Chapter 1356: Chapter 405: Speculation
Chapter 405 [Speculation]
Uncle Wu was obviously a man with a past—but Chen Yan didn’t really care that much.
In terms of stories, his own experiences were definitely way more colorful than Uncle Wu’s. And he’d already noticed this guy’s aura was withdrawn, temperament steady; that trace of Evil Qi was completely hidden away.
When he talked and acted, he looked exactly like a small-time restaurant owner. If Chen Yan couldn’t read people’s fate and luck, he might really have been fooled by him.
But Chen Yan wasn’t planning to pry into his business anyway—the guy was clearly hiding out here.
Otherwise he wouldn’t be bringing along an underage daughter.
Hitman? Retired spook? A man who’s walked away from the jianghu?
Whatever.
After eating and drinking his fill, Chen Yan said goodbye to Uncle Wu and got ready to leave.
Mandy, that human GPS, was probably going to stay passed out till this afternoon—that was just Chen Yan’s initial estimate. If that idiot woke up and went and dosed himself again, then it’d probably be another day or two.
For that kind of scumbag, Chen Yan couldn’t be bothered. Whether he lived or died, Chen Yan wouldn’t spare him a thought—just a tool person.
From his own point of view, he had a very simple standard.
If you touch D, whoever you are, you’re trash.
Well, in the United States, if you go by Chen Yan’s standard, in this drug‑soaked country, the trash population would be pretty huge.
During the day, Chen Yan planned to head out on his own, wander around, do some hunting.
The human GPS was temporarily out of commission, but he could just hit the streets and try his luck.
Harvest a few people heaven had marked for death, preferably the ones who fully deserved it.
Chen Yan refused to stain himself with innocent blood, and it wasn’t just some simple moral scruple.
It was that he didn’t want to mess up his own Mental Realm.
Even a speck of dust, a tiny flaw left in his heart—once his Realm rose higher and he started cultivating his Primordial Spirit, it could turn into a Heart Demon and bite back.
The foundation of the Mental Realm was better built clean.
Chen Yan and Uncle Wu shared a quick smile; the vibe between them was a bit of mutual tacit understanding. Uncle Wu didn’t want to meddle and didn’t dig into Chen Yan’s background—fake papers were fake papers, but this Old Deng had obviously been through storms, seen the world, and didn’t really care about that kind of thing.
Chen Yan walked out of the restaurant to the street. After a few steps, he opened the door of the car parked by the curb.
Just as he pulled the door open, hurried footsteps sounded behind him. Chen Yan sighed and slowly turned around.
First thing that hit him was a waft of perfume, that mix of makeup and scent.
Chen Yan frowned slightly, looking at the girl who’d jogged up to him.
Uncle Wu’s daughter.
The girl ran up to Chen Yan, pressed her lips together. "That party, you really not going? Wouldn’t it be good to meet some friends? I know some girls, I could introduce you."
"I’ve gotta go to work." Chen Yan shook his head, putting on a helpless look.
"Two... uh, ten dollars." The girl looked straight into his eyes. "I’ll give you ten dollars?"
"I make twenty an hour working."
"...Then twenty." The girl bit down, glaring at him unhappily. "I’ll give you twenty dollars, you come with me to that party."
"..." Chen Yan looked at her, a bit puzzled, and frowned. "Why?"
"Just think of it as me asking you for a favor, and I’m paying you for it."
Chen Yan chuckled. "Let’s be clear: if it’s one of those lame situations where some guy you don’t like is hitting on you, and you drag me over to play fake boyfriend, I don’t want any part of that soap opera."
"As if!" The girl rolled her eyes again. "I just... bragged a bit to my friends, told them I’d found a boyfriend with a car who’d drive me to the party.
And you... have a car."
Now Chen Yan was genuinely a little surprised.
Because of his car?
He glanced at the old Citroën sedan beside him...
"At least your car’s washed and really clean." The girl sighed helplessly. "My dad’s car, the inside reeks of fish!"
"That’s it?"
"Fine, and you look pretty good, you’ll give me some face in front of my friends."
"..."
"Let’s set it: twenty dollars, you come to the party with me, and afterwards you have to drive me and my friends home. I want to save a bit of face."
Chen Yan laughed.
"For a party, one hour definitely isn’t enough, right? And I’ve gotta drive you there and back, plus your friends. What about gas money?"
"..." The girl bit her lip. "Twenty... twenty‑eight dollars! That’s all I’ve got! My dad doesn’t give me much allowance."
She finished and pulled a wad of crumpled bills from the pocket of her jeans, ones and bigger notes mixed together.
She counted them—exactly twenty‑eight dollars, not a cent more.
Looking at the girl in front of him, heavy makeup on but still clearly showing a childish face underneath...
Chen Yan nodded. "Okay, I’ll go with you."
The girl finally smiled, satisfied. "Four in the afternoon, pick me up at the corner, don’t come to my house! Corner of the street, four o’clock!"
With that, she ran off without looking back.
Watching her run away, Chen Yan shook his head and smiled.
A party at a little after four in the afternoon—American youth really do live lazy, wasted lives.

Chen Yan started the car and began cruising the streets.
He drove neither fast nor slow, deliberately heading for some run‑down, out‑of‑the‑way streets. Once he’d left the Chinese district, he crossed two blocks and entered a different Black neighborhood.
Then he wandered around the whole day and didn’t find anything good.
Plenty of people whose fate said they should die—especially in the Black neighborhood, where drug abuse was even worse.
