Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Champion

A/N:3/3 Bonus Chapters

-----------------------

Nina revealed a silly smile.

If she could enter Veilstone Gym and collect comprehensive data on Primeape, then could she also collect Gallade and Hakamo-o’s data?

And being in the same room as a handsome guy like Julian could never be a loss.

Looking at Nina’s smile, Maylene felt that something was a little strange.

"Miss Nina, are you all right?"

Nina hurriedly waved her hands.

"I’m fine. I just think Primeape has a lot of research value, so I got a little too happy."

The uncle had seen enough of life to understand. He teased, "Is it the Pokémon that has value, or the person?"

Nina instantly restrained herself and returned to her originally quiet, cool temperament.

"I don’t understand what you’re talking about."

In the semi-finals, Julian’s opponent was a girl with a scholarly air.

As usual, Nina introduced her to everyone.

"Millie, librarian at Canalave Library. She specialises in Normal types, and uses cute Pokémon like Wigglytuff and Delcatty."

"But you absolutely shouldn’t ignore their powerful combat ability just because of their appearance."

Millie smiled softly.

"Wigglytuff, take the stage."

Letting Primeape go up against a girl seemed a little too cruel.

Croagunk was not suitable either.

"Hakamo-o, I’ll leave this to you!"

"Wigglytuff, fly up!"

Wigglytuff took a deep breath and immediately flew into the sky.

"Headbutt. Knock her down."

The Dragon-type jumped up to attack, but unexpectedly, Wigglytuff expelled the air inside her body.

Like a balloon suddenly deflating, she skillfully avoided the move.

Then she suddenly took another breath and flew into the sky again, even higher this time.

"Blizzard!"

Julian smiled.

"Brick Break!"

Wigglytuff blew out wind and snow, expelling all the air in her stomach, and her body was blown high into the sky.

Millie thought to herself that with Blizzard in front and Wigglytuff flying so high, Hakamo-o definitely would not be able to see her.

Unexpectedly, inside the blizzard, Hakamo-o bent his knees and leapt like a cannonball, appearing before Wigglytuff and chopping her down with one claw.

Millie’s face was full of shock.

"What!"

That was more than ten metres in the air!

Why was Hakamo-o’s jumping ability so outstanding?

Of course, it was because of the Lagging Tail.

In fact, aside from the Lagging Tail, Hakamo-o also wore extra weights while training.

The Lagging Tail’s effect of suppressing energy circulation was very good.

But it was not heavy enough.

As Hakamo-o’s dragon bloodline continued to develop, his strength had increased greatly.

Even with an additional one hundred kilograms of weight, Hakamo-o could still move freely.

His astonishing strength allowed him to leap more than ten metres directly and strike Wigglytuff down from the sky into the dust.

The referee waved the flag.

"Wigglytuff is unable to battle. The winner is Hakamo-o!"

Millie’s scholarly air seemed to have been diluted somewhat by this defeat.

She was a little broken.

Why could Hakamo-o jump that high?

Did he know how much brutal training she and Wigglytuff had gone through to combine inflation with Blizzard and fly that high?

"Zangoose, take the stage!"

Sharp claws.

Sharp eyes.

This was an extremely excellent Zangoose.

"Slash!"

Zangoose rushed forward.

Hakamo-o raised his arm and caught Zangoose’s claws.

Clang!

The claws seemed to strike alloy.

Hakamo-o grinned, full of confidence in the defensive power of his dragon scales.

He used Iron Defense every day to temper his dragon scales.

A mere Zangoose — how could it tear through them?

But for Zangoose, the claws it polished every day with Hone Claws had actually failed to break Hakamo-o’s scales.

This was simply extraordinary humiliation.

"Dragon Claw!"

"Slash!"

The two claws collided.

Zangoose’s hand was directly knocked aside, its claws numb.

Now it was settled.

Not only was its attacking power lacking, but its strength was lacking too.

Hakamo-o struck Zangoose in the abdomen with one claw, and Zangoose was in so much pain it could not make a sound.

It had been hit in a vital spot.

The Razor Claw was not worn for nothing.

Hakamo-o spun, his tail whipping Zangoose’s chin.

Zangoose flew up, then fainted immediately after landing.

The referee waved the flag.

"Zangoose is unable to battle. The winner is Hakamo-o!"

Unwilling!

But Millie suddenly smiled softly.

She accepted her defeat.

She would go back and keep working hard. Next time she challenged Veilstone Gym, she refused to believe she would lose this easily again.

In the audience, the uncle rubbed his chin.

"Why do I feel like Hakamo-o has become much stronger than yesterday?"

Nina nodded.

"Although I didn’t use instruments to test Hakamo-o yesterday, according to basic analysis, his strength shouldn’t have been enough to support him jumping that high."

Maylene did not care.

"Hakamo-o trains every day, so naturally he gets stronger."

The spiky-haired guy strongly agreed with Maylene’s words.

"Pokémon can get stronger through both training and battling. Maybe Hakamo-o just happened to break through."

Nina took a deep breath and gave up on explaining to the two of them just how great and unbelievable Hakamo-o’s progress had been.

With two semi-illiterates, even if she explained, they probably would not understand.

Because Julian’s talent had improved, Hakamo-o had undergone a dramatic change overnight.

The potential Hakamo-o had accumulated over eight years was rapidly being released, like a dam opening its floodgates. Once it began, it could not be stopped.

After returning to the lounge, Julian handed his Poké Balls to Nurse Joy.

A cold-looking young man also arrived there.

"In our match later, I hope you’ll use your full strength. I know I’m not your opponent, but I want to know exactly how large the gap between us is."

Julian nodded seriously.

"I understand."

"My name is Cole. I once served as an assault captain in the Sinnoh police force. My goal is to return to my hometown and establish a Fighting-type Gym."

Julian extended his hand to him.

"Then let me congratulate you in advance on your success."

Cole was somewhat surprised.

"Aren’t you afraid I’ll steal the League subsidy meant for you?"

Julian smiled.

"Maybe it’ll be another Fighting Gym that gets shut down instead."

Among Sinnoh’s twenty-five Gyms, aside from Veilstone Gym, there was another Fighting Gym.

But its operating situation was even worse than Veilstone Gym’s, and it had ranked near the bottom for years.

Three Fighting Gyms would be too many. If Cole’s application succeeded, one Fighting Gym was destined to be shut down by the Sinnoh League.

But Julian was confident.

The Gym shut down would not be Veilstone Gym.

Cole smiled knowingly.

"I’ll take your blessing!"

The championship match attracted great attention.

"Primeape, I’ll leave this to you!"

"Go, Hitmonchan!"

The referee swung the flag down.

"The match begins!"

Julian shouted, "Dynamic Punch!"

Cole also shouted, "We’ll use Dynamic Punch too!"

Primeape and Hitmonchan were both hit.

Primeape retreated three steps.

Hitmonchan retreated five.

"Again!"

"We’ll do it again too!"

It was not that Cole was copying him.

Against Primeape, the only way was to attack head-on.

Defence and counterattack were a dead end.

They clashed again.

Primeape still fought in a straight, direct manner, while Hitmonchan tried to apply Fighting techniques.

But...

It was useless.

Primeape’s instincts were extremely strong. Instead, Hitmonchan exposed an opening and was beaten into staggering backwards.

Primeape violently stepped forward.

Mega Punch.

Hitmonchan clutched its stomach and knelt, unable to rise.

The referee waved the flag.

"Hitmonchan is unable to battle. The winner is Primeape."

"Go, Hitmonlee! Use Mega Kick!"

"Take it, then Mega Punch!"

Primeape endured Hitmonlee’s kick head-on, its rage rising and vaguely exceeding ten times its strength.

It flew forward with a punch.

That violent power was like a dragon’s impact.

Hitmonlee crashed directly into the wall and became embedded in it.

Cole’s eyes widened.

Hearing about it a hundred times could not compare to seeing it once.

Primeape’s strength was actually this terrifying!

The referee waved the flag.

"Hitmonlee is unable to battle. The winner is Primeape. Therefore, the champion of this tournament is Julian Veyne from Veilstone City!"
