Yu Zhizhi’s expression froze when she heard the news. She couldn’t help but glance back. Outside the curtain, Geoffrey’s figure was a blur.
’Those two cubs will probably be delivered to Lord Shen He’s side unharmed, right?’
The Duke’s gaze fell on the little female’s face. He let out a slow "Mm," holding a small silver teapot, and said pointedly, "What a coincidence."
The Peacock, Geoffrey, didn’t understand the meaning behind the Duke’s words. He bowed and took his leave.
Yu Zhizhi turned back around. She was still thinking about the two Shark Beast Eggs when a small teacup was offered to her.
She took it. "Thank you."
"I wonder who gave birth to them for this shark?" The Duke’s golden, vertical pupils stared gloomily at the little female sipping her tea. Her rabbit ears twitched, and she coughed lightly as if she had choked.
Her cheeks flushed red. Yu Zhizhi guiltily held the teacup. Once the discomfort in her throat subsided, she started gulping down the warm water.
Seeing the little female act this way, the Duke was ninety percent sure.
His hand gripping the silver teapot tightened slightly. After a long moment, he finally tore his gloomy gaze away. The thought of her spending so much time with the shark churned a potent sourness within him.
That Hai Giant Shark was not the type to be gentle with women.
And to him, the little rabbit was a female from an enemy empire...
To get her pregnant under those circumstances... The Duke suddenly let out a cold laugh. He squinted at the little female, whose ears were drooping as she drank. "Drinking so much water, isn’t your stomach bloated?"
Yu Zhizhi put down the teacup. She sat bolt upright, pressing herself against the carriage window. As the carriage moved forward, the wind blew the curtain open, and it brushed against the side of her face.
"...I’m fine," she whispered in response.
For some reason, ever since Geoffrey had brought the news, Yu Zhizhi hadn’t dared to look up at the Duke.
Suddenly, she felt a slight chill around her waist. She looked down and saw an ethereal Cloud Mist coiling around her midsection.
She looked up at the man beside her in bewilderment.
The image of that undersea monstrosity being "swallowed" by the Cloud Mist was still vivid in her mind. ’The Duke isn’t going to punish me, is he...?’
Yu Zhizhi’s face paled. She shrank back, and just as she was about to say something, she found the mass of Cloud Mist lifting her body, gradually pulling her in front of the Duke.
She was seated in the man’s lap.
The Duke lowered his eyes to her flat stomach, gently placing his palm over it. The Cloud Mist gradually dissipated. His handsome features were just inches away. Yu Zhizhi couldn’t resist the urge to flee, but his other hand blocked her.
He held the little female’s shoulder, his gaze traveling from her stomach to her blushing face. "Did you give birth to them?"
Yu Zhizhi’s response was halting. "Yes... N-no... It wasn’t..."
"Yes or no?" The Duke’s snake-like pupils narrowed slightly.
The little rabbit lowered her head. "...Yes."
’Lying to the Duke is so hard. It’s like his eyes can see through everything in the world.’
A low "hmm" rumbled in the Duke’s throat, the sound drawn out as if he were thinking. He wrapped one arm around the little rabbit in his lap, his fingers hooking the sash of her white robe.
"Wasn’t that Mermaid there too? He’s the new Little Sea Emperor. Didn’t he protect you? Or..."
The Duke took a slow breath and gently pulled the sash undone. The white robe slid from the girl’s shoulders. His fingers traced a path down her back to her tailbone, where he softly grasped the fluffy white ball. "Did the brothers force you together?"
Yu Zhizhi’s body trembled as he suddenly grabbed her tail. The Duke’s words made her feel even more mortified. "No, no..."
"So it was voluntary?" The Duke’s tone seemed to grow even more dangerous.
Yu Zhizhi leaned gently into the Duke’s embrace. As she felt him stroke her rabbit tail, the corners of her eyes gradually reddened. She said nothing, only sniffling.
*Sniffle...*
’I absolutely cannot tell the Duke that I was the one who seduced the shark.’
’Lord Shen He...’
’He didn’t have those kinds of thoughts at first.’
’He never crossed any lines when we were on the ship.’
’It was only after we arrived in the Deep Sea Imperial City that I went to Lord Shen He’s room on my own, intending to seduce him while he was drunk.’
’Later... and then later...’
’After Blue Tone, especially at Black Tide Harbor, things got completely out of control.’
Seeing the little female remain silent, just burying her face in his chest with her small shoulders trembling, the Duke let out a long, gloomy sigh.
He gently held the girl’s soft body, his nose brushing against her rabbit ear, which smelled of earth.
’...You little mess.’
Ordinarily, he would have restrained himself and washed her clean before holding her.
But right now, he was holding her, not minding that she was dirtying the front of his robes.
The next stop was still some distance away. He couldn’t wait.
His little pet that had run away from the Duke Mansion was finally back. Although the matter of those two shark cubs weighed heavily on his mind, the thought of her being all alone and helpless in the Deep Sea Empire made his heart ache.
He took a damp towel and slowly wiped the little rabbit’s palms and fingers, bit by bit, with patience and care.
"Was the shark good to you?" the Duke asked abruptly.
Yu Zhizhi felt a slight tickle on her palm. She turned her head to the side. "...He was okay."
It was a question she could only answer ambiguously.
’Lord Shen He...’
’He was... probably good to me.’
It was just that she wasn’t a citizen of the Deep Sea. Yu Zhizhi had no doubt that if she had come from one of the Sea Clans of the Deep Sea Empire, Lord Shen He would have treated her even better.
"You were happy to see the Mermaid, weren’t you?" the Duke asked again.
This time, Yu Zhizhi smiled and nodded. "Very happy~"
The Duke’s wiping motions paused. He recalled the video call on Zero Star Street, the image of the little female together with the Mermaid Youth—
’He shouldn’t have asked.’
This little rabbit was completely smitten by the Enchanting Shark; a clear smile had appeared on her face just at the mention of him.
The Duke gently pinched her cheek. "Then why not have a few more fish cubs for him?"
Yu Zhizhi blinked her eyes.
She pouted her lips, which made her look like a little goldfish.
The Duke let go.
The gloom in his heart gradually gathered. He knew perfectly well that she hadn’t ended up in an enemy empire of her own free will, but the mere thought of her being all lovey-dovey with those two brothers, the shark and the Mermaid, made his heart ache with sour jealousy.
The carriage swayed slightly as it moved.
The night was deep.
On the low table inside the carriage sat an oil lamp. Its faint light cast the man’s purple robes in shadow. His golden, vertical pupils stared at the smoking pipe on the table, unmoving for a long while.
Yu Zhizhi had originally wanted to go back to her own seat.
But seeing the gloomy pressure emanating from the Duke, she grew a little anxious and couldn’t help but take his fingers in her hand. "How is Little Amon?"
The Duke’s snake-like pupils slowly shifted to her face.
"He’s not dead."
Yu Zhizhi held his fingers, bit by bit, and leaned her head against him. She snuggled gently against the man before her. Her tender, proactive gesture eased much of the gloom from the Duke’s brow.
"I miss the babies. When we get back, will you take me to see them?" Yu Zhizhi asked softly.
