Kael had not been assigned a room in the mansion, so he decided to return to the servants’ quarters for now and wait until one was assigned.
But he had spent a long time away from nobility and mansions, which had made him forget a crucial fact—servants did not have their own rooms. They either commuted to work or shared cramped living spaces with other servants.
The butler had taken Kael’s request to work undercover as a servant seriously and placed him with the other common servants in the same quarters.
The room was cramped. It was barely bigger than 15 square feet but housed three single bunk beds for the servants. And since he was the last one to join the room, he was given the worst bed.
The bed looked like it was falling apart, and the sheets clearly had not been cleaned in a long time. Kael refused to step anywhere near it until he cleaned it up.
But the servants occupying the room did not seem to mind how dirty it was. Their long day of hard labor had left them exhausted, and they looked ready to collapse at any second.
"Hey, welcome to your new home. How was your first day of work? It’s usually harder when you first start, but hang in there. It will get easier soon."
An older servant tried to console him, only for another to scoff.
"Don’t give him false hope. Kid, the work is only going to get tougher from here. You didn’t do much today because you were assigned to the young master. But it’ll get more difficult tomorrow."
The second servant cautioned him. The other three were already knocked out, too exhausted to even move.
Kael sighed and deliberately looked toward the bathroom.
"You want to use the bathroom? Then go quickly. There’s no telling when one of us will wake up and decide it’s our turn."
The first servant teased, and Kael nodded. He headed toward the bathroom, and once inside, he cast a spell on the room outside.
These servants were not very powerful, and Kael did not sense any traces of magic on them. So they were unlikely to notice if he cast magic.
But he had a reason for doing so—to make it easier for the servants to talk.
Kael spent ten minutes in the bathroom and splashed some water around to make it seem as though he had used it. But the bathroom was in just as poor a condition as the room outside.
He had no intention of using such a filthy bathroom either.
’These servants are too pitiful to be made to live in such miserable conditions. However, it is not my place to advocate for better treatment for them.’
Kael could help them once, but these servants needed to stand up for themselves if they wanted a better working environment.
But that was a thought for another time. For now, he decided to change his clothes using magic before coming out of the bathroom.
Yawn
"Hey, kid, did you take your clothes into the bathroom to change? How weird! I don’t remember seeing that... I must be much more exhausted than I thought."
The first servant looked ready to collapse and would not wake until the next morning because of Kael’s magic.
It was relatively harmless magic, which Kael did not mind exploiting.
Kael decided to sit down on the only clean surface in the room—the floor—and considered how to bring up the topic he wanted to discuss.
But his luck was exceptionally good today because the servant brought it up himself.
"Hey, about that young master of ours... you met him, right? Is he as scary as the rumors say? Did he attack you? Try to kill you? What happened?"
The servant asked, hoping to squeeze some juicy gossip out of Kael. Normally, talking about one’s masters like this would be a death sentence if they were caught, but servants loved to gossip anyway. And the nastier the information, the juicier the gossip became.
For now, Kael decided to defuse the situation and see what effect it would have.
"I did meet the young master, but rather than a madman, he seemed more like a misunderstood child. Do you think he could actually be telling the truth about seeing the future?"
Kael asked, and the two servants exchanged a look before bursting into laughter.
"I don’t think so. You see, I was there when the young master had his first vision. He touched that old man’s hand, then clutched his forehead in pain. We all rushed over to steady him, but he attacked us, saying we were all going to destroy this village in the future. See? I even have the scar to prove it."
The first servant raised his arm to show the deep scar. It had healed, but the mark left behind showed how severe the wound had been.
"The young master used to be sensible, but he changed that day. And that old man... he disappeared as well."
The second servant nodded as he added that final detail. It felt like an important piece of information for Kael to remember.
"Hmm, but what if the young master was right and had evidence to prove it? Did no one bother to check?"
Kael asked, and the servants exchanged another look before one of them placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Well, I’m sure the young master has his reasons, but even if he’s right and this world is going to be destroyed someday, I don’t want to know about it. I’d rather enjoy the peace I have now than worry about a distant future that may come to pass."
The first servant shrugged as he spoke, and the second one nodded in agreement.
Kael sighed and decided it was better not to push the topic any further. The servants were not becoming suspicious of how insistent he was because of his magic, but they were starting to fall asleep.
Once the two servants were completely knocked out, Kael quickly cast a spell over the entire mansion before leaving the servants’ quarters. It was time to start looking around the estate.
However, he had barely gone far before he ran into Lady Marsha’s butler.
