Chapter 438: Lyra

The water is cold and clear, rushing over smooth stones as it winds through the forest. Lyra splashes through the shallows, her bare feet finding familiar footholds.

"Bet you cannot catch me!" Lyra shouts, laughing.

She darts ahead, her dark hair flying behind her. The water sprays around her ankles. The sun filters through the leaves, dappling the surface with gold.

This is her favorite place. The stream that runs along the edge of Redmoon territory. It is close enough to home that she feels safe, but far enough that it feels like an adventure.

She stops at a bend in the stream. The water pools here, deeper and slower. The mesh wall that separates Redmoon from the other packs runs along the bank, but underneath, there is a gap—wide enough for a child to squeeze through.

Lyra knows this because she has squeezed through it before. Many times.

Today, however, she is not the one crossing.

On the other side of the wall, a group of wolves is playing.

Lyra freezes.

She recognizes them immediately. The blonde boy in the center—Ethan. The other children who used to bully her. The ones who called her names, who laughed at her, who made her feel small.

Her friends catch up to her, panting.

"What is it?" one asks.

Lyra points.

The other side of the wall is technically still Redmoon property—the stream runs through it. But the wolves on the other side are not Redmoon. They are from the other packs. And they are playing in the water like they belong here.

Lyra’s jaw tightens.

She steps closer to the wall.

"Hey!" she calls out. "You cannot be here!"

Ethan looks up. His blonde hair is wet, plastered to his forehead. His blue eyes narrow when he sees her.

"Who says?" he asks.

"I do," Lyra says. "This is Redmoon property. You are not allowed here."

"Yeah, your kind should stay on your side." A voice from Lyra’s friend, Tony, says. He has shifted to human form, standing at her side. The other two shift too—a little boy and a little girl.

"Yeah, stay on your end," the little wolf, Natalie, says.

Ethan laughs.

"My mother is Luna of all four packs," he says. "There is nowhere I cannot go."

Lyra’s fists clench.

"My mother owns this land," she says. "She has more authority. Meaning I have authority. So get back to your side."

Ethan’s face reddens.

"Your mother is a rogue," he says. "She is not even a wolf. She does not count."

"Does not change that you are on my mother’s land," Lyra says.

Ethan steps forward. He is bigger than her now—he has grown bigger this past year. Taller. Broader. But Lyra does not back down.

She is not afraid. She has beaten him before. She can do it again. After all, her mother says she can do anything she wants to do. She will take care of it.

The wolves on Ethan’s side surround him. The wolves on Lyra’s side surround her.

"You are just a bastard!" One of the wolves on Ethan’s side says.

"Shut your mouth, you barbaric wolf!" Tony says.

"I am not wrong," the wolf continues. "She is a bastard and a freak—born from two females and is not a wolf!"

Lyra lunges at the boy.

Ethan joins in.

It turns into a full-blown scuffle.

Lyra obviously wins.

She stands over Ethan, breathing hard, her fists still clenched. Ethan is on the ground, clutching his nose. Blood drips between his fingers.

"You are going to regret this," Ethan says.

"I do not think so," Lyra says, not caring.

She turns and walks away.

Her friends follow.

Behind her, Ethan’s wolves help him up.

"My mother will hear about this!" Ethan shouts.

Lyra does not look back.

"Let her," she says. "My mother will hear about it too."

"You will pay!" One of Ethan’s lackeys shouts.

Lyra turns around, hands on her hips.

"My mother always says one thing," she says. "The one thing we have in common with wolves is that strength always wins."

"Yes," Natalie chimes in. "We learned in history that wolves always followed the strongest Alpha wolf to keep the pack safe and protect us."

"Yeah." Lyra lifts her chin. "And I beat you fair and square. Even if all four of your daddies went against my mother, they would not beat her either."

Ethan glares. His face turns red.Lyra gives him a mocking smile and clicks her tongue.

"The future of the packs is really gloomy," she says, her voice dripping with disappointment, "if this is the future Alpha."

Ethan’s hands clench into fists at his sides. His jaw is tight. His face is almost purple. The other wolves on his side shift uncomfortably, looking between him and Lyra.

"You are nothing," Ethan spits. "You are just a rogue’s pup. You do not belong here. You do not belong anywhere."

Lyra tilts her head.

"Wrong," she says. "You do not belong here. Because I wonder where you would go if I told my mum that I do not want you guys on her land anymore?"

Ethan’s face pales.

The other wolves shift nervously.

Lyra smiles.

"Do not be so scared," she says. "Just stay away from Redmoon territory!"

She turns around.

Tony sticks his tongue out at Ethan and his lackeys, then follows behind.Lyra’s friends walk beside her, their heads high, their steps confident. The stream gurgles behind them. The wall looms on their left.

"He was so mad," Natalie says, grinning.

"His face was so red!" another friend adds.

Lyra laughs happily.

Compared to a year ago—before her mom came—everything is different. Back then, she could not shift. She had to play alone. She had to endure Ethan’s bullying without anyone to defend her.

She is happy.

She never thought she would be happy.

"Let us go home," she says again.

Mother always looks sad when I tell her about my life before she was here. She gets this look in her eyes—like she is somewhere far away, somewhere dark. Then she lets me do anything. I wonder what she will let me get away with this time, Lyra thought to herself on her way back home.
