Pokémon: My Parallel World Daughters Revealed
Chapter 220: Find Your Own WorkThe video continued playing.
After Light of the Diamond won the Golden Feather Award, Elaria became the youngest Best Actress winner in the history of the Pokémon world.
Whenever she went out, even if she wore a disguise, Elaria would still frequently get recognized.
In the end, she could only escape through one of Hoopa’s rings, often without even getting the chance to buy what she’d gone out for.
After returning home, Elaria took off her sunglasses, looking thoroughly confused.
"Hoopa, why does Elaria always get recognized so easily?"
"Because Elaria is way too famous!"
Hoopa floated in midair, counting on its fingers.
"More than ten million people watched our movie on the day of the premiere alone!"
Elaria fell silent for a moment.
Then she turned toward Diantha, who was sitting on the sofa flipping through a magazine.
"Mommy, was it like this for you before too?"
Diantha lowered the magazine and took a sip from her teacup.
"When I won my first Best Actress award, I couldn’t even go out to buy groceries without reporters chasing me for three blocks. You’re only getting started. You’ll get used to it eventually."
"Then how did Mommy get used to it?"
"Learn how to say no."
Diantha raised one finger.
"Turn down interviews you don’t like. Reject endorsements you aren’t interested in. And don’t worry too much about what other people think of you."
She glanced toward the kitchen.
"Your father once said something that made a lot of sense—’Other people’s expectations belong to them. You only need to focus on being yourself.’"
Asher poked his head out of the kitchen.
"Did I ever say something that philosophical?"
"You did."
Diantha didn’t even turn around.
"Then it really is quite philosophical."
Asher pulled his head back into the kitchen.
Elaria carefully took every piece of her mother’s advice to heart.
But putting that advice into practice turned out to be much harder than she’d expected.
After learning that Elaria was the Minister of the Cultural Department, many people deliberately sent in piles of suggestion letters just so they could get Elaria’s reply and autograph.
World League Cultural Department.
Elaria sat in her office chair with an enormous autograph book spread open in front of her.
A signing pen was clutched in her hand, and her expression was already approaching the brink of collapse.
"Big Sister Lillie."
Elaria looked up, despair written all over her golden eyes.
"Which one is this today?"
Lillie stood beside the desk, looking equally exhausted.
"The seventeenth. There are another forty-three waiting in the hallway."
"There are still that many?!"
"Yes."
Lillie turned her tablet around for Elaria to see.
"Sixty percent are requesting autographs, thirty percent are asking for photos with you, nine percent are invitations to various events, and the remaining one percent are harassment letters."
Elaria’s expression instantly changed from exhausted to horrified.
"Harassment letters?!"
"Don’t worry. I’ve already rejected all of them for you."
Lillie pulled the tablet back.
"I’ve also reported the matter to Chairman Asher."
"Big Sister Lillie, thank you for all your hard work..."
Elaria breathed a sigh of relief.
"It’s fine."
Lillie gave her a gentle smile.
"It’s what I’m supposed to do."
The office door opened.
Asher walked in carrying two cups of cocoa.
When he saw Elaria sprawled across her desk, he raised an eyebrow.
"What’s wrong, my superstar daughter?"
"Dad——"
Elaria lifted her head.
"I don’t want to be a Best Actress anymore. Being a Best Actress is exhausting. It’s a hundred times more tiring than going to school."
"Have some cocoa and take a break."
Asher placed one cup in front of Elaria and handed the other to Lillie.
"Don’t look so miserable. I came here this time to tell you some good news."
He paused.
"And some bad news."
"I want the good news first."
"The good news is that the Cultural Department doesn’t have any KPIs. You don’t have to worry about performance evaluations."
"What about the bad news?"
"The bad news is that having no KPIs means—you have to find your own work to do."
Elaria blinked.
"So... I can basically do whatever I want?"
"Exactly."
Asher leaned against the edge of the desk and crossed his arms.
"The Cultural Department’s main purpose is cultural outreach."
"Put into normal human language—you can go wherever you want and film whatever you want. No reports, no approval process, and no need to care about anyone else’s opinion."
[VIP Chat Group]
[Raihan]: No KPIs, and you get to find your own work to do. Leon, listen to how humane Brother Asher sounds.
[Leon]: I heard him. What are you trying to say?
[Raihan]: I’m saying, could you learn something from Asher and get rid of those Gym operation reports?
[Nessa]: Gym operation reports? We have to submit those?
[Raihan]: ??? I submit one every month. None of you do?!
[Milo]: Never have. Or rather... I’ve never even heard of them.
[Bea]: +1.
[Raihan]: ...
[Leon]: Ahem. Raihan, the truth is, I saw how seriously you were writing them every month and felt too bad to stop you.
[Raihan]: Leon, don’t you dare leave after work today.
The video continued playing.
With Asher’s sacred decree of "no KPIs," Elaria finally obtained her freedom.
The first thing she did wasn’t plan another movie.
Instead, she had Hoopa open a ring and teleported directly to Pallet Town in the Kanto region.
"Elaria, why did you choose Pallet Town as our first stop?"
Lillie followed behind her with a folder in her arms.
"Because Professor Oak invited me before."
Elaria held Kirlia in her arms while Hoopa sprawled across the top of her head.
"He said a lot of amazing Trainers and Pokémon have come from Pallet Town. And..."
She paused.
Her golden eyes lit up.
"I really want to hear the story of when Senior Ash and Pikachu first set out on their journey."
Outside Professor Oak’s lab.
Professor Oak was crouched in an open area of the backyard with a clipboard in his hands.
In front of him was a herd of Tauros happily eating their feed.
"Professor!"
Elaria jumped out of the ring and waved at him.
Professor Oak looked up.
He froze for a moment before a huge smile spread across his face.
"Elaria! What brings you here?"
"I’m here to do an interview!"
Elaria pulled a brand-new sketchbook from her backpack.
"Daddy said the Cultural Department doesn’t have any KPIs, so I should travel around and find stories myself."
"I want to record all kinds of interesting people and Pokémon, then turn their stories into paintings or short films."
"Then you’ve definitely come to the right person."
Professor Oak pulled over a folding chair and sat down.
"Wait here for a moment. I’ll go get something."
He turned and headed inside the laboratory.
A short while later—
Professor Oak returned carrying a stack of photo albums, each one nearly as thick as an encyclopedia.
"Every Trainer who has ever set out from Pallet Town is in here."
Professor Oak opened one of the albums and handed it to Elaria.
