The ducal keep had not slept.
Quinlan and Ayame felt it from the outer gate: courier horses streaming through the yard, boots taking the stairs in relays, and the great hall, when they entered it, converted wholesale into a war camp of paper.
Trestle tables ran in ranks down its length, stacked with documents in sorted tiers, and clerks moved between them at a pace one report shy of running.
At the center of it all, installed behind a desk the size of a modest fortification, sat Elder Chizuru of the Fujimori, governing.
Her brush did not stop while she spoke. "Denied. The garrison’s pay is not a negotiation, and neither is its schedule; if the river treasurer finds it burdensome, he may find a new profession. Approved. Grain moves at first thaw, under escort, and the toll stations reopen with it. Denied. Denied. Approved, contingent on inspection. Where is the western granary count I demanded at dawn?"
Papers left her desk in two even streams, one to each flank, into the hands of clerks who received them with a bow to the Elder and ran.
Captain Rin materialized out of the traffic at a jog, helmet gone, an entire courier office compressed into one person. She caught sight of the visitors and braked hard.
"My lady. My lord." The salute she gave the two of them had lost its parade polish overnight and kept all of its sincerity.
"It’s... Forgive me. It’s working. The towns are answering again. Three garrisons’ pay rode out under escort this morning, the river tolls are staffed, the..." She caught herself mid-report, reddening. "You didn’t ask. Did you require the Elder?"
"Just admiring the view," said Quinlan, and meant it.
Behind the mountain range of paperwork hung a map of Silverwind with pins migrating across it, roads inked open one by one, and beside it a list of towns losing entries by the hour. The duchy had stopped bleeding, and every person working in that hall could feel it.
Elder Chizuru did not rise.
She finished the stroke she was on, set the brush down with the care owed a relic, and waited behind her desk with the warmth of a courtroom.
"Elder." Ayame stopped in front of the desk, parade-even. "Report."
For one second, nothing came. The sourness surfaced first, pulling the Elder’s mouth into a thin line while obedience and loathing finished their negotiation somewhere behind it.
Then compliance arrived the way Chizuru paid every debt: in full, on time, hating every coin.
"Silverwind stands at seven parts in ten of full function and will pass nine within the week." The numbers came without a single glance at any ledger. "The treasury is reconciled through spring. The northern roads reopen with the thaw, and the granaries will carry the towns until they do. The nearest of the emptied ones are already filling again. The duchy will not require your attention."
Every word of it was correct, courtly, and polished to a shine. Her eyes delivered the second report: leech, usurper, gagger of elders. The face around them stayed composed. She had bitten into something sour years ago and kept it there out of principle.
"Magnificent work, Elder," Quinlan beamed at her. "The duchy looks better already."
The Elder took her brush back up. "The keep is honored," she pronounced at ceremonial volume, to a point on the wall above his head, and the next petition received its Denied with a fraction more wrist than the word required.
"We’ll be gone from your hall soon~" Ayame promised. "One matter first."
She turned.
By the far wall, in servant’s gray with her sleeves tied back, the nominal leader of the Fujimori clan waited at the foot of a sorting table, binding answered petitions into bundles with string.
She looked miserable, and none of it was performance: neck bowed, eyes on her string, tying knot after knot as if the work were the only thing in the keep she still had any right to touch.
"Kaede."
The string went still. Kaede set down the bundle, crossed the floor, and bowed to her sister, deep, hands flat on her thighs. She had not once looked fully at either visitor since they entered the hall.
"You should stay in Silverwind." Ayame’s voice was level and public, a posting being read out. "I’d like you to oversee the governance of this duchy, and everything that passes through this hall passes under your eyes."
Kaede straightened by degrees as the posting sank in, and for one unguarded moment the servant’s gray sat on her like a uniform again.
Then the moment ran into the obvious.
"But..." Her gaze flicked to the desk, where the brush had resumed issuing verdicts, and dropped again. "Forgive me. The Elder cannot disobey you. What would I be watching for?"
"[Subjugation] is mighty, but it is not foolproof." Ayame raised one finger. "It compels obedience, not diligence. She answers what she is asked and volunteers nothing, which means someone in this keep has to know what to ask." A second finger. "And she will be borrowed from time to time. Black Fang enjoys her company."
Behind the desk, the brush stopped mid-stroke and stayed stopped for three full seconds before it went back to work.
Kaede was nodding before the list ended, and the nodding had color in it, purpose taking hold in real time on a face that had spent a season expecting none.
Quinlan drew Ayame against his side, hand settling proud and easy on her waist, and said nothing at all. The Elder could not betray them, not even work badly; that had never been the question. Ayame was merely helping her little sister by giving her something useful to do instead of just being miserable.
’A big step forward,’ Quinlan noted.
"And one task from me," Ayame added.
Kaede came to attention.
"The dawn dojo took heavy damage when I dueled Quinlan." Not one muscle moved anywhere in Ayame’s face. "I’d like you to restore it. Every board, every rack, every stone, exactly as it was. Oversee the work yourself."
’... Okay, maybe just half a step,’ Quinlan chuckled inwardly, holding his little vindictive lover even closer.
He couldn’t care less what Ayame decided to do with Kaede; the decision was left fully in her hands. He’d be okay with torture, swift execution, or full redemption. Whatever made Ayame happy.
Kaede’s breath snagged halfway down and stayed there.
She had seen the dawn dojo that morning. She had seen things in the dawn dojo that morning that no restoration effort would ever sand out of her.
"Yes, s..." The word gave out before it could finish. She bowed lower over her own hands, to Ayame’s shadow on the floor. "...It will be exactly as it was."
She had nothing but questions, an entire keep of them, bundled and strung and stacked to the rafters.
She asked none of them.
Ayame had already turned away.
"Will you..."
It was out before Kaede could fold it. Of the entire keep of questions, the one that escaped was the smallest. "...Will you visit? Sometime."
Ayame stopped where she stood, her back to the hall, and stayed that way long enough for the courier traffic to notice and detour around her.
Then she looked back over her shoulder, head tilted, and smiled.
"When I have the time."
Kaede bowed so fast and so deep that her low-bound hair swung forward over her shoulder. "The duchy will be worth inspecting!"
"Girl." It arrived from behind the desk, Chizuru’s brush already moving again. "The eastern accounts. When your celebrating concludes."
"Watch your mouth, bitch! I’m done being your servant!"
Every brush in the hall stopped at once. Somewhere in the traffic, Captain Rin walked into a trestle table.
Chizuru’s head came around with the speed of a siege engine being re-aimed. "I must have misheard."
"You heard me well, you senile sack of hypocrisy!"
Ayame raised an eyebrow. She was almost as dumbfounded as Chizuru herself. Almost. The difference was the corner of her mouth, which had already decided how this story would be retold.
Kaede marched on the desk she had spent her life bowing toward, and no trace of the misery survived the first step. "You murdered my father. You wanted to do the same to my sister! I wear this gray for my share of what happened."
Her voice wobbled at the edges and kept going anyway. "Yours starts today. Hear my first ruling as your overseer: your workload is tripled. Your tea privileges are revoked. Every Denied that leaves this hall crosses my table first. And I will question every. Single. One."
Then, in front of the entire hall, the overseer of Silverwind climbed onto the governing desk of the duchy. A sorted tier avalanched. Over by the sorting tables, a clerk made a small wounded sound.
Kaede planted her feet on a week of verdicts and leaned down into the sour old face that had authored her entire ruin. Oversee, the posting had said. She had decided to begin with the literal reading.
Chizuru held her seat through the avalanche, spine straight, eyes promising a reckoning her mouth was no longer allowed to order.
"Your remaining days belong to me now, bitch. Except when Black Fang sends for you." A small, terrible smile broke over her face, the first anyone in the keep had seen on her. "I hope she sends for you often."
The hall held its breath. Chizuru regarded the girl in servant’s gray for a long, glacial moment.
<Obey her,> Ayame ordered.
"...The eastern accounts," the elder said at last, "await the overseer’s review."
"They’ll wait until I decide they’re reviewed." Kaede snatched the stack off the desk. "Which is now. Because I decided it."
"..." It visibly took Chizuru all she had not to sneer back.
"Well then, we’re off," Quinlan grinned.
Kaede merely waved without even turning around, busy asserting dominance.
Rin bowed deep to the two of them. "U-um, thank you for your hard work!"
And just like that, the villain and his beloved samurai left the hall.
