Chapter 338: Chapter 264: Feng Ling’s Personality (2)
But by chance, from the weaker party, she heard a name that made her heart skip a beat—Ling Xiao!
That’s right. It was a Demon Swordsman over there, a middle-aged man with masterful sword skills, who shouted at a young man, "Tang Ming, get out of here! Go... go to Penzes City in Lanyue and find Brother Ling Xiao! He’ll definitely avenge us!"
"No, Big Brother! I’m too ashamed to go to him! If it weren’t for me, he never would have left the team!" the handsome young man yelled back.
Fengling noticed that although the young man only seemed to be at the level of a Middle-tier Great Sword Master, his sword skills were quite impressive. With every thrust, his opponent seemed to struggle just to keep up. It was clear that his adversary was considerably stronger than him.
Fengling was starting to get interested. She never would have thought this seemingly ordinary group of Adventurers would know Ling Xiao. So, just as the party was in its moment of greatest peril, Fengling unleashed her Rhythm Sword Skill. Like a Celestial Immortal descending from the heavens, specks of cold light flickered to the sound of a sudden, melodious tune. Not a single one of the opposing Adventurers was spared; all fell to Fengling’s blade.
She even took down the Demon Swordsman who was her equal in rank. This sudden turn of events stunned the people she had just saved. But once they recovered, they immediately began to thank her. If not for her timely intervention, they would have all been killed.
After all, the enemy Adventurers had been numerous and powerful. And while Fengling looked quite plain, true Adventurers rarely had the inclination to show pity on a pretty face. To an Adventurer, being too beautiful was actually a liability.
Look at the man Fengling had just saved. After a cursory thank you, he shot a dirty look at the weakest girl in their group. His words were just as ugly. He complained about being saddled with a burden, saying the Ling Xiao from before was also a burden. ’Who knows if that noble Lord in the south is even the same person as that useless brat?’ he sneered. ’Besides, even if you find him, what makes you think he’ll help you?’
Fengling was not happy to hear that. ’Do you have any idea why I even bothered to help you people?’ she thought. ’The ignorant truly are fearless. How dare he call Ling Xiao a burden?’ Fengling almost felt sorry for the man. Even a rookie Adventurer like herself understood that for an Adventurer, keen judgment was essential!
You can lack strength, but you must have good judgment!
Fortunately, Fengling was no longer the reckless greenhorn she once was. Having survived a life-and-death trial, while her temper was still quite short, she had learned to be far more patient than before.
Fengling later learned the man’s name was Wu Liang, a mere Tier Three Great Sword Master.
She then got to know the members of the adventurer’s party one by one: the middle-aged leader, Wang Chao; the handsome young man, Tang Ming; the simple, honest-looking giant, Gaia; and the gentle, frail-looking girl, Anya, who turned out to be a Pharmacist.
Fengling told them she was also an Adventurer out gaining experience and wanted to see the world. She asked to join them, promising not to take a share of any of their loot.
An offer that good was something no one would refuse, not even the narrow-minded Wu Liang. After all, every Adventurer knew exactly what having another powerful ally meant.
It meant a guarantee of survival!
And so, Fengling fell in with their adventuring party. Aside from her intense dislike for the constantly caustic Wu Liang, she got along with them quite well.
After learning that the group had no set destination, Fengling suggested they head to the small peninsular nation in the south. Her reasoning was sound: on that island nation was a forest spanning roughly a hundred li called the Mist Forest. It was known for a plant called the Ghost Vine. This plant had a wide range of uses; the fruit it bore was delicious, could cure many diseases, and always fetched a high price at auction houses in every kingdom.
Moreover, unlike other valuable medicinal herbs which were usually guarded by powerful Magical Beasts, the Ghost Vine lived up to its name: the plant could move. This made it incredibly difficult to find, but if you found one, you were sure to find more nearby.
That was why, every year, countless people flocked to the small peninsular nation of the Mist Kingdom, south of the Zichuan Empire. The country itself was named after the Mist Forest.
Everyone agreed; it was worth a shot to try their luck. In the days that followed, Fengling gradually pieced together information from their conversations about the Ling Xiao they knew. It sounded like he was indeed the same person she knew, but their descriptions of his appearance didn’t quite match.
Fengling touched her own cheek, and understanding dawned on her. ’When Ling Xiao met them, he clearly wasn’t using his real face.’ Furthermore, as she listened to Anya, the party’s only pretty girl, speak of Ling Xiao with such high praise, Fengling, for some reason, felt a faint sense of happiness for him.
She couldn’t help but curse herself internally. ’Who are you to him? What do his affairs have to do with you? You already left, didn’t you?’ But then she couldn’t stop herself from wondering, ’When he reads the letter I left, what will he think of me? Will he think I’m shameless?’
Fengling lowered her head, her thoughts racing. News traveled slowly in a place like this, so she had no idea what Ling Xiao had been up to in the few months since she had been gone.
