway.

Another lump of mud swiftly flew in front of Ampharos.

Ampharos raised its hand to block, but mud still smeared across its face.

Just as it was about to wipe its face, it heard its Trainer’s warning.

"Discharge!"

Croagunk rapidly closed in, endured the electric current, and stabbed his palm, glowing with dangerous purple light, into Ampharos’s abdomen, injecting poison.

Ampharos screamed in pain, and its face flushed a deep purple.

Chris gritted his teeth.

Damn it

"Grab it! Thunderbolt!"

Julian had taught Croagunk to use the attacking method of Poison Sting to inject Toxic.

He relied on physical force to cause a certain amount of damage, using pain to better pour in the poison.

Ampharos grabbed Croagunk and released an even stronger electric current.

Croagunk grinned.

He did not try to break free.

Instead, both his hands lit up with purple light.

Infinite Poison Sting combo!

Ampharos’s pained cries grew weaker and weaker.

Several obvious purple marks appeared on its abdomen, and it collapsed to the ground.

Chris’s expression was ugly.

He had not expected Ampharos to fall because of an unremarkable Mud-Slap.

Was this the curse of Ground type against Electric type?

However...

Chris looked at Croagunk and slowly opened his eyes.

This guy was ruthless to his enemies.

And even more ruthless to himself.

In the audience seats:

"What a terrifying Croagunk. It endured Thunderbolt head-on and used Poison Sting to bring down Ampharos."

"Besides Hakamo-o and Primeape, Croagunk is also a fierce warrior. Three Pokémon, each with their own characteristics. Looks like Julian is a master at raising Pokémon!"
