Chapter 416: Bring himChapter 416:
Marina
It has been over a year since the Devil decided to leave The Bunny in my hands. She just got up one day, rolled a boat away into the vast ocean, and was never seen again.
But her lack of presence should not be deceiving. Whenever something happens—whenever someone with a deal inquires—the parrot shows up from nowhere. I do not know how that is possible, but as Naia often says, it is best not to question much.
This time, the parrot showed up with a map.
We sailed in the direction it indicated. After one week of sailing, we can see an island in the distance.
The Bunny docks. I step off the ship, followed by Nancy, Naia, and the other core crew members.
The island is beautiful—the waters are extremely clear, the sand is a beautiful white. We walk toward what looks like a house.
The purple bird flies ahead.
The door opens.
Walking out is... the Devil?
She does not look imposing at all. Strapped to her chest is a child—a small thing with dark hair and bright eyes, clutching a fistful of her shirt. The child looks so much like her, it is as if she shrunk herself.
"Oh, what do we have here?" she says.
She walks toward us.
"Captain, is that your child?!" Naia rushes forward, arms outstretched, eyes gleaming.
The Devil’s hand shoots out. Her palm presses flat against Naia’s forehead, stopping her mid-step.
"You can look," the Devil says. "But you cannot touch."
Naia pouts but backs away.
"Welcome to my humble abode." The Devil gestures at the cabin behind her. "I could invite you in, but I do not want to."
No one moves.
"Take a seat," she says. "Relax."
Chairs appear from thin air—wooden, simple, arranged in a neat circle on the sand. They were not there a moment ago. Now they are.
Nancy jumps.
She presses herself against my side. Her hand finds mine. I hold it.
"It is fine," I murmur, though even I am very shaken.
"Ah, the sun is too much, is it not?" The Devil waves her hand.
A shade materializes above us—wide and dark, casting the entire circle in cool shadow. No poles. No fabric. Just shadow.
Nancy squeezes my hand tighter.
The Devil settles into one of the chairs. The child in her arms fusses—squirming, whining, her small face scrunching up. The Devil places a kiss on the top of her head.
The child calms immediately, one tiny fist clutching the collar of her shirt.
"Good girl," the Devil murmurs.
She looks up at us.
"Why are you all standing there like frightened fish? Sit."

Daphne
Why are they looking so scared?
[It might have something to do with the fact that you materialized objects from thin air.]
Oh.
I glance at the chairs. At the shade. At the perfectly normal, perfectly impossible things I just created.
Right.
That might be unsettling.
I forgot. I have grown accustomed to doing this here, where it is just us. Lorelei does not question it. Alira does not care. The island asks nothing of me.
But they are not from here.
Oh well.
I look at them. Nancy has gotten tanner, her skin glowing from sun and sea. She is wearing pants now—a far cry from the skirts and dresses she used to favor.
Thanks to the System, I know their relationship is going well. Once, I tried to spy on them and was met with an... interesting scene.
I may or maynot have watched.
It was a surprise, really. I did not think Nancy would be the dominant one in bed.
Some crew members have retired to start families. Others still love the sea. Good for them. I have also essentially retired. But a conversation with Lorelei a while ago set all of this in motion.
We were watching TV. Some alien show. Interdimensional cable—because what else would you expect from a television bought from the System store?
The channels bleed into each other, flipping between realities without warning. One moment, we are watching a cooking show hosted by a floating octopus. The next, a documentary about planets made entirely of glass.
I have never been interested in TV in my life. But there are some interesting shows. Lorelei’s favorite is about these red-skinned, one-eyed creatures with wings, and their complicated, dramatic lives.
The episodes are full of betrayal and reconciliation and the kind of family politics that make human court intrigue look like children playing pretend.
She was curled against my side, Alira sleeping between us.
She said she was sad.
Sad that Alira will never know a community like that. A people of her own. A clan.
Because Lorelei was banished.
Because her daughter carries the stain of her mother’s choices.
And she looked guilty.
I am not having it.
"I need you guys to bring me the prince," I say.
The crew stares.
"What do you mean?" Marina asks.
"What I said." I shift Alira to my other hip. The baby squirms but does not wake. "Bring me the prince."
"The prince?"
"Unless he has renamed himself king by now. Bring me the king."
"Why?"
I exhale.
"I have been sending him letters. He has been ignoring them." My jaw tightens. "I could go myself, but with how irritated I am, I might accidentally kill him. And I need him alive."
"You need him alive?"
"It is time for him to pay up on the deal."
Marina’s eyes widen.
Nancy shifts closer to Marina. "What exactly do you want him to do?"
"Miss Navigator." I tilt my head, a smile playing on my lips. "It is rude to show blatant affection for your ex-lover in front of your new lover, do you not think?"
Nancy flushes.
"It is nothing you should pay mind to," I say. "Just bring him to me."
"We will bring him."
"Good."
I shift Alira to my other hip.
"Well?" I raise an eyebrow. "Why are you still here? Go."
