Her voice was soft and sweet, like she was being coy. It was so tender it practically dripped.
The smile on Lou’s lips suddenly froze.
He lifted his emerald eyes, the depths within them as dark as a deep pool. "What did you call me?"
"Louis~"
Yu Zhizhi leaned lightly against the young man’s chest, nuzzling him affectionately. She buried her forehead in his embrace, desperately craving the warmth of his body.
But that warmth was chilling, bit by bit.
Yu Zhizhi was confused. ’What’s wrong with Louis? He was just holding me so gently.’
Just as she was about to say something else, he suddenly seized her by the chin.
Lou forced the young woman’s chin up. A flicker of flame shot through his emerald eyes, and his voice trembled faintly. "...Louis? You know Louis?"
It was as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over Yu Zhizhi’s head, and her sleepiness vanished in an instant. She stared blankly at the young man so close to her. His emerald-green pupils were fixed on her, his expression so vicious it looked like he wanted to bite her head off.
"L-Lou..."
She finally recognized the person before her. It wasn’t Louis!
’The one who came back was Lou...’
’Does that mean I... got them mixed up just now?’
Yu Zhizhi’s mind went blank. She could hear her own frantic heartbeat. Under the young man’s bone-chilling gaze, her body began to tremble uncontrollably.
A sharp pain came from her chin, which he held in a tight grip, and the corners of her eyes slowly reddened.
Lou stared at her darkly and repeated, "You know Louis? Have you met him?"
’No.’ Lou quickly realized. ’The way she acted just now... that wasn’t something that would happen after meeting Louis just once or twice.’
’It was an intimacy far beyond what she showed with him. Like lovers wrapped in a natural embrace.’
Lou’s throat tightened, and his heart felt as if it had been seized in a fist.
"No..." Yu Zhizhi wanted to say, ’I don’t know him,’ but when she met Lou’s eyes, a wave of panic washed over her.
Lou narrowed his eyes, starting to review all his memories with the young woman.
’The first time they met, while everyone else reacted with horror, she was the only one who ran toward me.’
’The little turtle had never been afraid of me.’
’Her trust, her reliance, her meekness... was it all because of... Louis?’
"Who are you?"
Lou slowly released his grip. He straightened up, kneeling on the bed, and looked down at the young woman trembling in the snow-white sheets.
He remembered that day at the villa. He had sensed a change in her aura, even if it was only for an instant.
Lou hadn’t probed further at the time, simply figuring that everyone had their secrets. If she didn’t want to talk, there was no point in forcing it out of her.
Yu Zhizhi curled into a ball, trying to hide under the covers, but he grabbed her by the neck and yanked her up.
"COUGH, COUGH..." Her face turned bright red as she let out a series of small, choked coughs.
Her Elf Ears trembled slightly. The young woman shivered like a leaf in the wind.
Lou resisted the urge to choke her to death right then and there.
His green eyes were sinister. As he drew closer, a hidden flame seemed to burst forth from their depths.
"Do you want to die?"
Yu Zhizhi shook her head with difficulty.
She could barely breathe. Her hands clutched at Lou’s wrist, and as she coughed, tears streamed down her face.
「In a daze.」
She remembered the first time she had truly met Lou, in a room in the Lost Tower. Back then, he had done the same thing—grabbed her tightly by the neck. She had been like a fish pulled from the ocean, deprived of all oxygen, on the verge of death.
At the moment she was about to suffocate, the Spiritual Technique maintaining her disguise faltered for an instant.
A flicker of shock appeared in Lou’s deep emerald eyes.
He let go.
Yu Zhizhi collapsed onto the bed, clutching her chest and gasping for air.
This time, Lou saw it clearly.
She was a little female of the Rabbit Clan, held in the palm of his hand, with no power to resist whatsoever.
’She’s a rabbit.’
’A rabbit...’
The disguising Spiritual Technique was still in effect; to Lou’s eyes, Yu Zhizhi still looked like she was from the Turtle Clan.
But Lou had already seen through to her true form.
He thought of Louis.
On the street where the Paradise Guard Team lived, in that two-story wooden cabin... Louis’s only reason for staying behind had been for a little rabbit.
"So it’s you."
A mocking smile appeared in the depths of Lou’s dim eyes. "We meet again, Miss Rabbit. Let’s have a formal introduction. I’m Louis’s other personality. My name is Lou."
Hearing the word "rabbit," Yu Zhizhi understood that Lou knew everything.
When her physical condition was extremely poor, the disguising Spiritual Technique would also show subtle fluctuations.
She had almost been exposed back at the villa.
Yu Zhizhi looked at the young man in the darkness. She had never seen Lou like this—so calm it was terrifying.
"Louis isn’t here. If you’re looking for him, you’ll be waiting a while."
Lou got right out of bed. He felt as if he had stepped into an ice cellar, his heart aching as if it had frozen and cracked. On the surface, however, he acted as if nothing was wrong, grabbing his coat from a chair and walking out without looking back.
"...Lou!" Yu Zhizhi couldn’t help but call out.
The young man didn’t hesitate for a second.
All that was left for her was the heavy sound of the closing door.
’Lou seems to be angry.’
Yu Zhizhi felt uneasy. She went to the mural and peered through the crack into the side hall. Lou was already gone; she had no idea where he went.
A notification sound rang in her ear—
[System: Host, friendly reminder: the Lord of Paradise’s favorability has plummeted. It has currently dropped below 15. Its peak was 59.]
’Lou...’
Yu Zhizhi sat on the bed, resting her forehead on her knees.
[System: The higher the Lord of Paradise’s favorability, the greater the success rate of the final mission submission. Please keep up the good work, Host.]
She thought for a moment, put on her shoes, and chased after him.
The main hall was not far from the bedchamber. The remains of a colossal creature glowed with an eerie green light. A black Crow perched high above, silently watching the young woman’s every move.
Yu Zhizhi didn’t dare run too far.
She wasn’t sure if there were other hidden dangers in the Paradise Temple.
After searching the area around the main hall without finding any sign of Lou, she decided to head back to her room for now.
’He has to come back eventually, right?’
「A long time passed.」
Yu Zhizhi heard footsteps in the side hall and immediately rushed out from the adjoining room.
Her steps faltered when she saw it was the Lord of Paradise.
The man’s pale face was devoid of expression. The bandages he wore before had been removed, and the eye socket that had been pierced by a knife was now healed. He saw the letter on the coffee table and shot a cool glance at the young woman standing in the doorway of the adjoining room.
"You didn’t give the letter to Lou?"
"...I haven’t had the chance."
The Lord of Paradise let out a soft huff. He sat down before the coffee table and soon realized something.
When he had appeared today, it was at the Star Highlands, far from the side hall.
In the past, whenever he regained consciousness, he was never too far from this little female.
Unless...
A mocking tone entered the man’s voice. "It seems he’s already grown tired of you. Faster than I imagined."
"In that case."
The Lord of Paradise rose to his feet and slowly walked over to Yu Zhizhi, looking down at her. "Let me think... what should I do with you."
