Chapter 409: Chapter 294: Reincarnation Inheritance
From the darkness behind them, a tide of powerful Magical Beasts surged out. Roaring and bellowing, they rushed toward the group of Sword Emperors who had slain countless of their kind. To make matters worse, these High-Tier Magical Beasts seemed to have gone mad, unleashing all sorts of elemental attacks right from the start!
Ice arrows, ice blades, Fireballs, Fire Snakes, Earth Spikes, giant boulders... The attacks blotted out the sky. These were no ordinary elemental attacks—not like the common fireballs or boulders that posed no threat to High-tier Martial Artists. Every attack launched by these Magical Beasts was infused with immense elemental power; even a Sword Emperor Powerhouse wouldn’t dare to take one head-on!
Ling Xiao’s eyes flashed like lightning, his vision completely unaffected by the pitch-black surroundings. He led Song Mingyue and Shangguan Yutong, dashing away at extreme speed. The Gu Family disciple, however, had only followed them for a few steps before Qin Zhaoran grabbed him by the collar and dragged him back.
He couldn’t care less if those three weaklings ran off and died. The Gu Family disciple, however, was their best hope of getting out of here. Besides, everyone had seen the disciple enter with them. If he died in here, the Qin Family would be unable to defend themselves. The Qin Family might one day rule the world and unify the hidden martial families and sects, but that was the future, not the present!
Therefore, they had to protect the Gu Family disciple’s life!
In that brief moment, they had already lost track of Ling Xiao’s group. Qin Zhaoran glanced back resentfully at the tide of High-Tier Magical Beasts, his mind racing. ’That giant net... The Qin Family *must* obtain it!’
’And if my Qin Family can’t get it... then I’ll personally blow this place to kingdom come! If the Qin Family can’t have it, then no other family... will either!’
With that thought, Qin Zhaoran shouted for his family members to gather around him. The members of the other great families did the same. He glanced at the three disciples from the Jingwu Family. In the darkness, he could vaguely see that the elegance and arrogance had vanished from their faces, replaced by deep-seated fear. He sneered inwardly. ’So now you’re scared? A few ignorant brats who don’t know their place! Your Jingwu Family... will sooner or later be nothing but a stepping stone for my Qin Family!’
The vast majority of people here were powerhouses at the Sword Emperor level. Although they were fleeing, they weren’t in a panic. Occasionally, a few would turn back together and launch a joint attack on the faster-pursuing Magical Beasts. A combined strike from several Sword Emperors was incredibly powerful, and the targeted beast would be killed on the spot.
And so, a large group of elite powerhouses from various great families and sects was sent scattering in a pathetic retreat by a horde of High-Tier Magical Beasts. If word of this got out, jaws would drop all over the world!
...
"Where are we going?"
Song Mingyue asked curiously. She could hear the distance between them and the main group growing ever wider. With Shangguan Yutong tucked under one arm and pulling Song Mingyue along with the other, Ling Xiao had been running at full speed for about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. Even the tsunami of beastly roars had faded into a faint murmur. Clearly, the three of them had taken a completely different path from the others.
"They don’t know the right way out either. What good would it do to follow them?"
Shangguan Yutong, tucked under Ling Xiao’s arm, was utterly mortified. Thankfully, it was pitch-black and no one could see anything; otherwise, she would have wanted to crawl into a hole and die from embarrassment.
Song Mingyue thought about it and realized he was right. But based on her impression of Ling Xiao, he wasn’t the type to panic in a crisis. His route seemed to confirm this; he wasn’t running aimlessly but seemed to be searching for something.
"We... need to find something," Ling Xiao said. Even after running full-tilt with Shangguan Yutong and Song Mingyue for so long, his True Essence circulated rapidly within him, and he felt no fatigue at all. His speed decreased as he spoke, his eyes fixing on a massive pillar just ahead before he came to a stop.
"How strange. Why didn’t any of those Magical Beasts chase after us?" Song Mingyue murmured, as if to herself. It was true; their group wasn’t any faster than the Sword Emperor Powerhouses, nor had they left much earlier, yet not a single Magical Beast had pursued them in this direction.
"Yeah, something feels off!"
After Ling Xiao set her down, Shangguan Yutong composed herself and said in a soft voice, glad for the change of subject to hide her lingering shyness.
"There’s nothing off about it," Ling Xiao said with certainty. "It’s because there’s something over here that the Magical Beasts are afraid of. They don’t dare come any closer!" He then began to circle the pillar in front of them—so thick it would take two people to wrap their arms around it—feeling for something on its surface.
"Ah! Then by coming here, aren’t we walking right into a trap?" Shangguan Yutong exclaimed in surprise.
Song Mingyue’s eyesight was good enough that she could just barely make out the pillar. It seemed slightly different from the others; shadowy figures were carved on it, but it was too dark for her to see clearly. Hearing Shangguan Yutong’s words, Song Mingyue retorted, "The more dangerous the place, the more likely you are to find something good!"
Shangguan Yutong paused for a moment, then remarked, "You sound just like that girl, Ling Su."
Finally, Ling Xiao’s hand stopped in one spot. Pressing down on it, he said with a smile, "Aren’t you curious where all those Magical Beasts came from? And... why they won’t come this way?"
"Yeah, why is that?" Song Mingyue walked over, her eyes shining ever brighter in the darkness.
