He knew he had won the argument. He knew she had realized her flaw.
"You..." Ji’an narrowed her eyes, completely abandoning all pretense of polite distance. "Who the hell are you? How do you know about thermal arrays? The idiots here think a fire array is only good for blowing things up."
The man leaned back on his wooden stool, crossing one long leg over the other. He took a slow drag from his pipe, savoring the flavor.
"Those idiots are exactly that. Idiots," the man drawled lazily. "They understand destruction. They do not understand creation. They do not understand that the true mastery of the Dao lies not in how fiercely a flame burns, but in how flawlessly you can control its consumption."
He smiled, looking at her with a heavy, intense, deeply evaluating gaze.
"I watched your performance in the Plaza of the Heavens yesterday, little Chef," the man murmured. "Your refactoring of the Nine-Palace Constriction Array was... highly entertaining. Disrespectful. Chaotic. And structurally brilliant. You treat the fabric of the universe like a pantry."
Ji’an stiffened.
The initial rush of the academic argument faded, and Ji’an’s transmigrator alarm bells began screaming at maximum volume once again.
She looked at the man’s smile.
It wasn’t the pure, puppy like adoration of Gu Zhiwei. It wasn’t the conflicted, tsundere obsession of Lu Jianheng. It wasn’t the terrifying, possessive devotion of Xie Wangchen.
It was a completely different, infinitely more dangerous breed of smile.
It was the smile of a predator assessing a highly profitable, incredibly useful asset.
It was a sly, manipulative, incredibly charming, predatory Fox Smile.
And instantly, with the force of a major traumatic flashback, Ji’an’s mind transported her back to Earth.
She remembered her first job out of culinary school. She had been hired as a line cook at a high-end, highly prestigious Michelin-star restaurant.
The Executive Chef and Owner of that restaurant had been a charismatic, brilliant, incredibly handsome man who wore tailored suits and spoke with a smooth, hypnotic drawl.
He had smiled at her exactly like this.
He had looked at her unique, brilliant recipes, praised her ingenuity, and told her that she was a "visionary."
And then, he had ruthlessly exploited her for the next three years.
"We’re a family here, Ji’an," the Executive Chef had smiled, handing her a schedule that required her to work eighty hours a week without overtime pay.
"I need you to stay late and re-inventory the walk-in freezer. It’s a great learning opportunity for your career," he had murmured, leaving her to freeze at 2:00 AM while he went home to sleep.
"The budget is tight this quarter, but the exposure you’re getting by running my line is worth more than a bonus," he had promised, right before taking all the credit for the tasting menu she had designed.
Ji’an stared at the mysterious, overpowered, pipe-smoking deity sitting across from her.
She saw the messy hair, the lazy posture, and heard the smooth, complimentary drawl.
’Oh my god,’ Ji’an’s soul shrieked in absolute corporate terror. ’He’s an Overtime Boss. He is a Xianxia CEO. He is the kind of guy who promises you equity in a startup, makes you do all the coding, and then pays you in pizza parties and ’valuable cultivation experience!’’
Her transmigrator instincts weren’t warning her about physical danger. They were warning her about an unmitigated labor rights violation.
"I am not interested," Ji’an blurted out, her voice hard, devoid of the previous banter. She slammed her compendium shut and grabbed her notes.
The man blinked, mildly surprised by the sudden, aggressive shift in her demeanor. "Not interested in what? I haven’t proposed anything yet."
"I am not interested in whatever highly complex, unpaid, ’great for my resume’ project you are currently plotting in your head," Ji’an snapped, standing up from the table, shoving her stylus into her spatial ring.
She pointed her finger directly at his face.
"I see right through you, Mr. Man in Midnight Silk. You saw me fix that array yesterday. You saw that I possess a unique, highly efficient methodology. And now you’re sitting here, offering me minor critiques on my thermal distribution, trying to bait me into an academic debate."
Ji’an leaned forward, her silver-flecked eyes blazing with the righteous fury of a unionized worker.
"You want me to prove my theories to you and get invested. And then, once I’m hooked, you’re going to hit me with the ’I have a broken, dangerous array that needs fixing, and you are the only one who can do it’ pitch. You’re going to try and recruit me for free labor under the guise of an ’educational crucible.’"
She grabbed her tea cup and took a defiant sip.
"Well, read my lips. I am on a diplomatic tour. I am a chaperone. My schedule is full. I do not do freelance array-refactoring without a signed contract, an upfront retainer of high-grade spirit stones, and guaranteed weekends off. Good day, sir."
Ji’an turned on her heel, fully intending to march out of the pavilion and lock herself in her room.
For three seconds, the man in the purple robes sat perfectly still on the wooden stool.
He stared at the spot where she had been sitting, processed the rant, and the unyielding, specific nature of her rejection.
And then, the deity threw his head back and burst into a fit of loud, booming, hysterical laughter.
It was a laugh that shook the very foundations of the jade pavilion. Elder Viper, who was sitting across the room, suddenly flinched, looking around wildly, able to hear the booming laughter but unable to see the source due to the man’s cloaking aura.
"By the Heavens," the man wheezed, wiping a tear of mirth from his eye, leaning heavily on the table. "You are spectacular. You are absolutely spectacular."
He didn’t let her leave.
With a lazy flick of his wrist, the space in front of Ji’an warped. The air solidified into an impenetrable, transparent barrier of kinetic energy.
Ji’an bounced off the invisible wall, stumbling backward with a frustrated groan. "Hey! Unlawful imprisonment is a violation of sectarian HR protocols!"
The man stood up, slowly walking over to her. He was incredibly tall, towering over her, his presence no longer cloaked.
The unfathomable weight of his aura, an aura of pure crackling thermal energy washed over her, making the hairs on her arms stand up.
He stopped a few feet away, looking down at her, his dark eyes dancing with absolute delight.
"You are incredibly perceptive, little Chef," the man purred, removing the pipe from his lips. "You saw the hook, and you actively refused the bait. I have not met a junior with such fierce, untamable boundaries in a very long time."
He leaned down slightly, bringing his face closer to hers, his foxy smile fully weaponized.
"My name," the man murmured, "is Yan Zhaoge."
Ji’an’s brain halted.
Yan Zhaoge.
The name sounded incredibly familiar.
She dug through the dusty, frantic archives of her memory, recalling the conversation she had with Master Jiu Zui in his lounge just a few days ago.
"Among the sects you are mandated to visit... there is the Iron-Stove Monastery in the western dunes... The Sovereign of the Monastery is an old... acquaintance of mine. An entirely insufferable, stubborn, brilliant old bastard..."
The realization hit her like a cast-iron skillet to the face.
This wasn’t just a random overpowered NPC.
This was the Sovereign of the Iron-Stove Monastery, the master of thermal manipulation, and Master Jiu Zui’s best friend.
’Master set me up,’ Ji’an realized, absolute horror dawning on her. ’He knew exactly what he was doing. He sent me on this tour specifically so this maniac could find me.’
"You’re the Iron-Heart Sovereign," Ji’an whispered, her eyes wide.
"I am," Yan Zhaoge smiled, his eyes glinting with terrifying promise. "And your master, that drunken, unreliable oaf, sent me a rather frantic missive months ago. He boasted that he had found a disciple who understood heat better than I did. A disciple who cooks with kinetic mass."
He reached out, lightly tapping the end of his pipe against the center of her forehead.
"I came to the Azure Dragon Sect to observe you from the shadows, Ji’an. To see if you were truly a prodigy, or just a parlor trick."
His smile widened, turning incredibly predatory and overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
