She dazedly stopped moving, her cheeks puffed out, forgetting to chew. Then she heard Yusen let out a soft chuckle. "Go on, eat."

Oh... Yu Zhizhi swallowed the egg-yolk pastry in her mouth. She licked her little rabbit paw and looked troubled when she saw the crumbs that had fallen on the soft cushion.

Yusen took out a tissue and wiped up the crumbs.

While he was at it, he also took her little rabbit paw and gently, meticulously wiped it clean.

’Yusen today...’

’...seems different than before.’

’That faint sense of distance is gone.’

Yu Zhizhi thought about what Shen He had said. ’Was Sensen threatened? I’ll definitely do my best to avoid the Big Shark from now on...’

As it grew later, Yu Zhizhi leaned against Yusen’s body and slowly began to doze off.

Once the political affairs in the Undersea Palace were settled,

Yusen carried the sleeping little rabbit back to Bishui Pavilion.

When the Black-clothed Steward saw this, a faint smile appeared on his face. ’There was some unpleasantness between His Highness and Lord Shen He in the Political Hall today, but at least His Highness can be more honest with himself now.’

"And the Little Prince?" Yusen asked, as was his custom.

"The Little Prince ate and then went to sleep. His appetite has been excellent these past two days; he’s eating four or five meals a day."

Yusen nodded and returned to his room.

In her sleep, the little rabbit kicked her legs a little.

He placed the little rabbit on the bed and went into the bathroom to shower.

Drowsy from sleep, Yu Zhizhi reverted from her Beast Form. She hugged the comforter, feeling the bed was incredibly soft and comfortable, like sinking into a cloud.

When Yusen came out, he saw the young woman lying on her side. Her light purple dress was slightly disheveled, revealing a section of her fair, smooth calf that glowed with a soft luster in the light.

With a towel draped over his shoulder, he slowly approached.

The little rabbit was sleeping soundly. She had been outside all day, getting much more exercise than she did at Bishui Pavilion.

Yusen’s thoughts turned to what the shark had said during the day.

He sat on the edge of the bed, slowly took her small hand, and lightly touched his fingertips to her palm.

"...I’ve missed you so much."

"Every day since I left Moonrise, I’ve thought of you."

Yusen lowered his gaze, looking at her sleeping face. The words buried deep in his heart could finally be uttered.

’Do you know?’

’How terrified I am of being left behind again...’

’I thought that as long as I didn’t get close, as long as I let go first, I wouldn’t be the poor soul who gets abandoned.’

’To say I didn’t love you anymore was just deceiving myself.’

Yusen slowly tightened his grip on the little rabbit’s soft hand, his voice slightly hoarse. "...None of them are any good."

"Don Locke K is frequently on the verge of madness. He might lose all his humanity one day and hurt you by mistake."

"Dracula has vanished without a trace and pays you no mind. No one knows if he’s dead or alive."

"Bolun is obsessive. In his mind, nothing is more important than the Varolan civilization."

"Spider has a mental illness. He could split into a fourth or fifth personality at any moment... Once a new personality takes control of his body, your safety can’t be guaranteed."

"Shen He..."

"To him, whether you live or die only depends on your usefulness to the Empire."

"None of them are any good."

"None of them."

"How could I possibly leave you with them?"

Yusen knew those people existed. His heart trembled. The thought of his little rabbit falling into their hands and the miserable fate that might await her—even if it was only a small chance—made it impossible for him to stand idly by.

"Only I..."

The Mermaid Youth whispered, "am the only one."

He wasn’t a Prophet.

He didn’t know what the future would hold.

He didn’t know if the nightmares of his childhood would be relived.

Yusen had once found a way to avoid getting hurt—

If you never have something, you can never lose it.

But...

He didn’t want to run away anymore.

He couldn’t bear the thought of his little rabbit getting hurt in any way.

Yusen bent his head and kissed the young woman’s palm, his eyes growing hot. "No matter what happens in the future, I will not retreat again."

Even if a cliff lay ahead, even if he would be smashed to smithereens, he would still forge ahead.

Like a moth to a flame.

He had to be the one to personally protect the girl he so deeply loved.

In a hazy daze, Yu Zhizhi felt as if she heard Yusen speaking. A burning heat spread from her palm. She slowly opened her eyes to see the Mermaid Youth kissing the center of her hand, the light touch of his eyelashes tickling her slightly.

’...Am I dreaming?’

The Mermaid Youth’s eyes were rimmed with red, and she clearly felt a small, cold pearl roll down her wrist.

Yu Zhizhi murmured, "Sensen, don’t cry..."

’I must be dreaming.’

’I’m dreaming again of the day Sensen and I parted.’

Yu Zhizhi caught the falling, crystal-clear pearl, her voice thick with emotion. "I’ll definitely come find you..."

It was as if the tears Yusen had shed by the sea that night had traveled across time and space to finally land in the young woman’s palm.

’She had never hated the Deep Sea.’

’Because Sensen was in the Deep Sea.’

’The first time she set foot here, she felt nothing but the joy of reuniting with Sensen.’

’I will definitely find him.’

’Definitely.’

Hearing her words, Yusen bowed his head low and let out a muffled sob.

After the incident in the Political Hall, Shen He didn’t return to Bishui Pavilion. Instead, he spent the night at the Miracle Training Ground.

The soldiers of his legion sparred with him one by one, and eight out of ten ended up with broken bones.

They could all feel that the atmosphere around Lord Shen He was particularly oppressive today. On the sidelines, one of the Tiger Whale Soldiers couldn’t help but sidle up to Buli. "What’s gotten into Lord Shen He?"

Sea Snake Siqi also spoke up slowly. "I heard he got into a fight with Prince You Sen, right in the Political Hall. But why?"

"They didn’t fight," Buli corrected. "Prince You Sen attacked, but Lord Shen He didn’t retaliate."

"Then why?" the Tiger Whale Soldier began to speculate. "Was it a political conflict? But Prince You Sen is going back to the undersea kingdom eventually, and their royal power has nothing to do with us on land."

"It’s because of the Little Prince Blue Whale—" another soldier chimed in, joining the gossip.

Buli looked like he wanted to say something but held his tongue.

Sea Snake Siqi suddenly had a realization. "Could it be... because of Ms. Zhi Zhi?"

The comment caused an uproar.

The soldiers burst into commotion. "That’s right! Ms. Zhi Zhi has been staying at the Royal Palace, and I heard she and Prince You Sen knew each other from before!"

"No way. How could Lord Shen He, over some female, in front of all those people—"

Before the soldier could finish, a sinister voice came from behind them. "Got a lot of free time?"

The entire group snapped to attention, their backs ramrod straight. They didn’t dare turn around.

Shen He: "All of you, eight hundred laps around the training ground."

"Sir!"

The soldiers fell into orderly ranks and began running around the vast training ground.

Buli had just started to move when he heard Lord Shen He stop him.

"Buli, you stay."

The brown-haired young man immediately stopped and marched over to the Imperial Marshal. "Sir, your orders!"

"That night—" Shen He leaned back against a towering, jagged rock. His short, silver-gray hair was soaked with sweat, and the look in his gray eyes was inscrutable. "What did she say to you?"

’So he did want to know, after all.’

’Why was the little rabbit smiling so happily?’

’How could she smile so happily at another male?’
