Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Greedy Croagunk!
Although Cassia could not come, Julian still planned to visit Verdant Cloud Mountain this weekend.
He would treat it as a rehearsal before going there with Cassia.
He would prepare for the possible situations they might encounter at Verdant Cloud Mountain and get all the tools they needed ready. He had to give Cassia a perfect outing experience.
At dinner, Darius, who had spent the whole day messing around somewhere unknown, suddenly appeared with a fishing rod in his hand.
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"You went fishing?"
Darius nodded.
"I heard from a friend that someone saw a golden Magikarp in the pools of Verdant Cloud Mountain. Someone is willing to pay one million to buy that golden Magikarp."
"So I went with my friend to take a look. This fishing rod in my hand cost me two thousand. In the end, forget a golden Magikarp, I didn’t even catch an ordinary one."
Julian rubbed his temple.
"Are you sure there really is a Magikarp, and it wasn’t some trick that person made up to sell fishing rods?"
Darius’s eyes widened.
"No way?!"
One fishing rod cost two thousand. As long as they tricked five hundred people, they could make a million.
"Let me see the rod."
Julian took the fishing rod and tested it, discovering that its material was actually decent.
Although it was not worth two thousand, selling it on the market for five hundred would not be a problem.
It was not pure fraud.
"It’s not an especially good fishing rod, but it can be used. It’s just that if you want to catch a golden Magikarp, you either rely on luck or skill."
"You’d be better off going to Veilstone Game Corner to play games. Your odds of winning there would be higher."
At Veilstone Game Corner, Darius relied on skill to earn Game Coins. As for those luck-based games...
Maylene’s luck was actually quite good. Last time, she had won Stufful in one try.
Coincidentally, Julian planned to go to Veilstone Department Store tonight to claim the household appliances he had won as prizes.
He could buy a few fishing rods along the way and add fishing to this outing.
Maybe Maylene could catch a golden Magikarp.
Most Shiny Pokémon only changed colour.
A golden Magikarp and an ordinary Magikarp would not have much difference in ability.
Of course, Julian had also heard that there did indeed exist mutated Pokémon with extraordinary talent.
Uh...
He could not say he had only heard of it. Primeape’s rage was like a mutated talent.
Julian should count as having personally seen and owned one.
After the family of three finished dinner, they brought the measurements Julian had prepared in advance to Veilstone Department Store to claim the household appliance prizes.
With Maylene’s preferences as reference, Julian quickly selected the prizes.
As for Darius, his opinion was not important.
Regarding fishing rods, Julian did not buy only four rods just because he planned for four people to go on the outing.
Instead, he directly made a generous purchase of ten.
When fishing skill was insufficient, they would compensate through the number of rods.
After agreeing with the staff on the installation time for the next day, the siblings returned home. As for Darius, he followed Julian’s suggestion and ran to Veilstone Game Corner to see whether the prizes had been updated.
After returning to Veilstone Gym, Julian directly led his six Pokémon, along with Maylene and her two Pokémon, in meditation.
This was a martial artist’s meditation for calming the mind and gathering qi.
Julian had specially prepared a large brass bell and a mechanical striking device. Every fifteen minutes, the mechanism would strike the bell once.
They would use the sound of the bell to assist everyone’s meditation.
Julian stood facing the Pokémon and Maylene.
"Stand in whatever way feels most comfortable, then follow my breathing rhythm."
"Inhale."
"Exhale."
Hakamo-o and Gallade entered the state the fastest, followed by Sirfetch’d and Riolu.
Croagunk’s thoughts were complicated, so he entered the meditative state slightly slower than even Primeape.
Instead, the simple-minded Torchic and Stufful entered the state faster than both of them.
After one round of training, the other Pokémon could go and eat extra food.
Only Croagunk and Primeape were kept behind by Julian for additional practice.
"Primeape, your excessive rage touched your soul, making you unable to stop feeling restless. You should have realised this too, right?"
"The old you wouldn’t have been this unable to control your anger."
Primeape nodded.
His current rage was indeed somewhat beyond control.
Perhaps it was because the progress he had made since being captured by Julian was greater than the progress he had made in an entire year before.
Especially Cynthia’s Garchomp. How could the old Primeape have encountered an opponent at that level?
Primeape immediately began meditating seriously, working hard to keep his heart in a still-water state.
Julian then looked at Croagunk.
"Croagunk, you always think too much and want too much. You should dig into your own strengths."
"Instead of wanting to compete with Primeape in strength today, compete with Hakamo-o in defence and stamina tomorrow, and compete with Gallade in technique the day after."
"You even had to compare yourself because Farfetch’d evolved before you. Right now, you should learn to let go, not pick more things up."
"Abandon some directions and focus on developing the power that remains."
Croagunk nodded thoughtfully, considering which directions he should abandon.
Croagunk slowly crouched down, the poison sacs in his cheeks constantly pulsing.
Suddenly, the brass bell was struck by the mechanical device and released a clear sound.
A layer of black light appeared across Croagunk’s body.
Feeling the energy surging inside Croagunk, Julian’s eyes widened.
"This is... Nasty Plot!"
The Dark-type boosting move, Nasty Plot.
It could activate the brain and greatly increase a Pokémon’s Special Attack.
Croagunk had his epiphany on the training field, and he had actually comprehended something real.
Croagunk stood, a mass of earthy-yellow mud appearing in his hand. Then he injected poison into the mud.
This purple-black sludge was pushed forward by Croagunk and spread outward in a wave.
A two-for-one deal!
Although Croagunk was still not proficient, he could be considered to have mastered the move: Sludge Wave.
Sludge Wave was a large-area Poison-type attack move.
Combined with Nasty Plot’s boost, Croagunk’s battlefield response ability would increase greatly.
Compared to Mud-Slap, Sludge Wave had greater power and wider range.
Croagunk stood up, filled his muscles with energy, and used Bulk Up again.
Purple light lit up in his palm, and he stabbed hard towards the empty air in front of him.
Julian smiled knowingly.
This Croagunk really would not change his nature.
Even after deciding to focus on developing his abilities, he still wanted to walk the mixed-attacker path.
Grasp with both hands, and both hands must be strong.
"Continue meditating!"
Another half an hour passed before Julian announced the end of meditation.
"All right. Today’s training ends here. Go eat."
Julian added extra food for Primeape and Croagunk.
Hakamo-o suddenly pushed his plate over as well.
Julian was somewhat surprised.
"Not full?"
Hakamo-o nodded.
Julian added another half bowl for Hakamo-o.
After evolving from Jangmo-o into Hakamo-o, Julian had changed Hakamo-o’s food bowl to a large one.
Hakamo-o was not greedy for food, but the Dragon type’s enormous appetite meant Hakamo-o never ate little at any meal.
"There hasn’t been any major change, so why has your appetite grown so much?"
Hakamo-o shook his head. He did not know either, but he just felt that he was not full.
After this half bowl went down, Julian looked at him curiously.
"What about now?"
Hakamo-o shook his head, so Julian added another half bowl.
After eating this, Hakamo-o finally nodded.
He was full.
Two bowls per meal, four meals a day.
Had Hakamo-o’s growth period arrived?
Next, Julian would need to focus on Hakamo-o’s physical growth and see whether Hakamo-o’s base values would undergo a major change.
