The Orphanage was in terrible condition as there was an actual hole in the roof. Several windows were broken out and boarded up from the inside.
"Are you serious? Why doesn’t the church help fund its orphanages?" I asked.
"The church helps by building them and supplying the sisters to run them. You must keep in mind the church has over three hundred orphanages across the kingdom." The priestess said.
"And the best incentive for sponsors the church can provide is the promise of a personal harem in the form of the sisters that work the orphanage?" I asked.
The priestess looked away and avoided eye contact.
"Take me inside." I said.
She led us into the orphanage and introduced me to the head sister.
"This is sister Mary. She is the head sister." Said the priestess.
I looked at sister Mary. She was an elf who looked no older than twenty-three.
"How old are you?" I asked.
"Twenty-five." Sister Mary replied.
"How bad is the situation here?" I asked her.
"We have five sisters taking care of forty-three children. We are severely low on funds. Would you like to make a donation?" She asked.
"Forty-three? What is your current capacity and how low on funds are you?" I asked.
"Our current capacity is forty since this orphanage has never had a sponsor to expand it. As for the funds we have three days worth of food remaining." She answered.
"You are over your capacity by three?" I asked.
"Yes. Some of the children share beds." She said.
I looked at the priestess for a full minute.
"I want you to stand in front of me as I listen to you explain to every sister of this orphanage exactly what it means to be a sister of a sponsored orphanage and what sisters of other sponsored orphanages have gone through." I said.
The priestess nodded her head and gathered all the sisters. There were a total of three elves and two humans. As I listened she explained to all five sisters exactly what it meant to be a sponsored sister. How they effectively become the payment for a sponsor to agree to sponsor the orphanage and for as long as the sponsor keeps his side of the deal they are essentially his personal harem. In exchange the sponsor agrees to fully fund the upkeep and operations of the orphanage including feeding and clothing the children and the sisters and paying for necessary repairs to the building. The sisters all listened to the explanation in varied forms of grief, distress, and acceptance. Once the explanation was complete the priestess then introduced me to the sisters.
"This man is Mister Erik Red. He is the sponsor of the Emerald City orphanage." She said.
The sisters all looked at me in surprise. I turned to nyx.
"Sister Nyx here is the second senior sister of my orphanage. She will take you sisters into the other room and explain to you everything I have done for her orphanage and will answer any questions you may have. Understand this. I absolutely will not sponsor this orphanage unless I am certain you understand what it means for you and you fully agree to it." I said.
Nyx took the sisters into the other room while I gave myself a tour of the house. Nearly everything was broken. All the children’s beds were practically sitting on the floor. None of their rooms had doors. In the attic there was only one bed where the sisters slept. Once back downstairs I saw the children begin walking in. They were all thin, underfed and dirty. Their clothes ruined. Their shoes were falling apart. I went into the kitchen and checked the cupboards, none of which had doors. The only food I found was half a bag of potatoes and a small bag of cornmeal. When I came out of the kitchen Nyx was standing by the stairway with the sisters of this orphanage. Sister Mary stepped forward.
"Did you really pay to fully renovate the entire orphanage?" She asked.
"Yes."
"And you paid for two new sets of bunk beds for each room?"
"Yes"
"And all of the sisters have their own bed?"
"Yes."
"All the kids have seven brand new outfits and two brand new pair of shoes?"
"Yes."
"The sisters too?"
"Yes."
"You spend double the minimum requirement for food per person?"
"Yes."
"You even bought new toys, and books for the kids? And a new playground in the backyard?"
"Yes."
And you pay for every child old enough to train three days a week at the training grounds? And you promised the kids to pay for any apprenticeship and tools they choose?"
"Yes."
"And you pay for every child and every sister to go to the bathhouse a minimum of four days a week?"
"Yes."
"And you don’t force the sisters to beg strangers for coin?"
"Correct."
"And all you get in return for all of that is the sisters of the orphanage as your personal harem?"
"Yes."
The sisters all looked at each other and after some whispering they turned back to me.
"We agree." They said as one.
"Great. My first order. Nyx, girls. Take these kids shopping for clothes and shoes. Same amount as the kids of the other orphanage. Then take them to the bathhouse so they can wash themselves properly before wearing their new clothes. I will go with the priestess and the new sisters to sign the sponsorship contract and seal their collars. We will meet you afterwards so you can do the shopping for the sisters." I said as I handed five gold coins to Sarah.
Sister Mary and the other new sisters gasped and began crying as I gave the order. I turned back to the sisters.
"I have met sister Mary. What are the rest of your names. By order of seniority please." I said.
"Sister Erin." Said one of the humans
"Sister Miri." Said an elf.
"Sister Elowen." Said an elf.
