"They are sixteen and seventeen. The oldest will turn eighteen in six months." She answered.

"And what is the cost for basic gear to begin their careers?" I asked.

"That depends entirely on the guilds they choose to join. Each guild has different requirements for what tools they use." She said.

We walked over to the table of older kids.

"Which of you is the oldest?" I asked.

A girl with brown hair slowly raised her hand.

"What are your plans for when you turn eighteen?" I asked.

She looked at sister Lilly and Lilly nodded at her to answer.

"I would like to join the craftsman guild and become a jeweler. But I can’t afford the registration fee and the tools for apprenticeship so I will probably have to join the adventurer guild." She answered.

"How much do you need for the registration and tools?" I asked.

"One silver for registration and five silver for the tools." She answered.

I turned to sister Lilly.

"That’s it? Six silver is what’s holding these kids back?" I asked.

I turned back to the table.

"Who is the next oldest?" I asked.

A boy raised his hand.

"What do you want to do and what will it cost?" I asked.

"I want to become an adventurer. It’s only fifty bronze to register and a cheap iron short sword is only two silver." He said.

"What about armor?" I asked.

"I’ll get that later after I do a couple of missions." He said.

"So you plan on going into the wilderness unarmored with an iron short sword?" I asked.

He shrugged his shoulders.

"Yeah, I can’t afford armor like kids with parents that can buy their armor for them." He said.

I turned back to sister Lilly.

"Six months before they start turning eighteen? And six silver is enough to change their lives?" I said.

She nodded her head. We spent an hour at the pastry shop before leaving. Of the fifty silver I put on the counter only fourty was spent on pastries. I put the remaining ten back in my ring. Once we returned to the orphanage the children scattered throughout the building. We said our farewells to the sisters and returned to the hotel. Sarah retrieved the bag of laundry she had dropped off and I disposed of the sisters old clothes before we went to our room. Once inside I removed my helmet and sat at the table.

"How is it the people of this city can’t even spare a few silver coins for those kids?" I asked.

"You have a fortune because you cleared orc caves and took their hoards. For these people they have to work for days to get just one silver coin." Sarah said.

Just then the meal server arrived with dinner and Amber brought the cart in. We ate dinner and everyone changed out of their clothes and lay in bed. We all fell asleep in each other’s arms.

We woke up the next morning and ate breakfast. I gave Amber and Lyra each two gold coins and They went with Sarah and Lucy to pick out their wedding dresses. I decided to walk around the city and look around. I found a jewelry shop I hadn’t been to yet that had necklaces in the window. I walked around and spoke to the two ladies at the counter.

"I have a wife and three fiancees I will be marrying tomorrow. I would like to get all of them a necklace." I said.

The women showed me dozens of necklaces. For Sarah I chose a large pear shaped sky blue topaz pendant on a fine silver chain. For Lucy I chose an emerald of the same shape and size as Sarah’s pendant but on a white gold chain. For Amber I chose a pear shaped honey amber pendant on a yellow gold chain. For Lyra I chose a pear shaped gray spinel stone on a silver chain. I matched each pendant to the eye color of the woman it was for. After picking them out I paid two gold coins for them. The women put them each in their own box and I stored them in my ring. After walking around for two hours I returned to the hotel room and waited for the girls to return. I removed my armor and sat on the bed and waited for twenty minutes before the girls walked in laughing and giggling.

"Sounds like you ladies had fun." I said.

"Now we all have our own wedding gown and a white dress to wear to any weddings we might be invited to." Sarah said.

"Well i did a little shopping of my own." I said.

"Yeah, what did you get?" Asked Sarah.

I stood up from the bed and walked over to them.

"It’s a surprise. I want all of you to close your eyes and keep them closed until I tell you to open them." I said.

They excitedly closed their eyes. I walked behind each one starting with Sarah and placed the necklaces around their necks. After Sarah I went to Lucy, then Amber, then Lyra. After I finished I stood in front of them and looked at the necklaces.

"Open your eyes." I said.

They immediately opened their eyes and looked down at the pendants and gasped in surprise.

"It’s beautiful." Lyra gasped.

"It’s so pretty." Amber said.

"This is the nicest thing anyone has ever given me." Lucy cried.

"Erik. This is beautiful." Sarah whispered.

They ran to me and wrapped their arms around me all at once.

"I’m glad you like them. I wasn’t sure if you would. I tried to match them to your eye colors." I said.

Amber started crying as she gripped the stone in her hand.

"I’m just so happy right now." She sniffled.

I bent down as I lifted her chin with my finger and kissed her.

"Hearing you say that makes me happy." I said as I kissed her again.
