Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Master

Repairing a pool that was not especially large posed no difficulty at all for the villagers of Sweetwater Village, who were skilled in agricultural work.
Julian smiled and said, "I’ll help too."
Maylene waved her arms.
"And me!"
See?
Maylene’s natural monstrous strength was already proving useful.
Several villagers were responsible for digging up dry soil and packing it into sacks to repair the pool.
Julian’s Pokémon and Maylene were responsible for carrying everything.
First, they repaired the riverbank that had been damaged by Shadow Ball. Then they built a dam to slow the current. Finally, they cleared the silt from the pool and repaired the edges that had been dug open.
At the end, they moved away the sacks filled with soil and allowed the water to return to its normal flow speed.
In only half a day, the pool had basically been restored to its original state.
Watching the flowing water fill the pool little by little, Gengar happily flew back and forth in the sky.
The village chief wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Gym Leader Veyne, the pool has been repaired. Gengar shouldn’t come and harass our village again, right?"
Maylene immediately reminded him, "There are still the one hundred apples!"
The village chief quickly nodded.
"Right, right, right! I nearly forgot that. We’ll go back now and have someone send over one hundred apples."
Julian pointed at the ghost dancing in the air and said, "Village chief, just look at Gengar’s appearance. You can tell he isn’t holding a grudge against everyone."
The village chief finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"As expected of Gym Leader Veyne. You easily solved the problem that had troubled Sweetwater Village for days."
"It’s getting late. Come to my home for lunch."
Julian shook his head.
"No. I’d like to ask the village chief to help me purchase some ingredients and bring them here together with the one hundred apples promised to Gengar."
"I plan to stay by the pool and eat a meal with Gengar."
The village chief nodded.
"I understand, I understand. I’ll go back and arrange it now."
As expected of the local Gym Leader from Veilstone City
Not only is he willing to accept Sweetwater Village’s low-paying commission of only one hundred thousand, he’s also so dutiful, trying to completely dispel Gengar’s resentment
The river water filled the pool. Looking at the restored emerald-green pool, Gengar happily jumped into the water to play.
In Gengar’s heart, a strong favourable impression towards Julian appeared.
If not for Julian, his home could not have been repaired this quickly.
If things had gone badly, he might have had to move somewhere else to live.
Less than an hour later, the strong man who had carried water for the village chief yesterday came up the mountain carrying two large sacks.
"Gym Leader Veyne, this side has the one hundred apples, and this side has the ingredients you asked for."
Julian opened the sacks and checked them. After confirming there were no issues, he said, "Thank you for the trouble."
The strong man scratched his hair.
"Gym Leader Veyne, I don’t know whether Veilstone Gym accepts apprentices. My son also wants to become a Trainer, but I can’t afford to send him to Trainer school."
At this point, the burly farmer looked somewhat ashamed.
"So I was wondering whether he could learn from Gym Leader Veyne for a period of time."
Gym apprentices had no wages and had to handle all the miscellaneous work in the Gym, but food and lodging were included, and they could learn how to raise Pokémon.
If they become official Gym trainers or disciples, the Gym Leader would provide starter Pokémon for them.
There were also two ways to become a Gym apprentice.
One was to pay money.
The other was to contribute labour.
Those who paid money could leave after finishing their studies.
Those who contributed labour had to serve the Gym after finishing their studies.
In truth, Julian had not yet prepared himself to accept apprentices.
Seeing that Julian did not answer, the strong man directly knelt in front of him.
"Please, Gym Leader Veyne, accept my son!"
"This... please get up first."
Julian hurriedly stepped forward, wanting to help the strong man up.
The man only felt a powerful force directly lift him.
As expected of a Fighting Gym
Gym Leader Veyne’s so strong!
This made the man even more determined to have his son become Julian’s disciple.
Maylene also helped speak for him.
"Julian, just accept him. Anyway, it’s only one more person eating."
She felt there was nothing wrong with accepting a few apprentices. Veilstone Gym happened to need more people to strengthen its presence.
After perfectly handling the Sweetwater Village incident, she believed there would definitely be many nearby villages and towns seeking help from Veilstone Gym later.
When that time came, she would already be travelling. If only Julian appeared alone from Veilstone Gym, it would make Veilstone Gym seem insufficiently impressive.
Not only should he accept apprentices, he should accept several!
When handling Pokémon incidents, arriving with a minibus full of apprentices would have establish a stronger presence.
Julian frowned slightly.
"How old is your son?"
The strong man immediately answered, "My son is called Kai. He’s eleven this year. He often helps with farm work, so his physical fitness is definitely no problem! Whatever the Gym needs done, the Gym Leader can have him do it."
An eleven-year-old farm boy was capable enough to serve as Julian’s first apprentice.
Julian finally nodded.
"All right. I agree to accept him."
The strong man nodded repeatedly.
"Thank you, Gym Leader! Thank you, Gym Leader! I’ll go call Kai over now!"
The strong man immediately ran off. Julian also took out the cooking tools he carried with him and began preparing food.
As the aroma slowly spread, the chubby ghost swimming in the pool twitched his nose.
Ghost Pokémon likewise could not resist the temptation of delicious food.
Gengar immediately swam to the shore and stared eagerly at Julian cooking.
Julian smiled.
"Wait a little longer. It’ll be ready soon. I injured you last night, so one apple isn’t enough as an apology."
"At the very least, I have to treat you to a proper meal."
As the fragrance grew stronger and stronger, Gengar’s tears flowed from the corner of his mouth.
Maylene took a handful of ladyfinger biscuits out of her pocket and gave half to him.
"Eat some of these first. You treated me to an apple earlier, so I’ll treat you to biscuits too."
Grabbing the biscuits and stuffing them into his mouth to ease his craving, it felt that these siblings really were far too good.
"The food is ready. Let’s eat."
Julian served Gengar a large bowl and handed him a spoon.
It imitated Maylene and brought the spoon to his mouth.
Hot, hot, hot!
But extremely delicious!
Looking at his little expression as he stuck out his tongue to cool down, Maylene could not help laughing.
"Blow on it like this before you eat, and it won’t feel hot."
He tried it, and sure enough, it was no longer hot. He happily floated in the air and enjoyed the delicious food.
Not long after Julian’s food was finished, an energetic young man with a bright smile appeared beside the pool.
As soon as he appeared, he bowed to Julian.
"Hello, Gym Leader Veyne. I’m Kai."
Julian looked at him.
"Have you eaten? Sit down and have some with us?"
Kai shook his head.
"I already ate at home. Master, please eat."
Julian still served him a bowl while asking, "What kind of Trainer do you want to become?"
Without even thinking, Kai answered, "I don’t expect myself to become one of the Elite Four. I don’t even think I can become champion of the regional conference."
"I just hope to become a Trainer who can accept Pokémon Centre missions and earn money through the profession of Trainer, so my parents and my younger siblings can live better lives!"
It was an extremely plain and practical dream.
From Kai’s determined eyes, Julian believed Kai would achieve something.
Kai took out a Poké Ball.
"Master, actually, I’ve already caught one Pokémon. Come out, Geodude."
Maylene asked curiously, "Did you catch Geodude by yourself?"
Kai nodded.
"That’s right. Geodude was attracted by the aroma of the roasted sweet potatoes I made, so I shared roasted sweet potatoes with Geodude. Over time, we became friends."
"Geodude voluntarily became my Pokémon."
Maylene nodded.
"So that means you’re very good at roasting sweet potatoes?"
Kai froze.
"Huh?"
