Some mysteries require a slow simmer.

If she cornered him now, here by the acid pits, he would just double down on the airhead routine. He would panic, or worse, his abyssal defense mechanisms would trigger, and he might fold space and run away.

’He is hiding something massive,’ Ji’an concluded, a cold, clinical resolve settling over her turbulent emotions. ’He knows about the Tower. He has trauma tied to it. But his body language... the way his shoulders tensed, the way the light warped... he is terrified of talking about it. He is reluctant. He’s protecting a secret, and he’s using this golden-retriever persona as a blast-shield.’

She had the clue. She had seen the crack in the armor.

That was enough for today.

Ji’an forced the intense, interrogating glare off her face. She let her shoulders drop, summoning a lazy, arrogant, perfectly natural smirk to her lips.

She reached out and plucked the obsidian skipping stone from Zechuan’s palm.

"Just curious," Ji’an drawled, weighing the stone in her hand. "Elder Viper was telling ghost stories over tea. Figured I’d ask if you’d ever bumped into a cosmic nerd while you were wandering the abyss."

Zechuan visibly relaxed.

The microscopic tension in his frame dissolved, his bright, goofy smile returning to full wattage.

"There were no nerds in the abyss, Ji’an," Zechuan laughed, entirely relieved that she had dropped the subject. "Just a lot of angry bats and rocks that glowed in the dark."

"Well, speaking of rocks," Ji’an pivoted smoothly, turning toward the bubbling green acid pool. She dropped into a low, professional baseball pitcher’s stance. "You think four skips is a personal best? Watch and learn. I used to skip stones across the river back home until my arm went numb."

Ji’an didn’t use Qi. She whipped her arm forward, snapping her wrist at the exact angle of release.

The flat obsidian stone shot out of her hand like a bullet.

It hit the surface of the thick, viscous acid.

Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip.

Six flawless, rapid-fire skips before the stone finally lost momentum and sank into the corrosive depths with a satisfying hiss.

Zechuan gasped, his dark eyes wide with absolute, starry-eyed awe. He clapped his hands together enthusiastically.

"Six skips! Without a void-portal! You are a master of skipping stones, Ji’an! Teach me the wrist-snap! I must conquer the acid tension!"

"It’s all in the follow-through, Zechuan," Ji’an chuckled, crossing her arms and watching him frantically search the shoreline for another flat rock.

As Zechuan happily resumed his game, completely engrossed in trying to beat her high score, Ji’an stood on the edge of the Caustic Springs, her smile fading into a look of quiet, calculating determination.

The board was set.

Yan Zhaoge, the Overtime Boss, was waiting for her in the western dunes, holding the keys to the Stargazing Tower’s thermal arrays.

Shen Zechuan, the Abyssal Paradox, was walking beside her, holding the fragmented, traumatized memories of her brother’s sacrifice behind a wall of feigned innocence.

The plot was no longer just hunting her; it had surrounded her.

’Lay low,’ Ji’an told herself, watching the green acid bubble and pop. ’Play the part. Be the arrogant Vanguard Leader. Let them think I am just a chef who likes to hit things with a spatula. I will bide my time. I will ferment my wine. I will train my peacocks.’

She slipped her hands into the deep pockets of her Szechuan Red robes, her silver-flecked eyes hardening into diamonds.

’I have the clues. I have the leverage. I can corner him whenever I want. But right now... I need to make sure my team is strong enough to survive the fallout when the truth finally explodes.’

"Ji’an! I found a rock shaped like a triangle!" Zechuan called out, holding up a jagged piece of obsidian. "Do you think aerodynamics apply to geometric anomalies?!"

"Throw it and find out, you menace!" Ji’an yelled back, forcing a laugh.

The Vanguard Tour continued its march across the continent.

But beneath the surface of the diplomatic facade and the grueling training regimens, the Apex Anomaly was quietly, methodically preparing her kitchen for a war against the Heavens themselves.

***

The fundamental problem with being an overachieving, unregistered variable in a Xianxia universe was that the Heavens themselves possessed an incredibly strict, aggressive automated auditing system.

It had been roughly a week since Lin Ji’an had stood by the caustic acid springs and watched Shen Zechuan skip stones through dimensional wormholes.

In that week, the diplomatic tension between the Vanguard Retinue and the local Azure Dragon disciples had completely evaporated.

The initial hostility had been thoroughly beaten out of them by Ji’an’s tyrannical bootcamp, replacing their orthodox rivalry with the profound, unshakable bond of mutual trauma.

Gu Zhiwei and Senior Brother Kui were now practically best friends, regularly engaging in shirtless, screaming weightlifting competitions by the mud pits. Lu Jianheng was giving the local swordsmen seminars on kinetic transfer, and Wen Shiru had successfully cornered the local black market for anti-venom salves.

The boys were having the time of their lives.

They were leveling up, they were bonding, and they were entirely distracted.

Which was perfect, because Lin Ji’an was currently experiencing an internal infrastructure crisis.

For the last seven days, the dense, golden-red Harmonious Five-Grain Qi in her dantian had been behaving like a pot of thick porridge left on a high burner without a lid.

It was bubbling. It was expanding.

It was pushing against the structural limits of her physical vessel.

She was about to level up.

And she wasn’t just breaking a standard bottleneck.

To the rest of the Vanguard Retinue, the Nascent Soul realm was the pinnacle of their current existence.

But Lin Ji’an had transmigrated into a body that had inherited Master Jiu Zui’s monstrous, unrecorded cultivation lineage.

She was currently sitting at the absolute peak of the Void Refining Stage, a full two major realms above her "peers."

This was also the reason why they had to call her "Martial Uncle."
