Pokémon: My Parallel World Daughters Revealed

Chapter 17: Ancient Medicinal Ingredients?

[System Notification: Incorrect answer! The correct answer was D. It is used to create a certain rare medicine.]

[Clemont]: What?! D?! Wasn’t it B?! Isn’t the Prism Scale used to evolve Feebas into Milotic?!

[Bonnie]: ...Looks like Clemont was wrong again.

[Brock]: But Professor Oak and Mr. Wallace clearly said—

[Professor Oak]: Ahem... Well... I did say that the Prism Scale is a key item used to evolve Feebas into Milotic. In our world, that is a universally accepted fact. As for the parallel world... perhaps things work differently there.

[Wallace]: Professor Oak is right. It seems we cannot rely entirely on the common knowledge of our world when judging things from a parallel one.

[Cynthia]: This is an important warning. The livestream is showing us an entirely different parallel world. Its rules, the uses of its items, and even its Pokémon ecology may differ from our own.

[Lance]: That is true. Asher’s very existence already demonstrates that there are considerable differences between the two worlds.

[Lorelei]: Doesn’t that mean... we have no way of using knowledge from our world to answer these questions?

[Professor Sycamore]: Not necessarily. The livestream’s questions should be based on the content of the videos it has already shown. As long as we watch carefully, the answer should be hidden somewhere in the footage.

[Ash]: But... Milotic was clearly listed among Raina’s ace Pokémon during the introduction!

[Gary]: When Asher gave Raina the Prism Scale, all he said was, "You’ll need it someday." He never said it was intended to evolve Feebas. Therefore, the Prism Scale he gave her may truly have been meant for something other than directly triggering Feebas’s Evolution.

[Ash]: Then tell me this: what part of the video suggested that the Prism Scale would be used to make rare medicine?

[Gary]: ...How should I know?

[Ash]: Ha! I finally asked you something you couldn’t answer!

[Gary]: Shut up.

...

Littleroot Town, Hoenn Region.

Professor Birch sat inside his laboratory, surrounded by stacks of documents and research materials.

"A Prism Scale being used as a medicinal ingredient..."

He repeatedly flipped through the papers covering his desk.

"I feel as though I’ve seen something like that in an ancient document..."

His assistant leaned over from beside him.

"Professor, which document are you referring to?"

"I believe it was... something excavated from an ancient ruin a long time ago."

Professor Birch rose and walked toward a bookshelf.

"I remember a manuscript containing several medicinal formulas that have since been lost..."

He began searching through the shelves, sending dust cascading down around him.

"Cough, cough... Where is it...?"

"Professor, shouldn’t you put on a mask first?"

"No need! I found it!"

He pulled a yellowed manuscript from the deepest part of the bookshelf and opened it to one of its pages.

A flask had been drawn upon it, accompanied by a list of ingredients.

One of the illustrations unmistakably depicted a Prism Scale.

"I knew it..."

Professor Birch’s eyes lit up.

"In ancient times, Prism Scales really were used as medicinal ingredients in our world! The technique must have been lost sometime afterward."

[VIP Chat Group]

[Professor Birch]: Everyone, I found something! In ancient times, Prism Scales truly were used as medicinal ingredients in our world! The relevant techniques were simply lost later!

[Professor Oak]: Oh? Such a record exists?

[Professor Birch]: Yes! I have a manuscript that was excavated from an ancient ruin. It records that a Prism Scale could be used to create a certain medicine. However... the manuscript doesn’t say what kind of medicine it was, what effects it had, or what the complete formula required.

[Cynthia]: In that case, the parallel world may possess technologies that have been lost in ours... Perhaps because its history developed differently?

[Professor Oak]: That is possible. Since the history of the parallel world diverged from our own, certain technologies lost here may have continued being passed down there.

[Professor Sycamore]: This discovery is extremely important! If we can uncover the medicinal formulas used in that parallel world, we may be able to restore some of the lost technologies of our own!

[Clemont]: This is the power of science! By comparing the differences between the two worlds, we can acquire entirely new knowledge!

[Bonnie]: Clemont, you’re starting again.

[Clemont]: I’m contributing to scientific progress!

Melemele Island, Alola Region.

Professor Kukui stood in the schoolyard of the Pokémon School, stroking his chin as he watched the discussion on the screen.

"The parallel world follows different rules from ours..."

He murmured thoughtfully.

"Would that mean Alola’s Z-Moves are also different in that world?"

His gaze remained fixed on the screen.

"I wonder whether that girl will ever come to Alola."

Mallow approached from nearby.

"Professor Kukui, what are you thinking about?"

"I was wondering how Raina would battle if she came to Alola."

Professor Kukui smiled.

"And there are probably many differences between us and our counterparts in that world too."

Lumiose City, Kalos Region.

Professor Sycamore stood inside his laboratory before a massive projector. The livestream had been enlarged until it covered an entire wall.

"Sophie, record this for me."

"Of course, Professor."

"How extensive are the differences between this parallel world and ours? Are only a few minor details different, or do the fundamental rules of the entire world function differently?"

Sophie hesitated.

"Professor, we’ll probably need more data before we can answer that question."

"I know."

Professor Sycamore nodded.

"That is why we must continue watching."

The Village of Dragons.

Iris’s punishment had finally ended.

She lay sprawled across the ground like a puddle of mud, panting heavily while her legs continued twitching involuntarily.

"Is... Is it finally over?"

Axew cautiously approached and rubbed its head against her cheek.

"Axew..."

Iris rolled onto her back and stared up at the sky.

"I’m never racing to answer another question again."

The Elder emerged from the house and handed her a glass of water.

"Drink something first."

Iris accepted the glass and gulped down a large mouthful before releasing a long breath.

"Elder."

"Hmm?"

"Who do you think created this livestream?"

The Elder remained silent for a moment and looked up at the sky.

"I don’t know," she answered. "But whoever—or whatever—possesses the power to accomplish something like this... is not an existence we can easily comprehend."

Iris pushed herself upright and looked toward the screen.

"Then... what do you think the version of me in that parallel world is doing?"

The Elder smiled.

"Perhaps she is somewhere out there, working just as hard as you are to become a Dragon Master."

Iris froze for a moment before smiling as well.

"That would be amazing."
